These days horrible things are being done to the World, I would like to add a comment about that.
Most Danish political analysts (in this case experts on Russia and members of the military academy) claimed as late as Wednesday that is was very unlikely that Russia would invade Ukraine any further. It would simply be a stupid thing to do even from a cynical point of view.
A few days ago an analyst said that Putins problem with Ukaine was that it was developing well. Not quite as the former Soviet countries in EU, there's still significant corruption but the ukrainian government has made reforms. Life in Ukraine is approaching life in Europe west of Belarus. If no one stops EU, it will deliver societies that allow people to live a life that most people in the World want. Russia is unable to deliver these frames of society as it is a plutocracy some say kleptocracy. This analyst said that Putin think that when the Russian people see other Slavian people live in well functioning societies, they will begin to ask why don't we live like that?
Today, Thursday, other analysts independently support this theory. But it sounds strange to me, because the premise is that most Slavian people think that they can't build good societies. That is of cause not the case, anyone can do that. It takes understanding of how to do it. We must all understand that politics is important, we must contribute to make the big communities we are a part of work well. That is engaging in politics is a respectable thing to do. It is not something you do to your own benefit. You can find selfish bastards everywhere, if too few engage in politics we leave the power to them.
What has Denmark done in this situation? We have sent 200 soldiers to one of the Baltic countries (people are quite nervous there), two F-16 to Poland and 8 - 10 IT experts to Ukraine (Russia is waging cyper war). Nothing that V. Putin can see as a threat, or should be able to see as a threat, but an attempt to stabilize the situation.
And I sit here writing this.
The singing is in a church so it's natural that many comments have a religious approach. I'm an atheist. I think it is essential to achieve peace to respect people of other confessions than your own as just as much human beings as yourself. By principle I don't care much for theology but I like the Bible in one way (I might like it in others if I read it). They say that the Gospels contradict each other about Jesu life. If the one is right an other is a lie! Therefore christians often have a good understanding of different experiences leading to different perceptions.
This Saturday one of the most respectable places to be seems to be in a Russian prison! I just heard "DR P1 Orientering" in the radio, the daily program bringing background, analysis and interviews about politics. Today, first of all about the war in Ukraine of cause. There are demostrations all over the World, in USA, India, UK, Denmark, in the Baltic countries they sing according to their tradition and at Brandenburger Tor, Berlin they sang "Sag mir wo die Blumen sind" (Where have all the flowers gone?)(3500 at the demonstration), the program ended with a recording of that. In Moscow several hundreds were arrested. Chinese medias downsize the war. Thursday there were peaceful demonstrations both in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
"Orientering" brought interviews with Ukrainians and a Russian in Denmark and Danes in Ukriane. One Ukranian has a very scared brother in Kyiv he sits in a cellar hearing explosions getting closer. In general the Ukranians fight back even though they are fully aware they are facing a much stronger army. A lot are enroling the new homeguard and it is expected that civilians will use Molotov cocktails. More than 100.000 Ukranians have fled their country, more than 50.000 to Poland, Lviv is a hub. The Ukranian authorities wont let men aged 18 - 60 years flee. About a week ago the Danish embassy moved to Lviv.
Right wing nationalist politicians in EU in general support Ukraine and will welcome refugees, I didn't expect that. In USA D. Trumps seems to support V. Putin, he's not happy about NATO. As he or someone like him might be in the White House two years from now there's a general wish to strengthen the armies in Europe. To me armament is a waste of money but when the neighbours are dangerous we have to do it.
Most sanctions are targetted V. Putin and his rich friends others involve blocking trade between Russia and 3 of its 5 largest trading partners. Putin is not expected to care about it and it causes less prosperity not only in Russia but it is the right thing to do.
