Moana is a 2016 American computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The 56th film produced by the studio.
The film introduces Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana and also features the voices of Dwayne Johnson. The film features original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina, and an orchestral score also composed by Mancina. It tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a Polynesian village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti.
It's my first time listening to Moana and my first time listening to How Far I'll Go (From "Moana").

You should watch "You're welcome" it's a good song in this movie.
There's a reprise of this song towards the end of the movie, and it never fails to give me goosebumps and make me tear up, no matter how many times I hear it. A wonderful movie.
Imo, both reprises of How Far I'll Go are fantastic, and both of them make me cry. One thing I really love about this movie is how (w/ the exceptions of You're Welcome and Shiny), the songs all build into each other, and I Am Moana (Song of the Ancestors) ends up feeling like 3 song reprises in one (as it takes elements from Where You Are, How Far I'll Go, and We Know the Way), and imo is all the more powerful for it.
But the Reprise is Not towards the End of The Movie (rather)... You speak of "I Am Moana", and I Totally Agree with You for the Emotions that This Song speak to You, and that Moana is a *_Really_* Wonderful Movie!!! 💜😍🫂🥺💚
This is literally the "I Want Song" of the movie, which is common in basically every musical in existence. The "I Want" song (also called an "I Wish" song) is a popular type of song featured in musical theatre, and has become a particularly popular term through its use to describe a series of songs featured in Disney Renaissance films that had the main character singing about how they are unsatisfied with their current life, and what they are searching for. It will come within the first 15 minuets of a musical movie or in the first act of a stage performance.
Examples include; The Wizard and I - Wicked, I Just Cant Wait to be King - Lion King, My Shot - Hamilton, Roxie - Chicago, Part of Your World - Little Mermaid, I Wish - Into the Woods (Best Example really), etc etc.

The line from this that always really hits me is "I'll be satisfied if I play along" and that kinda feeling you have where if you just fit in and follow who they want you to be then you'll be happy, but it just never happens.

What gets me about this song (and all of them that Moana sings in the movie) is that she was 14 when she recorded for this movie. That’s a phenomenal voice for such a young singer.
When I watched this movie for the first time as a kid (it's been six years already? Holy cow!) This song especially stuck with me. Even at the time, when I didn't understand any English at all, this Version was my favorite and I'd try to learn all the words without understanding a single one. And you're so right, the song definitely holds up today.

Yep, that song's fantastic, one of my favorite Disney villain songs. Nothing can top Be Prepared, though.
The similarity to other Disney songs you were recognizing is because this is Moana's (yes, her name is Moana) "I Want" song. From what I've seen, it's one of the songs commonly in Disney musicals. Other "I Want" songs, you referenced The Little Mermaid's, Part of Your World, there's also Hercules' Go the Distance and Frozen's Let It Go, to name a few. If you just google "disney i want songs" you can see a whole list, but it's basically the song where the protagonist talks about what they want to do and gives their motivation.
Also, I like this song, but you should also listen to Shiny and You're Welcome from this soundtrack. You're Welcome is sung by The Rock's character, so that's cool too.
You should check out VoicePlay's Moana medley. Just... trust me. Even not knowing much of the music from the movie, it's still absolutely worth it, they're fantastic. (Also, reacting to TH-cam acapella groups is a great way to bring in new viewers... just saying lol.)
There's a reason Disney main characters' songs have similar themes - they're also referred to as "I Want" songs. It's how Disney movies set up the motivation of their main character. Formulaic, sure, but the formula is a classic because it works!

I wan to tell you what makes us like Lin-Manuel Miranda's Music:
1.Most of the times songs are not samey. Even, if a verse is repeated, it comes back with more pulse or energy which is something rarely found in "Mainstream" music.
2.His songwriting skills are so good that you can't ignore it and way he incorporates rap like verse in a song which was otherwise slow paced(like Alexander Hamilton or My Shot).Also, his songs rhyme so much.
3. He can impressively storytell through a song without making very long cuts in between the songs. For example, compare the song Belle with Family Madrigal. Belle is a bit broken but, family madrigal despite being broken feels smooth.
I hope you are ready for" In the Heights " I love the Broadway show more but check out the opening to the movie I think you will love it too. It's Lin's first big Broadway musical and were his first Tony Awards come from.

To answer your question, for Film 3D animation you usually never do motion capture.
The animator usually films themselves doing the actions and then exxagerates them a lot more.
There is a really funny video of the shot progress of "do you want to build a snowman" with a fully grown man doing the 5 yr old(?) Anna actions.

For a Disney movie with a different sounding "I want" song, try "Almost There" from The Princess and the Frog.

The reprise to How Far I'll go is also amazing. But then again the whole soundtrack for Moana is pretty damn good. I actually still enjoy it more than Encanto's soundtrack.

Moana is amazing, and every song is perfect :) After you finish with Moana, I would suggest Frozen and Frozen 2 for the next shows. I like the songs from the second one better, but all of them are great :) Show Yourself is the big one from Frozen 2, if you don't want to do all of them.
Please check the frozen soundtrack 1 and 2 there are amazing, and I recommend Show Yourself from frozen 2 if you love this composer.

This music is awesome! But my favorite one from the movie is We Know The Way. I watched the movie on the theater and I got so many goosebumps on that part! I just love so much how they change from English to other language (I forgot which one oops) sometimes, it's beautiful and so powerful.
The rest of the music is phenomenal too. As is the movie. Just watch the whole thing, it is on par with Encanto.
