Great tips. Good to see Nige. Keep up the good work 🚴🚴🚴🚴
I wish I knew a Nige! Great to see him back on TH-cam. Realistic tips thanks guys.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching ☺️
Another good tip is check the Bin Collection day :).
Nige...he's alive
Don't sound so amazed I am not that old i just had a very hard paper round. :)
Love Nigel's contributions. Sensible and wise. Cheers Nige
The mental side is also so important, I'm glad you mentioned that. I always think what a privilege it is to get out in the countryside and to experience the world. There is so much to be thankful for to be able to "feel" all of the life around us, we share our world with so many wonderful things, and to sometimes just drink the scenery in, and let it take your breath away. I think it's just wonderful, and such a joy to be able to have that in my life. That's what keeps me motivated to ride, and when I'm riding.
I agree with everything you say, it works for me 👌🚲👍
That’s so true! And I always tell myself as well when I’m struggling that’s it’s a privilege to be struggling on a bike ride - as we have the freedom to have chosen to go out and ride and cause our own suffering up hills 😅 so much to be grateful for out in the countryside! Hope you have lots of happy rides ☺️
nige is a legend. wondered when we would be seeing him again
I don't do "monster" endurance rides because I'm a bit of a racer, but I find that the "80/20" system works well for me - for those of you who don't know what that is; I spend 80% of my rides just trundling along at a pace where I have no difficulty holding a normal conversation with my fellow riders ( as a rough guide, in theory you should be able to do the whole ride with your mouth shut, and just breathing through your nose - it's not practical to do so, but that's a guide as to the level of effort for this type of riding) It's faster than a recovery ride where you're hardly pushing the pedals at all, but if you start to notice your breathing, then you're going too fast. For me it's about 130-150 Watts. I can go for 2,3,4 hours plus at that pace and not feel very fatigued at the end. The remaining 20% or 2 rides out-of-10 I really work legs-and-lungs really hard. Using this method I have the necessary endurance base but don't leave out the ability to hold a decent pace for a long time if I need to. Also by spending most of my rides riding easy, I build up my ability to recover from short hard bursts, climbs and longer fast-paced sections of a ride - astonishingly so in fact. I may not pull the numbers that the Pro's do, but I am in the top 2-3% for my age group. I've been known to attack on a 12% climb of 1.2Km with a burst of 680Watts from the bottom up and over the top to drop my opposition so that's proof enough for me that sensible planning - and sticking to it really works.
Thanks for the pointers! Nige, the dragon you saw was from YOUR shadow!
The first thing I do when I’m going to watch one of your videos is to click the “like” button straight away because I’m guaranteed I’m going to enjoy the video! You are producing a very informative and entertaining channel, I wish you all the success with it.
Ahh thank you so much!! Really glad you’re enjoying the videos ☺️
Great to see Nigel back, I was only thinking the other day he’s not featured much. Now we need your dad back on the channel again!!
Ohhh well you’ll like the next video then….my Dad is on that one 😬😂
Awesome Amy thanks to you and Nige for the great tips 😊🚴🏻👍🚴♀️ Pete
Great tips, great vid.
Poor Kyle at work!!
And Chester ! ❤️🐾🐾🐾
Valid point from Nige regarding being able to fix mechanical issues. I watched another 'Tuber suffer serious brake problems with his hydraulic disc set up that eventually forced him to abandon his long distance ride. It's one of the reasons I prefer cable operated brakes and a Rohloff hub for maximum reliability. Proper maintenance and preparation go without saying, too. Tip from me - Selle SMP saddle for the longest rides.
Great tips form Nige and yourself. I do like listening to music keeps my spirits up 😊
Very inspiring video as a whole. Especially "don't let ya mind put ya off" - Nige gives me hope too! Wonderful personality!
Brilliant video and fabulous tips 👍😃
Thanks! ☺️🙌
Nige is awesome! Thanks for all the tips! Much appreciated!!
No problem! ☺️🙌
Hooray for Nige, good to see him back.
Good tip ringing Kyle for encouragement but won't he get a bit fed up if we all start calling him at all hours of the day?
haha 😂
😂😂😂 he’ll have to charge!
Great info
Thank you for the tips, Amy❤ Also from Nige😊
You are so welcome!
Nice tips, thanks. You both have a great attitude. It's pleasure to follow. I felt like I would have been there.
Ahh glad you enjoyed it ☺️
Great photos.
Top tips!
Nige is back, brilliant. He loves you really Amy
Haha yes!
Great tips, all very accurate, speaking from experience, just to add to the list, quality sleep on multi day events is super critical.
