Such a touching song! David Gates wrote this song in memory of his father who died in 1963 & never saw the success he achieved with Bread. I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Diary", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender", "Aubrey" etc. In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".
@@AngelDReacts It's written on purpose to have a double meaning, so it could be taken either way. But it was about his dad, but in they day they needed it to be seen as a long song also to sell more records. His voice is much better on most recordings, seems the music was to forward on this video.
Bread are icons! David Gates has the most beautifully smooth voice. So many memories! Back then there was no auto tune. This is pure raw talent! Love your reaction!
You're right, Angel. It's a beautiful song to tell that special person in your life that they mean everything to you. I haven't heard Bread in a long time. Thank you Angel. I sent you a request on patron.
You’ve found your way to one of the best soft rock bands of the 70’s! Good reaction! You should experience t 4:38 hem the way most of us did in the 70’s. Listen to the studio recordings. They are cleaner than the crappy sound systems of live performance in the 70’s. Other bread songs youall love: If, Baby Ima Want You, Diary, The Last Time, Make It With You, Aubrey, It Don’t Matter To Me, Guitar Man, Look What You’ve Done, Too Much….
He wrote this about his dad who passed away when he was in high school, David Gates and Bread are an incredible band with some great songs they are definite under rated
Unfortunately David is singing this to his dad after his dad passed away. PS, "Bread" (David Gates) wrote tons of xln't songs. Make It With You, Baby I'm A Want You, Aubrey, It Don't Matter To Me, Let Your Love Go, Lost Without Your Love, If and a few others.
The Diary, and especially The Guitar Man and David solo on the Goodbye Girl, written for the movie of the same title [Neil Simon, playwright, wrote the stage play and supervised the making of the movie somewhat].
This song was released in 1972. I heard this song on the radio in the early 70's, The version you had was in 1978 in London I guess. The sound in this version was rather muffled, but there are others of it where he sounds much better. David Gates had that innocent humble way about him that just melts your heart. You have to do "If" next. It's short but you may have those glistening tears in your eyes by the end of this one Angel. If was released in 1971. "Bread - If Original [1971]". th-cam.com/video/IQyKMueMFGk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aCm61svSyyiqg3S5
Nice!! Ok surely you have heard the song "IF"?? I would make that as the next by Bread! And since I am the best suggestererr in the whole wide WORLD 🌎 also; MOTHER FREEDOM and MAKE IT WITH YOU 💟 Great Reaction Angel!! First time visiting. Seen the thumbnail and had to! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️🎸🤟🏼
This was known as "Soft Rock," "invented" by David Gates and Bread, The Carpenters and a host of others starting around 1970. The song was a hit in 1972, this is a 1978 perform ance. ne thing must be made clear, no David Gates, no Bread...he was the songwriter and lead singer, and went off on his own when the band broke up the 2ND time [lol] around 1977.
One of the great soft rock bands from the early 70's. Sadly infighting limited their output to just a few albums. David Gates was the primary composer and vocalist. Check out 'Lost Without Your Love' and 'Look What You've Done,' are a couple of their under the radar classics.
David Gaites was the lead of Bread and he is one of the all time greats. This one Everything I Own is a great song and its about the loss of his dad and how much he missed him. They were very close. I reccomend you react to there songs if, Diary, and guitar man.
I always thought it was a sad song about a former lover. Just last year I learned that it was about his dead father and now I find it downright depressing.
If you would like to hear an emotional song listen to "Vincent" by Don McLean. Recommend you do a quick search regarding the meaning of song prior to listening. Many reactors go without knowing the meaning and seem lost.
Live performance , but the drums are way too noisy on the chorus, should have used brushes. The line "Is there someone you know, you're loving them so, but taking them all for granted. You may lose them one day, someone takes them away, and they don't hear the words you long to say." That line makes me break down everytime when I think about my younger brother, my only sibling, who died in 2020. We never had a chance to say goodbye.
A classic that brings back memories. He wrote this as a tribute for his father, who had passed away.

Oh my, I got it so wrong! It is so much more touching now!

May I suggest She’s Not There by the Zombies and Midnight Confessions by The Grass Roots and All Day and All Of the Night by the Kinks.
Great song! Plz try this one! “Tracy Byrd “ song is “keeper of the stars “ you will enjoy that song
David Gates wrote all of their songs. He is a great ballad writer. He is from Tulsa.
Actually-- he didn't write and/or sing all their songs. Some were by James Griffin and Rob Royer.
This songs about his father that

Aubrey by Bread //
If you think that hearing it is tough, try singing it, knowing what it's really about.

That was David Gates of Bread but not the band. Listen to the Best of Bread version. The mix is ALOT better. The whole Best of Bread album was great!
Or I don't have any bread
David Gates is one of the best !!!
Back in the 70s. Bread ment money.... do you have a any bread..man...
I have heard that in The Jeffersons! They also said "dough" lol Iove the 70s!
