Thank you so much for putting this setup guide together. I just received the A1 last week and although I’m an experienced Alpha shooter, I found this tutorial to be extremely helpful in navigating the new camera! I’m gonna share this video with anyone I know that just bought the camera! Well done sir! Thank you!
The Clear Image Zoom feature mentioned at 1:13:24 only works if the file format is set to JPG, not Raw or HEIF for stills. The feature also works in video mode, which Mark was discussing. It would be nice if the Recall Custom Hold allowed you to select Clear Image Zoom and change the file format to JPG. That way you could have the camera set to Raw file format, but use the Recall Custom Hold to zoom and change the file format to JPG on the fly. Just link the Recall Custom Hold to a shortcut button and off you go. Even better if they allow you to use HEIF rather than JPG.
I've been with Nikon cameras for nearly 10 years, and have been doing bird photography for nearly one and half years, for me Sony A1 is really awesome and considering switching to A1 soon.
Absolutely astonishingly fantastic video! OMG! Every camera manufacture should create a video for each of their models just like this. This is invaluable to being able to enjoy your Camera immediately, especially for new users who may be a little intimidated.
Thanks Mark!! Just got my Alpha 1 and I am binging on your videos - SO Good , I have had an A7sIII for about a year and learning a lot about hat camera too - Thank so much subbed and hit that like button!
Mark, thank you so much for this setup video for alpha1. Quite a few things have changed from earlier Sony Alpha models. I look forward to downloading your settings to set up my camera which is supposed to arrive later this week. I am shocked that Sony doesn't support your work more, you deliver so much more value than the high profile internet influencer photography reviewers.
Thanks Mark just spent two days setting mine up for birds in flight ! I will now compare your Sony ambassador settings with mine keeping my fingers crossed I got it right ! Having said that there must be a million different ways to set this camera. Thanks for the full pro run through even if it was three days late for me! I certainly appreciate all the work you put in having just gone through the process myself. Thanks for all the work you do. I hope Sony appreciate you ! 👍😍
You may find one or two things of interest - such as the fact that you can’t place the faster frame rate in the recall memories - so you have to remember to switch the frame rate back to standard if you want to enjoy the super high resolution finder when photographing static subjects.
@@MrRiffbear1 I start at 1/2000th Sec wide open whatever lens on F4 - 6.3 600mm or 200-600mm. Depending on background Auto ISO . Solid similar background manual ISO ! I use Zone focus but I know people who use Wide and still pick up the Bird in flight every time !! Amazing camera !
@@CamillaI that’s great! Is it even possible to save those settings to a numbered dial and increase or decrease settings if need be? I’m assuming you’re setting for this purpose is M?
Wish you would have specified to set the camera to aperture priority 1st and make your changes there then save it to 1, 2 or 3 before you can actually use those setups because there isn’t a shoot mode in the menu and for some1 new to Sony I google shoot mode and apparently there was a shoot mode in a menu at some point in time I’ve spent almost 2 days trying to figure this out I feel like a idiot until I found a forum of other idiots and a genius who figured it out 🤣🙏🏻 thank you for some1 totally new to shooting professionally watching you break this all down makes my heart smile 🤣🙏🏻 thank you once again

Hi Mark - would just like to thank you for such an in-depth and intuitive video. I've been shooting with a Sony a6000 (my first camera) for the past 3 years and finally decided to upgrade as my gear was limiting me (and walking around with the Sony G 100-400mm on the a6000 just looks a little too funky). To say I was a wee bit overwhelmed by the massive jump to Sony a1 after the a6000 is a bit of an understatement but your video has cleared up a lot for me so thank you!
Can you explain a little more about the Tracking In + AF On setting? Is this the same as back button focus? Do you use BBF? Just a little confused about this part. Thanks so much!
It’s not strictly Back Button AF if you don’t remove AF from the shutter release. My Back Button AF video (the second of two I have published) explains my position on BBAF.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills thank you. Watched the video a couple times. So for the a1, would you put the Tracking On +AF On Setting instead of a focus hold button? Or would you still put a focus hold button on your lens? Just trying to figure out best way!
Very informative video from you again, and as always. I am taking the step from the Riii tomorrow to the A1 and will download both the e-book and settings. I will also revert to the 1,2 and 3 settings sections in this video again. :-)
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thank you Mark. All your videos have always been extremely helpful and I’m glad to have subscribed to the premium membership on your Patreon site.
As shown in 17:13 min of this video-when the focus area is on the body of the bird and eye focus is on and is on the eye- what will the focus be on -the bird body or the eye ? Is it necessary to have the focus area as illustrated by the square to be on the area around the eye too ?
Mark Hi - Great content but I'm confused. You screenshot of the menu @ 21:50 doesn't match mine. Eg on Shooting for 6 I have Shutter/Silent or are the numbers for something completely different? And I have /51 not /55??? Thanks, Ivan

