The first version of Path Tracing for Cyberpunk 2077 was added on April 11th 2023 as "technological preview" and since then the Path Tracing implementation was significantly improved:
○ Added ReSTIR GI (improves indirect lighting)
○ Added Shader Execution Reordering (improves PT performance, RTX 40 series only)
○ Added Opacity Micro-Maps (improves PT performance, RTX 40 series only)
○ Added DLSS Ray Reconstruction (improves denoising quality and performance)
○ Improved RTXDI quality
○ Improved the quality of existing DLSS Super Resolution implementation (essential feature to play with PT at comfortable FPS)
○ Improved the quality of existing DLSS Frame Generation implementation (essential feature to play with PT at comfortable FPS)
○ Numerous bug fixes
The list of changes isn't small, so I decided to make an updated showcase of the current Path Tracing implementation in Cyberpunk 2077 & Phantom Liberty :)

What's the mod you're using for this Dying Light look?
That's a lot of optimization that's only catered to 40 series GPU. But still, I'll hold onto my 3080 til these improvements gets to have a sort of stability which would be around RTX 50-60 series, but hopefully AMD (or more likely, Intel) catches up to make pricing better.
The haters can talk shit all they want. Path tracing just hits different. The game is on a different level with it.
my pc on a different level when i use it

This is one of the few games where PT actually makes the setting you're in feel much more grounded and realistic. Seeing Misty for the first time with PT on was one of the first uncanny valley moments I've had in gaming in awhile and all of it was interactive without any cutscenes. People underestimate how effective good lighting can be at pulling a game's art direction and visuals together.
Vainilla Cyberpunk 2077 already has the strongest art direction i ever seen from a massive and expensive AAA game.
4:48 - Day and night difference.
Path Tracing is amazing
there is a lot of cherry picking here, though. and middle man ray tracing was skipped.
@@ImperialDiecast RT is a bit broken, there's like ~5 mods you need to get installed in order for RT to work on hair, litter on the road, blimp rays and stuff
@@Validoleech will it come with additional fps drop?
Once you get used to path-tracing it is difficult to accept rasterization in this game.
Agreed.
Rasterization kills the art direction of Cyberpunk 2077.
Path tracing makes the game look like a remake on his own
Fun thing is that the game is currently ray and bounce limited and future results will be even more visually striking somewhere in 2030 with more capable hardware. I'm dreaming to play this at 4K60 DLAA+8 bounces & 8 rays
how many rays currently?
@@starbez If I'm not mistaken, then in cyberpunk there are 2 rays and 2 bounces by default
@@denisgolovchenko yeah, 2/2
More like 2040.
Not so much actually. Nvidia knows where to cast the rays. The realism will come from a much better material system designed from the ground up for path tracing. There will be no point to brute force more rays when a few is good enough.
Huge difference!

Wake up Samurai, MXBenchmarkPC posted a new video
😂
@@MxBenchmarkPC Quick question but I feel like I prefer playing path tracing with RR off as the image seems more stable from afar with less ghosting. What were your thoughts on RR?
@MrAlex26069114 I think that RR is very good at 4K, but at 1440p and 1080p it's not for everyone due to an "oil painting" look and ghosting in the distance.
performance hit is out of this world
This one has me stumped. I have a 4080s and I run these at higher settings using Frame gen and I get over 60 fps average. I wonder if his overlay doesn’t properly count FG

@@MxBenchmarkPC oh damn 😂
Yet there's something missing and it's developer's fault. The shadows cast inside building are way too dark, this probably due to misscalculations or too few light bouncing. That garage with vans is an example: you can see the roof light shining and its light spreading in the air, but the only affected by it is the van right below it; that's just not right, the light should cover the van, cast shadow in the floor and get weaker as it aproaches deeper places or the outside.
Exactly my friend, patch tracing cannot be applied like they did with 3d films just as a "filter" or throw it into the scene and wait for the magic to happen.
That scene you described is great, knowing that a light bulb doesn't work like that, so the scene ends up being unrealistic, as well as being terrible for gameplay because it's very dark.
For future reference you need to film comparisons in random areas and on NPCs + vehicles, places like V's apartment and the street Vik's clinic is on already have perfect lighting put there by the devs since they've been shown in the very first gameplay chunk even before the game released.
I freaking love this game so much, hope to eventually get an rtx 4000 series and give a try for path tracing.
