One glaring omission IMO : Operencia : The stolen Sun. A really great game in the wake of Might & Magic/Ishar. It's a tight univers to explore with many secrets, interesting puzzles, fine combat system and great writing.
#19 i'd recommend just based on soundtrack alone, but man one thing that they did right is the coloring. Each area has its own palette and manages to be so unique that a late game minigame about finding specific spots is not boring or hard at all. I'd also give plus points for the portrayal of love ~ "Let's paint the future"
On a indie whim atm. Picked up Cross Code, planning to play Chained Echoes and go back to finish Ara Fell. Off this List Rise of the Third Power is one i just added to my Xbox wishlist for later when i stop adding more to my backlog
In my head, Virgo vs the Zoodiac is among the best Indie games of all time. The chaotic atmosphere without thake themselves so seriously creates a fantastic background to this game. So one resource of this game, the humor, works in a good way. Art and music are amazing. Combat system is funny and very strategic. There's no random encounters and (if you want) isn't required grind, you can win by using the right gear and make a specific strategy to that specific fight.
@@ClemmyGames Another underated name on this list, that I dont see anothers channels speaking of is Omori. Omori has a unique battle system that's very creative and fun to play. Story, art and music are very good too. For an experienced jrpg player, difficulty may be on the easy side. And the game has some pace issues, alternating good moments with boring ones. But is a very solid name, better than many any old big company jrpg. And of those I played, there's only one names that wouldnt be in my list: Grimm Hollow. This one, even with a fine gameplay, I think hard to put in any list since its very ultra dump mega blaster short and casual. I usually dont mind short games, Momodora is one of my favorites metroidvania and it is on the short side, but Grimm Hollow exceeds the limit! =D
Fantastic video. I own a bunch of these but have played less than I should. I need to update my lists of what I'm going to play next. Thanks for this man.
There are a couple on here that I wasn't aware of, thanks! I'm happy to see you remembered "Grimm's Hollow" but I feel like you forgot about a bunch of the more Earthbound-like titles. An easy example is "OFF", which especially deserves to be here for being so influential along with just being good, as it strongly informed Undertale and others. Oh! And "Endless Empty"! It's a very good one, one of my favorites in its writing and experimental art (you just need to get past the first ~10 minutes, which are a little rough visually). One that you'd probably agree with is Deltarune. Even just taking current chapters in isolation it's a pretty impressive work. Also missing Fight Knight, which was really innovative both in gameplay and its combat UI. Edit: In any case, I assume you'll eventually be publishing a new "Earthbound-like RPGs" list, so know that I'm looking forward to that one. Besides the titles I mentioned already, remember also to consider including "Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass", "Nepenthe", and "Misery Street" on that list (though I probably wouldn't put them on this one). Maybe also Haeven, though that could be pushing it. Honorable mention to FrankenRPG for being the only consistently funny RPG I've seen.
I absolutely LOVED Battle Chasers. Grimm's Hollow was an amazing game, even though it was short. Great list Thanks for reminding me that I need to start Crosscode. I have it but my backlog is too big lmao

Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut, Shadowrun: Hong Kong - Extended Edition and Battletech deserved a place on this list since, when they were developed, Harebrained Schemes was an independent studio.
I feel like Battle Chasers should be much higher up on the list. It's still to this day the only turn based JPRG to really capture my attention and hold it
I'll talk about the ones I either have or will be most definitely getting. Edge of Eternity - I actually bought this early access and STILL haven't touched it. Not that I don't want to - I just remember buying it with other games at the time and said other games caught my attention faster than this one and it ended up going into backlog purgatory - which is a shame. I will be playing this when I get the chance as it looks awesome then and now. Indivisible - I happily backed this one and it's legitimately one of the most enjoyable turnbased RPGs I've played recently. That said, the "inappropriate" things briefly mentioned is sadly a big, red mark on what could've been a potential franchise, as Indivisible's story, lore, and characters were amazing and interesting. However, this studio head wasn't the only one who worked on this game. Many others did, and the game itself is fantastic. If you're into Valkyrie Profile-like combat, don't punish yourself or the other devs and give this one a shot. Jack Move - Played the demo when it was available and loved it. Backlog is huge right now so I will get this, but later down the line. Battle Chasers - Greatly enjoyed this game and ngl the biggest part of my enjoyment was the artwork. Joe Mad is phenomenal. Game itself is also awesome of course. There were a few sticking points here and there, but I overall had alot of fun with it and am currently playing through Ruined King which is practically a sequel but in the League of Legends universe. Hylics 2 - I really need to go ahead and pull the trigger on this one. I'm 1000% sure I'll have a blast with this game while high. Come on folks let's be real here. This game is made for it haha. Grimm's Hollow - this looks pretty awesome, and it's free!? Welp, backlog extended. ;_; Bug Fables - I've heard great things about