Hi Mark, I love your description of 'Silent Mode', but why does my A7iii when I have 100-400 or 24-105 attached, suddenly click loudly maybe 1 or 2 seconds after turning off? I don't remember this when I first bought it. Sounds like the shutter closing. I generally use e-shutter unless I have flash.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Hi Mark, I"ve been using this beautiful camera for a day now, but I can't see my "recall custom hold" settings in the custom button section. I've noticed there are only 51 menu items on the camera whereas yours seems to have 55 is that the problem? cheers and thanks. Thanks a lot for the great guidance. I followed your advice only adjusting a couple of smaller things along the way for my own needs. Since you did not mention DMF setup in this video and your video specifically on DMF focus assist setup from 2018 looks different on the A1 now: Is there a way to change the "initial focus magnification" on the A1? By default it's only 4.2x and you can only choose between 1x and 4.2x. Further magnification is available by activating the middle round button of the right side wheel after having activated the DMF manual override by turning the lense focus ring but this always requires pressing that additional button while keeping the shutter half-pressed. Since I personally use DMF extensively being able to increase initial magnification would make my life much easier. It's the only way often times to achieve critical focus on close subjects using large apertures.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I played around with the camera more and it seems they changed that from older Sony cameras. The 4.2x factor can not be changed, but it's possible to assign the function "focus magnifier" to a custom key which allows to switch between 1x, 4.2x and 8.4x (the latter which is more than sufficient for delicate fine tuning of focus) when using DMF. When not using backbutton AF this needs to be combined in conjunction with focus hold on another custom button though, otherwise the shutter press will result in refocus obviously.
Thanks for that. Graet video. Do the A1 support 4k 25p in the HS codec? The A7s iii and the A7 iv do only support 50p and 100p in HS, only 25p in S and All-I. Missing 25p in HS for some odd reason.
Mark, this was such an invaluable video, thank you so much for putting it together. I had a couple of questions that I'm hoping you'll have time to answer. 1) I've been trying to assign the " Priority Set AF-C " to either a custom button or the FN Menu, but can't seem to find a way to do that. Is it possible, or do I need to use a custom menu instead ? 2) Do you favor the Electronic Shutter. the Mechanical Shutter, or Auto ? 3) What are the differences between Touch Tracking and Touch Focus ? 4) Would you recommend using the in camera noise reduction, or leave it off, and adjust in post ? Thank you again !

Mark, what body produces better fine detail at 200-300% crop? A7riv or A1? Also does the 200-600mm perform better on the a1 than the a7riv as far as image quality?
Hi Mark, thanks for all your hard work! I've just bought an A1 for studio use with Profoto flash. I have found - unless I'm doing something wrong that is - that using electronic shutter the A1 does not fire the centre pin of the hot shoe, using the mechanical shutter it does fir the centre pin. However it does fire the lights with a dedicated Profoto Sony trigger. Do you find this to be correct? Many thanks!
Mark, you’re not suggesting a recall custom hold button for DMF anymore or for the A1? Curious if something about the A1 impacts the use of that technique.
The A9 and A1 camera don't support focus peaking when DMF is assigned to a custom key. I have also found the AF to be much more reliable these days and also want the custom key for Recall Custom Hold memories. I outline my current shooting workflows in great detail on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel.
Hi Mark, great content thank you. Does anyone know if an external monitor can be used via HDMI from the A1, WITHOUT the A1 switching off its internal display when recording? I’ve got the A7SIII and it’s such an improvement over the A7iii in terms of monitor both the cameras display and an external Small HD monitor when shooting.
Thanks for the great video, Mark! I noticed that the menu item numbers (Format 8/55, for example) on my new A1 aren't the same as yours. Took me a while to figure it out, but it seems that the numbers change based on how many My Menu pages you have set up.
That’s correct -you need to add four pages to the MyMenu to match mine. MyMenu used to be the last menu so if it had stayed this way it wouldn’t have put the Sony menu pages out of sequence.

