How to PROPERLY TENSION YOUR RIGGING on a catamaran - Episode 142

  • In this episode we get a professional rigger and surveyor to guide us through the process of tensioning our rig after repairing the broken bulkheads on our Lagoon 450 catamaran. He advises us that the worst possible thing to do on a catamaran is to over tension the rig, as the results are catastrophic, as we have seen many times before on other multihulls, and may even have contributed slightly towards the failure of our bulkheads, however seeing as hundreds of other lagoon 450's have broken bulkheads, it appears that the underlying issue is deeper than just the rigging...
If you would like to reach out to Mike, his email address is marinescene.marina@gmail.com
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

I was on a boat where the front half and the back half were build in a different shipyard. They were brought together on the water, drifted together and welded while floating. Then the complete boat was placed in a dry dock. When the water was pumped out the bow was more than a meter above the dock blocks. To cover up that bending of the boat they made a cut through the bow above the bulb and lowered it on the blocks. Then thy closed the gap. Later they did find out that the boat originally was perfect straight but the dry dock was curved... I only can congratulate you on the superb quality you have reached. That rigger is super. The praise he gave on your work was the confirmation on what was clear. You did it right!

  • @svechappe6075
    @svechappe6075 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

That's the way I learned to tune my rig on my first boat, a Prindle 16 cat, by feel. Because the rig had to come down at the end of each sailing day in order to trailer home, I got lots of practice. Tighten the shrouds but leave a minor amount of slack. With mainsail hoisted, put wind pressure on the beam and take 50% of the slack out of the downwind shrouds. The flip the boat around and do the same thing with the other side. Repeat the process as you incrementally take less and less slack out on each side in sequence until the slack is gone, but only put enough tension in to keep the upwind shroud from pumping under load. Same principle applies to monohulls, but there's less risk over bending the boat due to over-tightening and you want a bit more tension at rest because of the shrouds being more vertical.

Bare in mind that in heavy seas, in strong wind, that tension will be much higher. You need to give the hull-rigging combination being able to cope with that.

When I tune I start by making sure top of mast is centered over the boat and that all threads on turnbuckles are lubed. Then as I tighten I count turns so that each side gets equally tightened and mast stays centered and straight. Then at some point when the rig is nearly as tight as it needs to be , I measure the distance each turnbuckle is open with a precision caliper and record this as a base number. Then any future tuning is done by comparing the new tune to base tune. I also use a gauge, but don't rely on it . If ever confused just go back to base and start over. Tensions on halyards, boom weights etc screw with the gauge. Measurements are best to use for repatabilty. Then you go sailing and do it again a few more times, this time recording headstay sag and heel of boat. Ok a bit much but recording what you do is a big help. Also you want to look at mast and sheet leads and determine the look the exact same on opposite tacks in stead the wind

    • @Bd1ddy1

Yeah, a gage or measurement is a necessity. I would never tune my rig on "Instinct" . What horrible advice this guy is giving.

That’s very similar to how we tension ours. Tighten the leeward side just enough to hold it taut. I have set it up and gauge-tested it so I know a good starting point by gauge. Geminis have been broken by riggers using monohull tension (20% of breaking strength) because of the relatively light build and leverage due to beam. I feel much better about my methods having seen this, so thanks!!!

Once you're done with the fine tuning of the rig tension, I estimate you will see about 10-12 mm gap between the straight line and bridge deck (in the middle). Fine tune with full sails up in winds around 4-5 Bft at the most. Keep tacking until you have it right (as instructed by the rigger). A little bow in the forestay is not uncommon. The sailmaker should have accounted for that. Note that with stronger winds you'll probably reduce sail area, and with that the pressure on the rig. With reduced sails in stronger winds, the tension (and slack in downwind rig) should be about the same. As soon you have some heavy weather on your next trip, go below and check your bulkheads, doors, and anything else for movement. Use eyes, ears and your hands on the surfaces to "feel" the boat. Now, of you go! Looking forward to the next adventures. Safe sailing to all of you.

Colin your the man! I’ve watched you for close to two years now and I couldn’t be happier for you! I just wish Jamie were with you to enjoy the “fruits” of his labor too. I’m sure he’ll at least be back to visit. You all are the best!

So happy to see that rigger confirm … it’s not rocket science, and listen to your boat. The one time I hired a rigger, he way over tightened. I listened to my gut and gave them more slack. SAIL!

Having Mike come out and give his philosophy on Rigging was perfect. It isn't this huge mystery and no one should be afraid of it! Get the mast straight and in column, and set the rake angle only with light tension... then sail it. Judge the tension by the LEEWARD shrouds. Perfect. I do synthetic rigging and I never use Loos Gauges, Dyneema can be very tight while never feeling as tight as wire does. The rule for any type of rigging, They Aren't Piano Wires!

AMAZING!!! (then they ask for a beer!!! much more amazing!!!) CONGRAAAAATS!!!

Colin, you have done so much for people. I know you feel that you were just doing what you needed to do for your own boat. But by sharing all that you have done, staying true to your principles, weathering all the hate and negativity that you received, you have brought to light a serious issue that could be saving some lives. Your hard work and dedication is to be commended. You, good sir, have changed the world. Even if you feel it is only in some small part, you are a hero.

o gosh, watching her under sail made my eyes leak. i watch you and leo every sunday from my desk in frozen montana, tally ho getting her whiskey plank and watching parley stretch her wings brought tears of joy and wonderment. and for jamey wherever you are, look what you and colin did. omg you made this pandemic, isolation and winters home in the frozen north slightly more bearable. massive respect and love.

Missed your intro monologue. I think it is one of the best intros on TH-cam. Let’s us know who you are as a person from the first minute. I look at the decisions I make and asked myself will I regret my decision. This is a question I did not really ask myself before watching your channel. I understand you are trying to improve production quality but please do not lose the best thing you have going: you.

I may not be there with you and giving my help. But I am a little bit emotional right now that you have taken a twice broken boat and made it into a MODEL of an excellent sailing vessel. My heart is in the ocean but my past won't let me sail anymore. My heart is there on THAT VESSEL. ☺☺☺👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I reckon this is the #1 key test so far showing that your hard work and dedication has 100% paid off. You could argue that prudence would involve continued assessment of repaired areas for cracks and the deflection test, to truly be sure. But if you'd cocked it up badly it'd be showing already, big static forces at play and even in a light sail. Top marks Colin n Co. Proud you're a Kiwi.

There’s an eyelet at the base of the crescent wrench’s handle suitable for threading a lanyard through, put other end of lanyard on a carabiner and attach to railing -might save watching it sink some day. Just a thought.

A sail when up and catching wind has always looked like an enormous "billboard" to me. Can't believe companies aren't lined up to capture that advertising space especially on Parlay with its large viewership and loyal following? I'd be selling it to the highest bidder and having some incredible looking and performing sails! Good job Colin and Team Parlay, every video gets us all closer to sailing the world with you.

A true craftsman is one who knows their job so well they can break down their knowledge into simple terms than anyone can understand and put into practice. Well done on all the work you put into engineering and carrying out the repairs to your boat. The absolute best of luck in all your future travels! Cheers!

I don't know anything about boats but have been watching this channel for a while and enjoy it a lot. When the boat was pulled out and set on the stands , the amount of tension that had to be released on the rigging to let the sponsions relax to near plumb again was an immediate factor that I noticed and at that time surmised that is what broke the boat.