this one and having a fun lighthearted RPG sounds great to me. Another backlog extension incoming, oof. Omori - From lighthearted to overwhelming depression from what I've heard about this one. Will be getting this too. Cosmic Star Heroine - Already on my wishlist and will be deeefinitely getting. Fun sci-fi setting with a Chrono Trigger-like combat scheme? I'm in. Lisa - Stuck in backlog hell for me, but will be seeing the light sooner than later. It looks and feels like such a uniquely odd game and in our current gaming world - something like this is needed. Disco Elysium - I did not know this was indie! While I don't know when I'll get to play it, everyone I know who has tells me it's a must buy, so I'll give it a shot too. I love a good story, and this one sounds like it most definitely has one. Undertale - What hasn't been said about this game yet? Ignoring all hype, all popularity, its rabid fanbase, and so on - I can safely say this is one of my all time favorite games. And I played this BEFORE it exploded. Made sure while I played it I didn't let anyone else spoil anything. I just bought it, sat down, played....and kept playing...and kept playing...and when the end hinted at other endings, I continued to play. I let no other outside forces push me in any specific way. I let the game itself tell me how awesome it is and I agreed with it wholeheartedly. What I will say is this: The game's characters were so, so endearing, that when the game suggested in a particular way to let them be, I let them be. Won't say any more than that. Those who know, know. Crosscode - I'm so mad at myself about this one. I bought it early access and played what they had available then. Loved every moment of it (though i do remember searching for everything on a particular mountainous map was a bit exhausting), however I never returned to it even after it was fully released! It got stuck in backlog hell like so many others. But I'm not gonna let it stay there much longer. I got another indie game I'm working on at the moment, but once that's completed, Crosscode will be my next. There are quite a few other games on this list I'm definitely eyeing and will make it at the very least to my wishlist for now. I mentioned my backlog alot because....it's huge. Insanely huge. I could probably start a youtube channel of me playing through all these games and have content for a decade - I'm legit not even joking here. Either way, all of these games shown have something to them that interests me and I hope they all succeed. Great list!
BUG FABLES LETS GO idk how hard it is to make a paper-mario like game but this is like the first in ~15years that i found that felt like paper mario, while still being its own game. really amazing game and i honestly beg for more of these games
I was here expecting to see Original Sin 2 on first place, but I understand since the game appears to be a high budget game produced by a traditional publisher, but it is a indie game produced by people who love the traditional tabletop role-playing games.
I very much so enjoyed Edge of Eternity but the ending is missing. You play the whole game with 1 goal and it ends without worrying about the goal at all. Maybe they’ll tackle it in DLC or a sequel. It’s still worth playing though.
#25 was kind of ok for most of the game, since i was going on nostalgia for the battle mechanic, but the last chapter was too long, i went for the hidden boss, and the amount of grind i had to do to defeat him, and how long that fight was even with the ridiculous stats i grinded was too much. And worse yet, last boss was just as long taking into account i was overlevelled and had bloated stats from grinding. Guess i'd recommend it by stating "dont go after all trophies" xD
I got Kaiju big battel from a bundle but didn't realize it was based off of a wrestling show. I have yet to play the game but I should also check the show as it seems pretty awesome.
5:40 Ikenfell best game on the list , I finished it on Xbox one when it was on Xbox Game Pass. Amazing When it's on sale I intend to buy it for my Xbox Series X.
Good timing on this video, i've personally really been enjoying Coromon, they put more work into that than i feel necessary, which is a weird thing to say for any video game since like 2017.
I must admit, this list was rather jrpg-heavy compared to my own taste in indie rpgs. Like, a whole top 25 indie rpgs without a single Spiderweb Software game?
I just got Ruined King, because it was compared to battle chasers, the battle system is the same with some extra things, and even some characters are almost reskin of others in battle chasers, if you liked battle chasers try ruined king , you dont need to know anything about LoL to play
Genius of sappheiros is top tier. Unfortunately its doujin and not indie and has no western sales options =(. I also suggest labyrinth of touhou 2 which is on steam now. I prefer 1 over 2 but 2 is still good. As for crosscode, I thought this was a list of turn based rpgs, but whatever, crosscode is definitely a game that deserves #1 recognition, amazing game that I suggest to everyone. Actually you mentioned being an amnesiac in that game, but I think that is an overdone plotpoint I detests. Crosscode makes it fresh and interesting though by making you an amnesiac WITH speech impairment. The dialogue that ensues is gold!
I couldn't get into CrossCode because it's a puzzle game first, an action RPG second, and I don't like puzzle games. After 15 hours or so, I stopped playing for good, because on top of the puzzles, the controls were weird and I never got used to it, either with mouse and keyboard or with a controller. And if that was not enough, the music was annoying! Not all themes were, but some were, and you have to spend long time in areas listening to the same, screeching songs... A terrible experience to me.