Awesome video. Thanks so much for putting this together. When/where do you expect your camera settings to be available as a download? I am switching from Nikon to Sony, and I receive my new camera day after tomorrow. I would love to be able to start with your settings as I figure out what works best for me on this new camera. Thanks again.
Very helpful. Thank you. Quick question about ISO auto Min SS. I have set this to 2000 yet the camera is still selecting shutter speed much lower than this. Any idea why?
I suspect you are testing this indoors. This is a sports/action setting for daylight. If the ISO has reached the maximum you have set in the ISO Auto Range and you are using your maximum aperture then ISO Auto Min Shutter Speed is forced to use shutter speeds slower than the minimum you have set in order to obtain an appropriate exposure.
Thank you mark, your tutorial is very helpful for me. I watched it even before I got the A1. I have an interesting question want to ask you: I found that my A1 electronic shutter mimic sound is different than the sound of A9II. I also found out that some other A1 have the same electronic shutter sound as A9II, they said the sound can be set. But I never find a place in the manu that can change the sound type. The "Sound" tab doesn't make any change to the sound type. I bet you know the way, right? Thank you again for your time.
Are you sure you are not confusing the mechanical shutter sound with the electronic shutter sound? The mechanical shutter sounds different to the A9 cameras but the electronic shutter sounds the same.
It’s all about managing contrast and a subject brightness range that may be too high if no profile was applied. The S-Log profiles can prove to be problematic to edit for those inexperienced at using LUTs and who are capturing 8-bit video files. PP6 may lower the contrast enough but the HLG PP may be needed if highlights are still being clipped. Using the Zebras feature will alert the user to potential problems.
Thanks for another great video. I always look for your take on any gear I'm thinking of getting. I am seriously considering the purchase of an A1, mostly for the 30fps feature to be able to take action photos of cyclists. You have an example of the great eye focusing capability of the A1 of a woman cycling, however, the model was not wearing sunglasses of any kind, so my question is whether you tried taking cycling photos where the cyclists do have sunglasses on? I'm assuming the eye grab technology would not work, and that it is a scenario where the photographer would have to rely on tagging the cyclist as close to the face as they can and rely on the camera to simply follow an object. Thanks again for creating a treasure-trove of information based on real-life experience and usage.

Looked through your many offerings and have 2 question: 1. After receiving my a1 I cobble up some sports (camset01) and bif (camset02) and and saved to my mac so I could download your workflow with success. I was not prepared for the depth of your settings and decided I needed to learn more while finishing up my smaller versions. So I successfully loaded the bif file and have been adding to it. Before I can add the new file version I need to save my bif file. Can't save to camset02, or overwrite or new file create camset03. Help? 2. I shoot mainly bif on Nikon d6 using auto iso, bbf while setting f/stop and shutter speed with the help of real time iso before I shoot. Where is that metric? I see it on photos but not in the viewfinder prior to shooting. Help#2. Thanks for your support.
If you load a CAMSET file from a computer to a memory card it prevents any future CAMSET files being saved to the card from the camera until card is formatted.

Hello Mark, thanks a lot for your videos that are very useful for me. I particularly appreciated the PAL settings which I find very effective. As you wear glasses like me, I have a question regarding my new alpha 1. I have a problem with the lcd / viewfinder switch. On very specific conditions the lcd doesn't switch to the viewfinder and I can't manually force it. These conditions are the following : very bright sunlight not in front or me nor in the back but more at a 90° angle. I tried to clean the proximity sensor and I bought a bigger eyecup with no effect. I think the problem is due to a ray of light bumping into the proximity sensor. Since i have glasses, the inside of the eyecup is not fully dark. I think that is the problem. I never experienced this problem with my alpha 7 riv but the proximity sensor was above the viewfinder. I missed a copple of birds in flight due to this problem. Did you experience this issue with your alpha 1 ? Many thanks!
I experienced this also but didn't know if it was the sensitivity of my pre-release camera. With the sun low and hitting the eye sensor I had to place my thumb over the sensor and keep it there until I changed positions. A firmware upgrade may resolve this and I have also noticed someone selling bigger eyecups on eBay. Normally I would provide feedback to Sony but I didn't get the camera until after the announcement so Sony lost this opportunity from someone who shoots sports out on location rather than their pet dog and pot plants in their living room.
Thank you Mark for your feedback. It helps to see I am not the only one having this issue. I recently discovered your channel and what i like a lot with your videos is that you're a real photographer who tests cameras and gives advices following real experiences on the field. That is very valuable for me. Concerning this viewfinder issue i bought a bigger eyecup which covers more the proximity sensor as you advised (thanks again for that). It seems to reduce the problem but unfortunately I am still experiencing it. Then I tried to put 2 small strips of black electric tape on each side of the proximity sensor (leaving only the center free) to change the sensitivity. Again it helps but I couldn't get rid of the problem and it still happens from time to time. It is annoying not to be able to 100% rely on the viewfinder.
Mark, your video shows 55 pages of menu items but I only have 51. I looked for a firmware update for the a1, but can’t find any. At 28:20 the left menu page shows 51. How do I get to 55?
Hey Mark, thank you for these great videos! Have you uploaded the camset to this yet? I’m going to set my A1 by hand but would be useful to have yours as a backup just in case. I wonder if you could demo some of the flash features at some point - I’ve not seen the end image preview and such like before. Many thanks as always