You need at least 4080 if you want path tracing at playable framerate without DLSS and Frame Generation.
Path Tracing is insane when you see it in game
Path tracing removes a lot of the "video gamey" look to not just the surroundings but the NPCs as well. The weird eyelid/lip glow you see with rasterization even at max, is completely gone when path tracing is turned on. This delivers the most immersive realistic experience. Beautiful. Thanks for the comparison tests!
thumbs up.
I have been replaying this with my RTX 3090 at 1440p DLSS Q at 40 fps but man I can't wait to get RTX 5080 or 6080 and replay this at 2160p DLSS Q... Or even perhaps 2160p DLAA if hardware ray tracing engine becomes that powerful.
4K dlaa? When 6090 arrives
For open bright places with much lighting PT looks so damn good but for closed narrow darker places the default game light system looks less realistic yeah but better to observe the area clearer
@MxBenchmarkPC IMPRESSIVE ! what do you think about using RT without path tracing BUT enabling HDR, as long as I see that the difference is only in brightness then the HDR will do a very good job and especially on an OLED, wait a sec 😮😮 I switched on my 4k oled display now 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮

@@MxBenchmarkPC thanks 🙂
@FATBOY_. no problem.
Why does nobody do raytracing on vs path tracing on? I want to see if pathtracing is worth it over regular run of the mill raytracing .
I already did several Ray Tracing vs Path Tracing videos, you can find them in the "Ray Tracing On vs Off" playlist here on this channel.
Yes, psycho RT to PT is a bigger jump than RT OFF to psycho RT.
Great job. I assume no FG. Although I think an RT agains PT comparison would have been more fair.
I got same gpu but I get an almost 30 more fps with ur exact settings does ur counter count FG? I get like 70-80 fps on those settings
Frame Generation is disabled in this video.
@@MxBenchmarkPC oh lol I thought it was on . I do like FG it’s better than FSR 3 I had a 3080 used FSR 3 and upgraded to 4080S and it’s better
(Steven's tone) Those reflection is brighter than my future lah
The hardware needed to run this settings will take 5 or 6 years to become affordable.
yeahh probably starting with rtx6060
Pretty sure with optimized settings you could get 60FPS 1440p on a 4070 super.
Just recently i finally maxed out the OG Crysis from 2007 with Intel UHD, for Cyberpunk path traced it will take maybe more than 10 years lmao.
My 3080 isn't exactly ancient technology, but I had to squeeze every last drop of it, along with modding in some unstable fsr3, to play with PT
And it was worth it! The faces alone are a good enough reason, and the rest of the game gets a massive upgrade
I'm playing with PT, yes its more realistic.. but i never saw V in reflections😅
Damn this looks like CGI 4:15
I mean.....it is
last time i tried the lighting was amazing, but the characters faces were kinda blurry(with pt),is it still like that?
It really depends on a resolution. At 4K the characters faces are perfectly clean even with Ray Reconstruction.
At the end of your videos, the suggested videos show up on top. Consider leaving a few empty seconds at the end.
Average NPC on youtube: RayTracing looks bad! (prob has integrated graphics)
90 fps difference in one scene is just crazy
But that was obvious
Getting back to this video, path tracing is basically raytracyng psycho. You just have raytracing turned off in the comparison shots. I am switching bewteen raytracing psycho and path tracing and not noticing anything different appart from the performance hit
Then you need some glasses.
@@ACFUN34 No I don't, he clearly didn't enable raytracing in the comparison shots. Raytracing psycho is path tracing minus the heavy performance hit
@@AlexandruCarjan Ray tracing is not the same thing as Path tracing 😂 Path tracing simulates the true physics of light, which uses ray tracing as one component of a larger light simulation system.
Definitely the future if they stop selling us junk GPUs and finally release the good stuff.
I mean it looks nice but I prefer save like 60 fps extra. RTs and path are tech that are only viable in powerfully cards like rtx 4080 or 4090.
7:39 I don't know man for lore wise should Johnny had shadow reflect on a mirror?
since V sees him, yes, you gonk
Im convinced once GPUs can handle these workloads, Im gonna be replaying this game for the 4th time with only pathtracing
I'm so glad i found this channel, si
7:18 There is a huge difference for which you can buy 4080
Looks amazing. I would try it on my RTX 4070 but since I'm still on 1080p, DLSS quality is not even an option since it makes the game look worse on that resolution. When I'll switch to 1440p, I will certainly enable this with DLSS quality and frame generation. Without those options it won't be playable 😆
I'm just using upscaling at 1440p, though you'll need a more powerful GPU to not have to use frame gen.
