Thank SilverStreak for watching and commenting.
It is only an idea and what I did and or do.
      Again check with the manufacturer.
      Have a great day.
      Take care, Ed.

Ed I think that's going to be one good running motor, I saw alot of guys back in the day give the 400 a bad rap due to them running hot when they changed the heads and put a head on without steam holes in it, nice work as always 👍

      Thank you Terry.
      I appreciate your watching.
      400 Chevys are good.
Dart, World Products and GM Bowtie and others copied Chevys idea.
Chevy never made a Performance version and they sure should have.
It was the small time guys and Shops that get the credit for this great little engine.
Guys like you working in their shops at home and Races on Friday and Saturday nights.
The cooling problems were old wives tales.
They need a high performance water pump to pump high pressure, like the Howard Stewart or Edelbrock.
To keep the steam pockets purged.
The Big bore is a plus, cause the valves are unshrouded..
Heads breath better. Free horse power.
      But what do I know.
      Thanks again.
      Take care, Ed.

Great work. Better you than me. I would be way too nervous to drill in the new heads like that.

      Hey John, thanks for watching.
Better to do in a machine than by hand.
      That helps.
      Nothing can move.
Nervous, yes can make you feel cautious.
      Hehe.
      Take care, Ed.

Great video Ed. My question for is do you think steam holes are actually needed? I know it is a good idea. I have ran two 400sbc one with camel hump heads and one with vortech heads both did not have steam holes drilled. I was always under the idea that if you don't idle for long periods of time they are not needed but I guess the factory would not of put them in a 400 if there was no reason for them. I am not a chevy guy but I have always said the best bang for your buck is a 400 short block with no more than a .480 lift cam and a set of vortech heads. Great motor for the money.

Hey Nolan, ok they say you do not have to drill.
      Edelbrock drills the outside only.
I put a wire and a pick with a 90° on the end.
And probed, I decided to drill the outside ones.
Engines that do not idle and above 2,000RPM really do not need it.
It is mainly for idling and cast iron heads.
Also very important, use a Howard Stewart or Edelbrock high flow water pump to keep the static water pump pressure up.
      It is important.
So Race cars, probably not necessary.
      Take care, Ed.