Hi mark, thanks for everything. I am Brazilian and I have an A9. I like to photograph and film birds and butterflies (Morpho family) in flight. With the A9 it is possible to record videos of butterflies in flight, I do this frequently. I'm thinking of getting an A1 ... my question is on the new A1 camera has the Af tracking during movie recording been improved? For example to follow fast objects like a butterfly in flight ... thank you!
I am primarily a stills shooter and I was keen for the A1 to match the A9 and A9II AF performance. I am not sure I would say it is better, but it seems no worse. For movie capture I would recommend looking for someone who tested the AF performance when capturing movies.
If I need to select the custom slot AND change Fn settings AND turn a dial for AF mode AND turn another dial for burstmode - yes, it‘s a way - but complicated. Would be much more convenient if the custom slot could store everything.

Mark i have question , i am used to shooting BIF with Manual controls M. Now i am seeing you are using A mode with iSO SS lock at 2000 . If you have to move into panning or different shutter speed are you using the recall custom Hold 1 on the lens...
I have ISO Auto Min SS assigned to C1 and can drop the shutter speed in 2 seconds with the finder at my eye or I can use one of my Recall Custom Hold settings. I sometimes use manual when the background behind the bird is changing from bright sky to dark foliage very quickly. I outline all of these options in my 500-page eBook available from Patreon.com/markgaler
@@AlphaCreativeSkills thanks Mark. Just finished the video, and I’m glad I watched it. Learned a lot more. One question: I’m not too happy with the fact that both drive mode and focus mode are physical dials only, and you can’t save them to the memory recall, or assign them to the function menu or custom key. I found that when it’s dark outside finding the right drive mode isn’t easy. What’s your experience?
How’s it going Mark! I preordered my A1 the other day and watching your video to familiarize myself with it before it arrives. As for the Anti-dust Function, is it recommended to have this on / use this feature? I’ve heard from others that they rather have it off than get dust on / damage the shutter.
The shutter will help to prevent dust falling on the sensor but photographers are warned that the shutter is a delicate an expensive component of the camera that must not be touched or allowed to get hot with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. I use this feature but would not recommend it to photographers who think they are clumsy when changing lenses.

Hi Mark ... I just watched your video, "Sony A1 Camera Review- Fake News & Bad Reviews". In it, you mention some issues with the A1 and Sony 200-600 mm lens (similar to what many a7R4 users talk about). Have you tested the A1 any further with the 200-600 lens, and if so, has your opinion changed? I'm considering purchasing the A1, but since Sony 200-600 is the lens I shoot birds with, I'm a bit hesitant. Any thoughts? Thanks for all your work and support!
I have tested it further and I am happy with the union - I offer ongoing support and guidance on my Patreon site for this type of ongoing info: www.patreon.com/markgaler
Mark, is there a way to set up the A1 to avoid banding when using high speed flash sync? I have been testing mine at 1/8000 (and other very fast shutter speeds) using the mechanical shutter and a Sony HVL-F60RM speedlight. I get very noticeable banding with this setup. On my A7R4 and A7III bodies I can turn off the e-Front Curtain Shutter and that completely solves this issue, but I can't find a setting that works with the A1. Thank you, you are and have long been my GO-TO GUY for reliable Sony info, unlike so many clickbait merchants on this platform. Cheers!
My pre-production unit was returned to Sony after this brief review. I didn’t get a chance to test HSS. I plan further testing when Sony send me a production unit
Understood. My testing thus far has been with the Sony speedlight and a Flashpoint/Godox AD200 off-camera strobe. The speedlight is clean up to 1/1000 and the strobe up to 1/2000. I tried anti-flicker mode in the camera (even though it's designed for continuous sources) and couldn't see any difference. I'll be interested to see if you discover a workaround. Thanks!

Wow, thank you! Check out my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel for additional support
Thanks Mark!! Just got my Alpha 1 and I am binging on your videos - SO Good , I have had an A7sIII for about a year and learning a lot about hat camera too - Thank so much subbed and hit that like button!
Thanks, I don't have an A1, just an A7iii.... But I always learn something from you.
I just pulled the trigger and got the A1. You were the first stop after opening the box. Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Oh how i wish i were coming here to setup my a1. It’s too expensive for me, but i can still appreciate a fine camera :)
How have you got your BIF set please?