Why is Johnny Silverhand reflected on the glass in the train carriage? O_O
lmao.... just to show of path tracing i guess xD
Why not? He's real in V's head.
@@anitaremenarova6662 He real for V, but not for other world.
good jobs
Still can't play lord's fallen without dropping fps maybe when the new cards come will have more stability this is with native 4k
I really think most games are made to be ran on cards that come after the current cards
The first game was like that couldn't max it with current cards until the 10 series came
Gta couldn't be ran maxed at high fps until 20 series came
This can't be played with every setting on high native with good fps 4k -1440p maybe when 50 series comes will fix that
Can you please do Far Cry 1 path tracing?
Also serious sam, wolfenstein 2009, freedom fighters etc. ?
I'll look into it.
@@MxBenchmarkPC Thanks, i think it is worth to revisit these old titles since the greatest visual improvement from path tracing is there. I saw someone in youtube that did serious sam 1 path tracing and it was incredible.
The problem of PT is just a toggle on/off, there is no config in game where you can choose what to lower to increaae a bit of performance. Example, RT have some stuff that doesnt change a shit between medium and ultra if not for the 30 fps eated... is not worth the diminishing return. Im trying the PT mod, seem working fine and gained quite few fps. Now I just need to lower some graphic options that I barely see difference between max and medium (apart the fps kill). PT vanilla 4k dlss quality (dont remember if graphic was all maxed) is 40-45 fps without FG on a 4080 super. With PT mod can reach 60-80 depend which ini you pick and if you want to optimize graphic settings.
I don't like RR ghosting on 1440p display with dlss balanced, so I just use mod for PT + RT, looks amazing and have no ghosting with frame generation
Simply don't use frame generation.
@@anitaremenarova6662 sry, I don't have 4090, I have 4070 tis and I have 144 hz display, so it's ;ess than 70 fps with RR + PT bruv
@@rostello_0 And? 70FPS is perfectly playable. You can always optimize settings to get 100FPS and you don't exactly need more for a singleplayer game.
Now I'm playing this game for the third time on my 4080 in a resolution of 3400x1900, with patch tracking I couldn't play at 60 frames on average, when driving and shooting there are few frames for me, I turned on raytracing and play at 100 frames, DLSS quality, frame generation is enabled as always in all games, patch tracking will be postponed for 5080)
That's weird, I've played the whole game (150+ hours) at 4K DLSS Balanced + FG/RR at 60fps locked with Vsync and almost never dropped below 60fps, except inside the pyramide club in Dogtown (I forgot how it's called). With optimized Path Tracing mod (tested the mod several times on this channel) and with the same settings I was getting 80-90fps.
@@MxBenchmarkPC I just can't play single-player games with less than 100 frames, network games with less than 140 frames, so I'll postpone the fourth passage with patch tracing until I buy 5080)
@@MxBenchmarkPC60FPS with FG? That means 30fps of latency. That’s horrible. How did you play like that? A controller I guess?
@od1sseas663 mouse and keyboard, perfectly smooth and playable with Vsync enabled (it's worse without Vsync).
@@MxBenchmarkPC But it’s still 30 fps latency which is really low. I personally wouldn’t be able to play like that at all.
PT is better right? But in some cases Devs did such amazing job with lighting that even PT cant keep up. 6:22. Here PT off looks actually better overall than PT on. >.>
Those are all important frequented areas of the game, doing comparisons there is pointless since devs would put extra care in making them presentable for trailers and other promos.
Hell nah it looks way better with PT. Look at the non pt reflections yuck
Scary af
Is this PT vs RT? Or is this PT vs raster?
PT vs raster.
Is this Path tracing vs. no ray tracing?
Yes.
Path tracing will be great once hardware and optimization is up to par to get the 100+ fps
In +10 years, just now after almost 15 years i can play the OG Crysis maxed out on Intel UHD graphics and now i know how the game really looks.
For a while, there were optimization problems in the Cyberpunk 2077 game. It was fixed, the FPS increase was realized in the RTX models, but it was good. By the way, I also like the Cyberpunk 2077 game very much and its story is extremely difficult, just like The Witcher 3 game, its story is very difficult, but one of the best games is Cyberpunk 2077.
where is the first location ?
