  • Super fun episode this week as the crew goes on a little fishing trip, but when they get back they find the girls have blocked their toilet! Badly!
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

DJI drones use ground pointing camera for station keeping, if drone can't see the ground (or sea in this case) then it uses GPS for it. And if there is any wind, it start to fly in orbit size of GPS resolution.

As per Jaime: 20 good pumps, followed by an additional 2 more pumps; just to be sure she's completely open & ready for business. I just realised, the proper use of Parlay's head, is uncannily similar to my ex-girlfriend ~ who also required multiple people, solidly pumping her, to insure proper functioning and obviously, preventing her pipe from backing up. Cheers from Western OZ 🇦🇺 .

I'd love to hear from Colin with an in depth engineer's explanation of how the vacuum heads work, and how you store, treat, and/or discharge waste

    • @SuperDirk1965
      @SuperDirk1965 ปีที่แล้ว

These are not vacuum heads, just ordinary pump toilets. Waste is usually discharged overboard at sea. In inland waters, some boats have a holding tank which can be emptied at a shore discharge station (or overboard once far enough out to sea.

Fun episode. When my daughters break something, I've found that it's best to have them fix it or at the very least go through the steps. It cuts down on the number of times Daddy has to fix things. The wife..... well, lets just say I'm used to fixing the same thing repeatedly.

Over the years, the waste lines on boat toilets get a calcium plaque like build up that reduces the diameter of the pipe causing more and more back ups and clogs as time goes by. There's things you can do to dissolve the calcium. If you leave it, you'll eventually get a blow out between the toilet and the holding tank.

    • @imchris5000

We had a bum gun only rule on our charter cat(we were in Asia so that's kinda normal) and an electric head makes it more simple for people. there's a conversion kit you can buy had the occasional blockage when someone decided a tampon would go well down there. Electric toilets suck a bit of current so we run dual 4mm to it, they work great

We do the no paper rule mostly and yes it is gross...and always close the lid. you never know what will fall in

Colin, my wife and I have a composting head on our boat. We use paper bags for the toilet paper and there’s absolutely no smell or nastiness at all. I was surprised when I moved aboard as this is our first sailboat and first time living aboard but the nature’s head composting toilet is simple and doesn’t smell if the compost is changed every 3 weeks. The paper bag never smells

Dang, Jamie is the most jovial guy even through the head cleaning process. My only experience with marine heads was on our day use boat, where there is a head, but only used for extreme emergencies. Otherwise jump in the water. But last June we sailed 10 days on a Lagoon 450. Rules were, no toilet paper in head because I’m not spending my BVI dream cleaning heads. Of coarse I also made a rule, no fresh water showers than one per day. Salt Water on the stern and a fresh water rinse only. Somehow the crew didn’t listen well, and we made two fresh water refills at 50 cents a gallon for fresh water in BVI. We used more water than diesel. That’s what I get for taking a crew of non- sailors.

Boat life & RV life....both have septic rules!
My bud had just purchase a brand new 40' Toy Hauler, first trip out his daughter plugged up the black tank!
Had to bring it in and DROP the tank, found women's sanitary products in there. Needless to say he was not a happy "camper" LOL!
Mind you this is his third RV and his daughter, who is in her mid 20's, KNOWS that you cannot do this to dispose into the waste basket!
Have a few friends who also own boats and waste paper is ok if used in small amounts.
Hopefully a lesson learned by the ladies.

I have a jabsco and do not put toilet paper down it. Always amazes me that my rather large vegetarian offerings fit down it. However my 11 year old boy can clog it straight away, come to think of it he must have some kind of special but unhelpful gift as he can clog any toilet on sea land or air…
I have tried to make the pipe on my toilet as short and straight as possible, but as others have said, why they use such small elbows on these toilets I will never understand.

Install a macerater and that should help quite a bit.

@15:07 We just keep a pet rabbit on board. His name is Charmin Ultra. He's also the "head" mechanic.

Wonder if Parlay used the toilet paper designed for sewers and not the type designed for septic systems.. When I moved out into a rural setting, I learned the difference the hard way. The paper used for septic systems is much thinner and will dissolve easier in water.

If it doesn't come out of you it doesn't go down the toilet, on SV Makani Kia. The paper in the bin isn't that big a deal.

Agree - nowhere near as nasty and difficult as having a head out of action, dismantling it, digging out crap and letting it loose on the floor!