Unpopular opinion but Legrand Legacy was pretty mediocre. The cutscenes were great, the minigames were a mixed bag (some I loved others I didn't care about), the characters and story were...okay although some got pretty annoying. The gameplay had its moments and I did like the attack timing a la Legend of Dragoon but near the endgame kinda it became a bit of a slog imo (and this is coming from someone who, for example, played Mind Zero). The FF7/8/9 aesthetic was pretty cool but that's cold comfort. But the last dungeon puzzle was a complete mess which kinda ruined what imho would've been a great Jrpg. Because of that and some pretty meh moments its not even in my Top 50 best RPGs (maybe Top 74). I like my retro games and rpgs and all but here the more negative traits the ones have kinda ruin it and the game has quite a few of those. Now if this game was made 20 years ago and I played it back then it would be a different story because even whatever flaws and inconveniences it had I wouldn't mind back then. So my final review for Legrand Legacy, as much as it pains me to say it it's a 5.7/10 if not almost a 6. It has no bugs that Ive seen aside from one bug that I encountered which made me stuck and run in place and made me waste a lot of time restarting and getting back to that point. Oh yeah btw I know retro games need retro traditions but at least put some checkpoints or more save points so I don't have to repeat puzzles and cutscenes because that 💩 's getting annoying. Also Jasu Bakuhatsu should play this to see my point. Game could be a lot better but it's not. And this is why its the 25th on this video's list. ;)
CrossCode is fantastic and 100% deserves its place. It's a game that is easily on the same level as Hollow Knight or Hades and it's a shame that it hasn't received much attention.

Loved BattleChasers and I hope for a sequel. Ruined King was fun too.
I was here expecting to see Original Sin 2 on first place, but I understand since the game appears to be a high budget game produced by a traditional publisher, but it is a indie game produced by people who love the traditional tabletop role-playing games.
Larian is technically independent but has 200+ members on staff. Not such a fair comparison to the solo devs and smaller teams
I very much so enjoyed Edge of Eternity but the ending is missing. You play the whole game with 1 goal and it ends without worrying about the goal at all. Maybe they’ll tackle it in DLC or a sequel.
It’s still worth playing though.
I did play Jack Move demo back then but sadly didn't get a free copy.
Wildermyth not being here is a criminal omission
CrossCode in top 1, you are based Sir
Playing Battle Chasers Nightwar now. Amazing game.
nice
I got Kaiju big battel from a bundle but didn't realize it was based off of a wrestling show. I have yet to play the game but I should also check the show as it seems pretty awesome.
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass is amazing as well I'd put it in the top 10 for sure
I would add the recent Crystal Project to this list myself.
Would you put Evoland II into another category? Otherwise it deserve a spot in the Top 10 for me.
Cosmic star heroine is awesome
5:40 Ikenfell best game on the list , I finished it on Xbox one when it was on Xbox Game Pass. Amazing When it's on sale I intend to buy it for my Xbox Series X.
It would be great if you added Steam ratings to each game. Love your content
Battle Chasers is excellent! Loved iot.
Undertale's the GOAT !
(LISA also)
Fun fact: Omori, in Romanian, means 'you kill'
ah!
Rise of the Third Power looks epic.
Wartales is really beautiful graphics.
Lieat looks like a great tale.
If CrossCode is not number one I'll riot...
Good
😉
I played first 3 and Bug fables. And i thought im aware of indie rpgs lol.
It's no secret that Undertale would be in the top 2 😊
Ah yes quirky earthbound inspired RPGs are great! My fav underrated masterpiece is Jimmy and The Pulsating Mass.
I really REALLY hope they can optimize Crosscode for the Steam Deck...
What is the game on the thumbnail?
Good timing on this video, i've personally really been enjoying Coromon, they put more work into that than i feel necessary, which is a weird thing to say for any video game since like 2017.
How you gonna claim a game that's still in early access deserves to be on a Top # of All Time list?
Crosscode is amazing, I can highly recommend it to all.
Kaiju looks rly good
well selected 👌
Thank you 🙂
I must admit, this list was rather jrpg-heavy compared to my own taste in indie rpgs. Like, a whole top 25 indie rpgs without a single Spiderweb Software game?
Rise of the third power is so good and funny at the same time
Mmhmm
@@ClemmyGames wdym XD . I finished it and its so good XD ( that hmm is scary 😱🤣 )
I just got Ruined King, because it was compared to battle chasers, the battle system is the same with some extra things, and even some characters are almost reskin of others in battle chasers, if you liked battle chasers try ruined king , you dont need to know anything about LoL to play
I came here only to complain about a list without Crosscode. What a pleasant surprise
Thanks found a game to play, Wartales.
Good!
what game is the thumbnail
Did you intentionally leave Darkest Dungeon off the list?
Yeah due to the “run based” structure but I never quite know where to put it as well since it’s not quite a rogue lite
Thank you.
No Cris Tales? 😥
I can say I played almost all games in this list
nice
what's the game with the girl on the cover of the video?
Battle Chasers: Nightwar
And this is why its the 25th on this video's list. ;)
To brave of you to not put number 2 as number 1
Brave but crazy
God help you with this crazy fans
Crosscode is the best 👌🏽
mmhmm
Bug fables is awesome!
Where is Eastward?