It is near Lele Park fast travel point in Westbrook.
@@MxBenchmarkPC thank you brother
@MAK_007 no problem.
Fornite kids don't understand how slow this "path tracing" process is in Blender, or in animation making overall, it's just how real-life lighting works and it could take hours or days to render a single frame.
It looks lovely, but the fps hit is something else. Jesus!
If they can get this to run on 60 fps I’m in
Just don't play on 4K, problem solved.
I had to stop watching this after 2min, it's not because i dislike it or hate it.
It's because looks so gawd damn good! And i'm a little bit salty for i will never ever to experience PT and get $4000 PC 😂
fps on vs off
Just install optimized path tracing mod and hain +10 fps
Playing the game on 1440p. DLSS performance sucks do not use it. Now path Tracing doesn't worth it without DLSS because it is sooo taxing (also RTX 4080 user) However curently trying it with DLSS Quality and it does look goodt (window grills ,wired fences etc can still give away DLSS's flaws) Going to Path tracing with DLSS quality from Regular ray tracing with DLSS off taxed me 15-17 FPS.
I tot path tracing is maya path tracing. These days there are 2 types of path tracing : real and thr immitation.
1:30 where is that place?
It's in Dogtown.
@@MxBenchmarkPC Nice, now another question, does it require Phantom Liberty? I am in Dogtown now and its all in ruin and closed off
@AlexandruCarjan yes, it does require Phantom Liberty to have access to it.
Path Tracing is HUG !
Path tracing is such an awesome technology, but definitely not worth the performance hit.
Its mad.
i rather play with rt+pt on 60 ish fps than 140+ without them
Path tracing creates some kind of AI shimmer over everything, its very noticeable in fast moving parts. the image is never clear and sharp. until it is i won't use it. (I have the game + the specs for it but dislike it)
Windows 10 ...11?
Win 10.
It's brilliant tech. Having a blast experiencing it with my 4070 super.
120fps vs 20-40fps 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂😂
Path Tracing looks great when its still, but trust me when you're actually trying to play the game... at 20fps with blotching and ghosting its just terrible.
If you've got a 4090 or atleast a decent enough graphics card, with the right texture pack and either the Advanced Path Tracing mod or Ultra Path Tracing mod, you'll have high frames with very minimal ghosting. Plenty of youtube vids showcasing it if you don't have the spec for it.
@@sidhu704 I think you misunderstood my point, it's not real native resolution rendering. It's upscaling with frame generation using DLSS. The result is a problematic image which does not match the definition of pure native resolution. No graphics card can do Path Tracing yet without DLSS.
@@denu1879 Clown detected, opinion rejected. Cyberpunk doesn't have native rendering, the optimal way to play is with DLSS quality on 0.5-0.7 image sharpness.

AMD Fanboys be like :- i can't see any difference because i have crappy hardware.
People can see a difference, but the difference is miniscule. Definitely not worth the compromises that are needed to run it for a good experience. Personally, I would take native 4k max settings than 1200p upscaled (fake 4k)+ fake frames just to look at darker shadows which is only noticeable in certain circumstances.
@@DwaynedaGamer typical AMD Fanboy response 😂😂
@@xfreejack001x I have rx7600, 7800xt,4070ti...it's funny how People like you hide from the significant compromises needed for a good experience with path tracing. But keep up with the Nvidia copuim. They are surely proud of you.
AMD's most expensive card is like 750 dollars, the only cards than can run path tracing well are the RTX 4080 and 4090, both over 1000 dollars. Ngreedia fanboys love to make dumb comparisons, but AMD's goal is not to make the most powerful and expensive GPUs, but to provide good value for the average person.
@@typicalmountainbiker Don't forget that AMD isn't a charity company they released the RX 7900 XTX for 1000 USD and the RX 7900 XT for 900 USD, so they didn't want to sell cheap products they forced to lower their prices because nVidia has more features and overall better cards, more efficent, better ray tracing, better upscaler and they have CUDA. It is not Black and White like AMD is good and nVidia is bad. I remember old times when AMD was ATI and they made better GPUs back in 2002-2004 and later they were the first when Tesselation and DX11 became a thing with their HD5000 series videocards.
We'll need at least RTX 6090 to play path tracing games above 4k 60 fps without fake help of DLSS.