Yes good point! Better to stop and sleep for longer as you’ll do better the next lot of miles with more sleep ✔️
Very nice tips thank you. And on a completely different note, I went out for a short ride yesterday, just wearing short shorts and short sleeved jersey, (well, socks, shoes, helmet and glasses too) and didn't even feel cold at all. That is the first warm ride this year, for me anyway, so lets hope we get plenty more of those 😊
No problem! Ahh yay!! Hope you had a great ride ☺️So did I this weekend, first proper summer ride let’s hope the good weather stays!
amy Thanks for all the long distance tips.this summer I start bikepacking in la belle France😁
Ahh amazing!! Have the best time!
@@amy.cycling.adventures thx amy
Some excellent tips.....
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful 🙌
You are an expert but more importantly, you’re a writer and you earn the right to give advice I mean come on you’ve done thousands of miles of driving your experience you and Kyle
Ahh thank you!
Oh, by the way, you and I y’all hit the nail on the head good advice
I am doing a 130 mile cycle ride for charity next week with a big group from work. I am massively under trained with my furthest distance so far being 40 miles, but there are 3 or 4 stops during the day for food/ice cream and looks like the longest section is 39 miles. Will watch this video the night before for a few tips. I haven't been cycling with any headphones in so far but will put my airpods in my pockets just incase I need to put some music on! Will also try and remember not to eat gels etc too early and start the day off with bananas and protein bars! I am looking forward to my ride but also nervous!!
Massive massive good luck for your ride! I hope it goes well, take your time, enjoy it & think of that end feeling 🫶 let us know how you get on! We have a Strava group so feel free to post it in there so we can see your mega achievement! 🫶
Very Good I injured that very much well done 👍.
Love Nige
OMG!!!!! It’s Nige!
Great tips there
Glad you found it helpful ☺️
Congrats on being down to three days a week at the day job! That has to be a good feeling.
Thanks so much! Yes it is! Can’t believe it!
Great tips and return of the Nige - love it!!! Amy do you use aero bars? Thanks for another great video
Glad you enjoyed it! And yes I do ☺️
On a long ride I like to change my hand position on the handle bars time to time
Nice to see Nige, was his warf (Jan) a tad camera shy......
'Ull' east yorkshire.
Yep very 🤣
For hand comfort - I put packing foam under the bar tape on the drops. Not just one layer either - not afraid of it looking weird or “uncool”. And yes definitely get Di2 (don’t listen to Nige 😅 )
Ahh that’s a good idea! And yes I’m with you on the Di2 😂
I missed Nige and his no-nonsense attitude.
Love the tips 👌 I always cycle on my own, try new routes but going somewhere I’ve never been before gives me anxiety makes me feel sick for no reason at all 😩😩 wish I could stop it 😔
Ahh I’m so sorry to hear that, I think we all get nervous sometimes, maybe see if you can join a local club and find some people to ride with - you can usually count on an Audax to meet people!
@@amy.cycling.adventuresthank you, I have been asked to join a local club so considering it 😊
@@mark-yorkshiredrone Try plotting some semi familiar courses and riding them following your bike computer's instructions. Even if you’re sure of where you are follow them. Maybe this will help build confidence in the computer’s instructions. I find new routes exciting and I’ve messed up quite a few times. Keep safe.
@@kge420thank you for the advice, appreciate it thanks
Good to see Nige back. Thought he had snobbed you Amy😀
Where has the Yippeee gone?
If I knew what snobbed you meant I would defo do that!! 🤣 She is just always abroad now hob nobbing with the stars.
Haha he’s still here 😂😂 oh don’t worry they’ve not gone, didn’t want to annoy Nige any more 😂
@@amy.cycling.adventures 😀
Good advice the key is make the ride enjoyable because if you’re not having fun, probably not gonna do it again
100% all about enjoyment!
Just to add that as well as "Calendar" events Audax UK also do events called "Permanents" where you can ride solo and on a date you decide. Regards.
Ahh yes of course and DIY where you create your own route and ride it ☺️
Kyle and Nige........great double act
Good tips.. i dont plan on doing too long of a ride, im happy just reaching a 52 miler.. thats long enough for me🙂👌
Thanks! Perfect, ride the way you enjoy ☺️
Sorry to hear about your tinkly fingers, I am dealing with cyclist's palsy right now too - had to rein in my riding for a bit as the numbness on a couple of finger tips is constant. Last time I had it was PBP in 2019 - took about 6 months to complete disappear.
Yep it always takes a good six months after PBP for my little fingers to regain their feeling and i feel too old to learn to ride tri-bars. So far it has always come back fingers crossed if you will excuse the pun.
@@Misirableoldgitinamysvideos It's just annoying it's happened right when Summer finally has arrived!
Edit: My solution is am wearing full finger mtb gloves over the offending hand - can't stop completely.
@@BikepackingAdventures Yep I have just ignored it and got on with life, never lost strength or grip just weird numbness and tingly. In fact both are a bit tingly after this weekends 400. After getting shermers neck in 2015 I did wonder about a recumbent! Maybe that is the answer?
