I never realized how much LinkedIn cares about meaningful engagement over quick tricks! Key takeaways for me: 1) Limit those tags and hashtags to keep your posts from looking spammy. 2) Longer doesn't always mean better-it's about relevance and expertise. 3) Who knew comments need to be thoughtful and not just 'great post'? And engaging within the first hour is crucial; didn't realize LinkedIn worked on its own 'magic hour'! Love learning these deeper insights, super helpful for leveling up my LinkedIn game. Thanks!
You're so welcome, Robert! The main thing is that if you do your best to serve your audience, you're 90% of the way there. :-) I'm so glad you got lots of takeaways with this video!
Wow! So loving your videos. I posted a short article today - and Boom! after watching this video realized that I did a couple of wrong things. The biggest one is that I added too many external links. Who would have thought? Totally would not have known I did that without watching this lesson. Super Thanks.
I'm so glad you found this helpful! Yes, too many external links can be a problem, but now you know moving forward! Thank you for your kind words about my videos, too. :-)
I posted my first article on LinkedIn. I cited my sources and included links for readers to gain more information about a topic I touched on. I did not think it would be considered spammy. Thank you for the information.
Thank you for your insights. Remember that what you consider spammy and what LinkedIn considers spammy may be different. It's totally understandable that you cited your sources. But I would avoid providing more than one link whenever possible.
Three reasons why I subscribed: 1. Succint tips. 2. You are enaging. 3. I was able to apply your tips immediately. 4. Your responses to comments were genuine.
Thank you so much! I don't know if I've ever gotten an itemized list of reasons why someone subscribed, so I appreciate that! I'm especially happy that you were able to use the tips right away. :-)
The top vs recent button was insightful. Engaging on others' posts was a game-changer for me. I batch time through the day to do this now. I tripled my followers in just a couple of months by doing that.
Thanks I enjoyed this video and also found it very helpful. I think I may be doing many of the things you've suggested but it helps to reaffirm a few points.
I was curious about LinkedIN SSI and you make a checklist video out of it. I can't wait to see the results. This is a ckecklist now! thank you for your content. For anyone who is looking to make the first dive to LinkedIn Algorithm, this video is perfect. Easy to diggest. I love it!
Hi Ivan! I have a video about SSI that you're welcome to watch. My comment settings prevent me (and anyone else) from sharing links in the comments, but if you go to my video page and search for SSI, you'll find it. The video is older but the content is still relevant. I hope that helps! And thank you so much for your kind words about my LinkedIn algorithm video!
Great video and explanation of the algo. Here's a dilemma I'm facing. I have around 1800 personal connections. I recently created a company page with almost no followers. Am I better off posting articles on my company profile or on my personal profile? Will the algorithm basically ignore the company article since it has no connections?
Yes, definitely post through your personal profile. Even if you had the same number of company page followers as you do profile connections, your posts would still go way farther through your profile.
This was tremendously helpful, thank you! I heard LI is constantly tweaking their algorithm, as they are also experimenting how to keep more eyeballs for longer. How much of the things you mentioned in this video is still correct / have changed? To me, most of the things you mentioned are "timeless" (ie ppl still like to read simple language, still prefer seeing one image instead of many etc). but still curious how much of this advice still stands today. Thankks again, very helpful video
I'm so glad you found the video helpful! :-) Most of the advice is indeed timeless. Things do always tweak slightly with the decision tree and with which formats LinkedIn is pushing most. As long as you focus on serving your audience, communicate your message well, and use the formats you're most excited about, you'll do just fine. :-)
Thank you! And it's cool that you're asking about articles, because I'm in the process of creating an in-depth video about articles vs. posts. Probably the main reason articles aren't pushed as much is because they're a lot longer, and most people are in "scroll" mode when they're on any social media, including LinkedIn. That said, personally, my articles get more impressions than any other format I do -- even slightly edging out PDF carousel documents! That's because I do 2 best practices with articles: (1) I publish all my articles through my LinkedIn newsletter, so that my newsletter subscribers get notified of my article, depending on their account settings, and (2) I write a post that directs people to the article. So articles CAN work extremely well, but from my experience, only with these best practices, which honestly take very little time to do.
First of all, thank you for the clear advice. As someone new to LinkedIn it's very helpful to hear a strategy and to understand how the algorithm thinks. I've subscribed and will definitely be watching your backlog! Second, as a consumer, I want to validate what you're saying regarding the importance of sharing valuable information in order to get customers. I am very wary of purchasing from people who do "teaser" content -- articles or videos that speak mostly in general terms but hint there is more for paying customers. Instead, I am quite happy to support creators who seem to be giving it all away for free. Most important, I feel I can trust someone who has given me enough material to prove they really DO know what they're talking about and that their primary concern is contributing to others' growth (and not getting me to spend $97 today, when the super low sale expires coincidentally on the same day I found them). I have paid for courses, private FB groups, coaching, books, etc., confident that I will receive the same high quality that I'm already used to from them. At the very least, if I'm not going to purchase, I like, subscribe, and recommend their products or services to others. And leave long, rambling comments like this to feed YT's algorithm! 😂
Wow, thank you so much! Yes, I'm truly a believer in "giving away the farm" as a solid content strategy. It's also really fulfilling knowing that you're helping people. Clients come to me whenever they're ready, and yes, I'm still able to pay the mortgage. :-)
Thanks for asking! The algorithm is always changing, but last I heard, it only applies if you've been away from posting for some time (let's say a few months). It'll take some consistent posting before you show up in more newsfeeds. But keep in mind that it's better to post consistently *good* content than just consistent content, so if you need to post a little less frequently -- maybe twice a week rather than 5 times a week -- go for it. I hope that helps!
Thanks, Brooke! Any idea if the LI algo has a preference for posts created directly on the platform vs scheduled/posted via a CRM integration (like Hubspot)?
Thanks for asking, Bill! My understanding is that LinkedIn prefers posts that are created directly on the platform. However, that's not always possible when you're trying to streamline your workflow and are posting to multiple social media sites (I use a third-party platform for this reason). That said, if you're just posting on LinkedIn, you can use LinkedIn's scheduling tool, so your workflow is somewhat streamlined and you're posting directly on LinkedIn.
Good stuff. Thanks for these tips. Not sure if I missed it in the video but where did you find out this info of what the LinkedIn algorithm likes? or is this just what you believe it likes? Thanks again.
Thanks for asking! I did several hours of research on what was being reported. A lot of info out there is contradictory, so I went with data that had more of a general consensus.
Love this video. I'm a content strategist for the small company I'm working for, a very new one and I'm still learning a lot. This is very helpful, but I want to know if this would these tips apply to all types of businesses? For example, the posting a selfie bit might not be possible for a company but for a personal brand, maybe. Would different things apply to a company? Thanks a lot.
Thanks for asking! Selfies might not apply for a post coming from a company page, but just remember that posts from personal pages are significantly more favored by the algorithm. It would behoove a company to have someone or a few people on their team post on their personal pages and represent the brand that way.
In your video, it's mentioned that we should post once every 24 hours. Does this only reflect our original posts? How do reposts from others influence this if at all?
That's a really good question, Jen, and I don't have a perfect answer for that. Personally, I don't count reposts in the 24-hour period. Also please understand that 24 hours is a guideline. If it's easier to create 3 quality posts a week than 7 posts a week (which might not be as high quality), then go for the 3. :-)
Thanks for asking! There isn’t a straightforward answer to by this. Check out my video from last June entitled “The Best (Surprising!) Times to Post on LinkedIn”. You’ll see what I mean. 🙂
