Satisfying Rocking Chair Refinishing - This Was A Hard One!

  • This rocking chair refinishing job was a challenge from beginning to end, from having issues with scraping and sanding, to the stain/poly blend having its own issues! But in the end I do think it turned out beautifully. Especially from a guy that is definitely not a pro when it comes to restoration or refinishing. But I was asked to do this rocking chair refinish on a budget, from a good client, and I didn't want to disappoint, so this one definitely had some overtime hours into it.
    After the stain and poly blend was applied, I still wasn't satisfied so I added a topcoat of water based poly and for my taste, it suited it perfectly. All in all a great, but frustrating project. I always look back on past projects though, and try to learn and improve on any mistakes, or just better ways of doing things in general! Enjoy the video, Like and Subscribe if you wouldn't mind, I truly appreciate it, and remember if we make it to 1000 subscribers, we'll do a giveaway of some sort.

    My grandfather passed away in august. We cleaned out his old woodshed attic with my great grandmothers old furniture and I’m pretty sure this is the same chair! Hoping to refinish it for my first apartment! Thank you for this video! Now I know how to do it😊

      So sorry for your loss! It’s always tough losing someone, I know all too well! Hopefully when it’s finished and it looks great, you can look at it and remember him, and that’s really the point! Im sure he would be proud to see how it turned out!

      Cherish everything you have. It was probably all made in America and excellent quality. The wood, metal, and wool last longer than we do. Sending you ❤️

    A new color would be gorgeous, but it's the nostalgia of the stain that makes it so beautiful. You did a great job....new sub

    Bwahahaha, my grandmother had one of those rockers. It had gold fruit on the top. What a nightmare it was to work on! I would never have even attempted to change the color had I realized it would be such a beast. I ended up painting it rather than refinishing it with stains. I think the hardest part was those stupid eggs on the top of the back, I swear they were made of a different type of wood and just soaked in dark walnut stain.

    I see you didn't use a pre stain or wood conditioner before staining. Obviously its not always necessary, correct ?? Im about to Refinish a wooden chair and a wooden front door and would like to do the same steps you just did but i see other videos where they use a pre stain or conditioner ??

    • @Brads-Woodshed
      @Brads-Woodshed  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Really only required for wood that has a tendency to bloch when staining. Plus this one was a very dark color so even if there was blochiness it wouldn’t be noticed.

    that turned out fantastic.l. i just started on one tonight and am on here looking for tips without taking it apart, so far i been stripping and with 3 different paints and everything being turned i know im in for a job..have you used a card scraper?

    • @Brads-Woodshed
      @Brads-Woodshed  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes! On the “flat” or smooth areas that would do okay. The beaded areas are a nightmare! I couldn’t get it completely clean, thus the darker stain!

    Doesn't look as bad as mine. LOL The one I'm restoring was out in the weather and every joint has fallen apart. I have glued the seat back together five times, the arms and the rockers have falling apart and I need to remake one of the spindle tongues. I'm using Rubio Monocoat on my restoration.

    • @Brads-Woodshed

    • @renaissancewoodworking

      @@Brads-Woodshed I'm glad I did! The seat has fallen apart on my four times. I would have had to re-sand and re-stain each time. With Rubio, I can just spot stand and reapply after it's fixed.

    Wow, kind of incredible, I recently bought four dining room chairs of than same design, except that these have a fiddleback to them. Ethan Allen. I can't find the pattern anywhere. I am using opaque stain on most the carcass, and poly natural on the seat.

    Im am doing this exact same chair..i just freaked when i saw it....i know what you mean by being a pain to do...i abandoned it for almost 6 months now...didnt wanna messed with it ive hated it so much..but now i want it out of my garage and im gonna finish it..
    So let me get this straight.
    You painted it back and not a stain?Did you paint a clear over it? It looked like thats what you were doing but the end shots when dried didnt look shiny,more like a satan dull look...i did consider painting it just to be done with it but couldn't bring myself to do that...
    Im gonna do a shade or 2 darker stain to minimize the blotching you spoke of and i know will happen if i dont.ive got the 2 long spindles and the 4 balls up top to go...man i hate those spindles!.no easy way to do it. ..your chair looks good.

      This was a stain, tried a couple different colors, and the color I had was a stain and poly in one but I found out by this that I really do not like a stain and poly mix so I went over it with a satin water based poly! It was a very dark stain though

    This is a refinish, not a restoration.

      @Brads-Woodshed  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, true although there were some parts I had to repair but didn’t film, they were very minor. But you’re correct, more of a refinish than a restore.