@@BikepackingAdventures I find no mitts helps or ones with hardly any pad. The palm above my little finger seems to be my trigger point. So developed a technique of riding with my hands on the bar curves with just the pad above my thumb contacting on the bar. think it is subtly different for all of us.
Probably, I did buy some fingerless gloves recently as was finishing off-road with obvious awkward pressure being applied on my palms, that seemed to do the trick, but send the vibrations elsewhere up the hand. I've lowered my saddle since then lol
Aftershox headphones and a decent audiobook can keep you going for hours!
Ohh yes that’s a good one!
I’m a brickie and would say the same thing as Kyle. After a day smashing them in it’s hard to get on the bike
Yes I don’t know how he does it!!
@@amy.cycling.adventures I bet he told you to say that😂😂
all natural shea butter
Great big as usual lovely. To see Nigel but would have been so nice to see his wife too
Great video not big, ha ha 🤣 😊
@@8259lv She is very camera shy!
Thanks!! Ahh Nige’s wife doesn’t like the camera 😅
Ah shame he’s so funny 🤣
😂 luv Nige!
Agree with Nige re gels and sweets. Personally, I just can't get on with them. Bananas and malt loaf keep me going.
I’m the same! 😅
Hi Just subscribed. Do you think the gels ect, people have to much to soon and we haven't really exerted enough to burn off the cards??
Hiya! Ahh thanks so much for the subscribe, I’m no expert in any way, I’m not really sure to be honest! I know people who use gels throughout a ride and people that don’t use them at all or just at the end of a ride. I’ve never used them 😅 but I do eat regularly on my long rides to keep going!
Ironically at 4:25 Nige saying he thought a Dragon was followings him when the roof behind him made it look like he had some wings. 😅
Wow will have to watch it again cos there are people who say I have wings and horns! 😉🤣
True!! 😂😂
Great video.. liking Nigel. I bet he has some hallucination stories before he was a cyclist.
Well there was that one time.......... 😉
Strong smell of animal odure, quieter roads with places to stop and admire your surroundings, even familiar roads can have dead badgers at surprising places, those sort of things keep me moving.
I would like Nige’s recommendation on Beer brewed in and around the UK. Maybe Kyle could chime in?
I will get straight onto that. Amy Amy Amy me and Kyle have a spin off series can we borrow your Go Pro!
I’m sure Kyle would have a lot to say about it!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Chester would be a pinarello dogma F12........
'Ull' east yorkshire
Haha a Pinarello side car for Chester 😂
Jealous of you getting to ride in beautiful weather. We're here in Oklahoma, USA and it's 100 degrees F. , or 38C. hot hot hot!
Ohh wow yes that’s a bit too hot!
Great to see Nige again. Not sure I’ve ever considered carrying a tyre and probably never will.
Enjoy your break Amy and have some real time away - leave the cameras at home.
I have done it for years and never used it! I just know if I don't i will have too! It is zip tied under my rear rack and just lives there. Just an old worn tyre that gets replaced when i change my tyres.
Thanks so much! I’m the same haha not carried a tyre although if I ever needed one and didn’t have it I’m sure Nige would tell me off 😂
Gore jacket 😮 where do you get the money love ?!😅😅😅
😂😂 Kyle actually got me that for my birthday 😬
I’m sure an actual dragon was following Nige😂
😂😂
Great video...our Princess Amy Malones is super fit...unfortunately it looks like our Prince of Sandwich Lands,Kyle The Great did wake up with a tremendous hangover...but that's life...just keep on with your fantastic work !!!
"Obviously, I'm not an expert..." Ha, ha! After riding APN 24?
Haha I always have things I can learn 😅
‘I was wondering things like, How much should I eat on a long ride? How fast should I ride? How long should I sleep for?
So I decided to ask ten audax experts, take the average, and go with that.
And do you know what each of them said?
“Ask ten audax experts, take the average, and go with that.” ‘
😄
@@therealbonj The mean of means is the average -- on average.
Mamma mia fa freddo lì da voi 😅
7:25 as a vegan, rice is just as good for protein as well as carbs
Yes!! Good point 🙌☺️
Only eating every 1 to 2 hours doesn’t sound like a proper fuelling strategy. Your glycogen levels will be depleted. Riding for 2 hours on nothing but fresh air can’t be good for your health. Carbs whether you like it or not are essential for fuelling.
Everyone is different like I say ☺️ I know lots of people that eat every 20 mins or 30 mins on a ride, for me I’ve found 1-2 hrs works well, Kyle on the other hand wouldn’t ride that long without food so we’re all different ~ find what works for you ☺️
Sorry I don't like being told what to do, but nice video
You weren’t being told what to do, it was advice.
You get out of wrong side of bed!
I love the internet for this very reason.
@@perrysimo1 Wrong. She created the video, nobody asked for it. Therefore it's a dictation.
Oh, by the way, you and I y’all hit the nail on the head good advice