Thanks for the positive feedback Molly :-)
Thanks a million. I was waiting for this one. Now, waiting for my A1 to arrive.
Top notch tutorial, as always. The A1 is super impressive.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills great. I’ll go watch those!!
@@AlphaCreativeSkills thank you. Watched the video a couple times. So for the a1, would you put the Tracking On +AF On Setting instead of a focus hold button? Or would you still put a focus hold button on your lens? Just trying to figure out best way!

I think this is normal behavior. My a7R3 does the same thing. Has done it since I got it (a couple years ago)
It is Pixel Mapping periodically to look for warm pixels. It is part of the camera’s general self maintenance program.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills thank you sir appreciate the prompt response.
I am not aware of a way to increase the initial magnification beyond 4.2
The A1 has the same video options as the A7SIII but just with the addition of the 8K options.
Thank you again !

honestly if you don't know the difference between touch to track and touch focus, then you probably shouldn't be using this camera.
Mark, what body produces better fine detail at 200-300% crop? A7riv or A1? Also does the 200-600mm perform better on the a1 than the a7riv as far as image quality?
Better detail A7RlV at low ISO and A1 at high ISO but the differences at low ISO are quite close. 200-600 has better AF tracking in the A1
Hi Mark, thanks for all your hard work!
Amazing...Thank You for all that you share.
🙏this is really helpful for me to understand more about my a1 ,thank you for this amazing info.
Glad it was helpful!
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Awesome, will check out your Patreon content, thanks!

@@AlphaCreativeSkills thank you. Appreciate your reply.
Thank you ! I am mostly shooting video and been wondering what are the best picture profile settings, you have recommended PP 11?
It’s all about managing contrast and a subject brightness range that may be too high if no profile was applied. The S-Log profiles can prove to be problematic to edit for those inexperienced at using LUTs and who are capturing 8-bit video files. PP6 may lower the contrast enough but the HLG PP may be needed if highlights are still being clipped. Using the Zebras feature will alert the user to potential problems.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills thank you for your quick answer. Are there any tutorials that you have done regarding that topic. Thanks a lot, Anja

Check out my review of the FE 50mm F1.2 where some of the cyclists are wearing sunglasses.

When you half-press the shutter the ISO Auto should momentarily change to the actual ISO being selected to take the photo.

Absolutely fantastic information! Thank you so much for sharing
Glad it was helpful!
Mark, your video shows 55 pages of menu items but I only have 51. I looked for a firmware update for the a1, but can’t find any. At 28:20 the left menu page shows 51. How do I get to 55?

Great Video!
But I can not store different finder refresh rates for c1,c2,c3.
I have the finder frame rate option in my Fn menu.
If I need to select the custom slot AND change Fn settings AND turn a dial for AF mode AND turn another dial for burstmode - yes, it‘s a way - but complicated.
Would be much more convenient if the custom slot could store everything.
Hi Mark, your new patreon fee is that one payment for life membership? Thanks
Its a monthly subscription service, but there are no contracts or commitments so you can join for just one month, download several eBooks, including a 600-page eBook for your camera, watch over 20 hours of video masterclass seminars, engage in some interactive post-production editing classes, check out the Raw files that accompany my lens and camera reviews and ask me some questions.
If I made this available for one lifetime payment I would be able to register myself as a charitable organisation. Sony don't pay me to offer this support, which is why the other 499 Sony Ambassadors don't do it.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills thanks 👍
Great video! Very helpful. I really like your saved settings strategy! Are your settings files for the a1 available to download as a starting point?
Yes they are available to my Premium Patrons - www.patreon.com/markgaler
Thanks Mark, I’ve setup my a1 already but definitely going to view this to fine tune!
Enjoy!
Hi Mark, I am not a Patreon because I limit the amount of platforms I use. I would love to support you for the time you've put in to figuring all of this out. I am also interested in your ebook and custom settings. Is there a way I can purchase these directly from you?
You can join- download the eBook and then unsubscribe. You can download all 15 eBooks for the $10.00 fee - you would only be charged an additional fee if you were still subscribed on the 1st August. I tried the 'donate-what-you-think-it-is-worth business' model but it didn't work out.
Downloaded the camset files, excellent thank you, dont know why my patreon logo isn't showimg?
The alpha logo appears for TH-cam members but they only get a fraction of the support available to Patrons
Superb videos and help thanks Mark
Happy to help
Amazing video
Thank you!
Thanks!
Are you using a Sony lens for these tests?
Yes, only one I've tried though is the 55/1.8. Could that be a factor? I have all the GM zooms and the 135 GM I could try as well.
