You went from a regular dude who's gonna show me how these go together, instantly changed gears when you uttered the phrase.. looking pretty slick there bud, to a special breed of Canadian, lol. Thx for your video, eh bud?
Windows won't install to an external drive but if you install windows while it's internally mounted, then remove it and put it in an enclosure it will work
I have exactly the same situation. I have similar enclosure and EVO 980. Now I want to apply heat pad for more heat safety. How can I do that with this enclosure. Should I apply heat pad to outside of enclosure or directly onto SSD inside enclosure ??? Please reply
This may sound like a silly questions in this day and age of cloud backups but i much prefer physical. Having moved to external SSD drives for PC, phone, consols etc. Now M.2 SSD seem to be in the in thing for backups and speed i wondered is it worth having M.2 SSDs for external storage? I understand they need a protocol dock and still plug in via USB options (pref C). Is there much to be gained from moving to this systems for physical backups? Trying to weight up practicality and cost.
Great question, actually! Anything with a motor is at risk of failure so yes it's absolutely worth it. Also less likely to be damaged in transport. I would add that you don't need a special dock unless you want full transfer speeds but if you intend to use as a steam library, for example, the faster the connection the better.
Hard to say, that will depend a lot on how much and how long you use it, which SSD is in the enclosure, etc. Many SSDs don't have cooling when in desktop use so probably fine especially if you're only hitting it briefly to transfer files on and off.
I don't understand why they design them to slide when you also want the thermal pad to stick to the enclosure. 5:20 does't seem like there is any contact at all. I suppose the pad just acts as a heat spreader.
I do not, you'll need to find the dimensions and compare to whichever one you buy online to see if they're compatible. If you buy from a site with a good return policy (like Amazon) you can also just buy and return if it doesn't fit. Best of luck!
Are there sny enclosures that allow ssd with heatsink attached to be used. Best Buy could not remove the heatsink so I need an enclosure that allows for the ssd with the heatsink attached
@CanadianComputerCollector I got it at microcenter all the boxes looked the same and didn't even have a manual or anything. Strangely it still works despite all that which is weird cause it looks like a screw could fit in that one spot. So it works my only question would be then - is the thermal paste necessary for transferring under a few hundred gb?
In same situation but need to do it cuz my NUC has issues with the current Kingston M2. Do I need 2 external encloseurs to clone one to the other? Also my computer doesnt even see that it is connected.
That depends on the software you use for cloning. It's also possible if the current drive is failing that cloning may not be a good solution if data is corrupted. Sorry I can't offer more insight than that, best of luck with the recovery!
Question: my SSD shit the bed and I had to get a new one, but I want to get the old files off of it. I don't have a second M.2 slot on my motherboard, so I was thinking about putting the old SSD in an enclosure like this and plugging it in via USB to get the files off of it. Will that work?
Can you use this adapter to use the SSD for gaming? As I have an old motherboard with no M.2 port and accidentally bought the same SSD as the one in the video rather than SATA.
Yes but you will be limited by usb transfer speeds. I used the nvme one in this video for Baldur's Gate 3 which I connected to my laptop's usb c port and it worked fine but it gets hot
my usb adapter does not recocnize the ssd ,, i cant see it .. dont know what to do the device manager says it is there but i cant find it with disk partner
its a m2 ssd maybe i shouldnt move it out? but i only have only 1 m2 slot so i thought i put one out for backup with the usb adapter XD and i buy one new for new install .. new install works and new m2 ssd works aswell on adapter aswell as on OS in my machine .. -.- and no it is no sata@@CanadianComputerCollector
I need serious help with this i got myself a yottomaster enclosure with a 1tb samsung now it is working but my issue is with saving in games i have gta v and for some reason i can't save in game i tried installing the rockstar social club in a folder and then insalling the game on the drive but it won't sync the cloud
@@CanadianComputerCollector There is an ad on the radio here in Australia, and it starts off with "Tools! Tools! Tools!" - my friend keeps turning to me and says, "Do you like it when they call your name repeatedly like that?"
I put my nvme WD Black on an external enclosure, USB 3.0 but it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting...😮😮😮. And the transfer rate is low, only 210MB/s. Since it's on a USB 3.0 should be 500MB/s.
So here's a question, talk to me like I'm retarded. If I just want a portable SSD external. I can het like the 4tb 990 pro and use the enclosure and just download all my games on it, and basically use it like an external hard drive just plug in and go?
Yes! I actually use the one in the grey enclosure for that very reason as my laptop didn't have 150gb of space for Baldur's Gate 3. Just make sure you use the fastest usb port possible on your PC for the best transfer speeds.
You went from a regular dude who's gonna show me how these go together, instantly changed gears when you uttered the phrase.. looking pretty slick there bud, to a special breed of Canadian, lol. Thx for your video, eh bud?
Anytime there bud
Thanks!! Exactly the info I was looking for!
I hate when tutorials ramble on so I tried to get straight to the point
@@CanadianComputerCollector Now if I can just find the little rubber plugs that came with the enclosure but seem to have wandered off…
Sweet you answered a question I had about using it this way to make a boot drive eh.

Still helping folks 9 months later. Thanks!
This kinda content is evergreen. Happy to have helped!
Really helpful, thanks heaps.
Anytime mate
I have exactly the same situation.
I have similar enclosure and EVO 980.
Now I want to apply heat pad for more heat safety.
How can I do that with this enclosure. Should I apply heat pad to outside of enclosure or directly onto SSD inside enclosure ???
Please reply
The heat pad needs to connect the SSD to the enclosure so it can transfer the heat.
very useful advice, just did this now!
Excellent!
Thanks for this video, I was too stupid to realise I had to click in the ssd into the enclosure ...
Not stupid at all! That's what tutorials are for :)
Another fine video!
Thanks, they're not the regular entertainment but I think there's value in making simple, straight to the point tutorials.

Much appreciated, happy to help!
Nice Solution Very Good
Having one of these around is really handy. Whether for cloning a drive or just for high speed external storage it is fantastic.
Is it really important to put a thermal pad? My old m.2 enclosure doesn't have one

A clamshell style enclosure would make way more sense it's true
Hello, do you know of any adapters that work with a Surface Pro 6 SSD? Thanks in advance!

Not that I'm aware of, sorry!
Hello is this enclosure good for gaming if I use samsung 970 evo nvme drive 2 tb / mattias
I've run bg3 off it but it does get hot
Mine didn't come with cables, the screw or thermal pads. I'm assuming it'll still work? Why else would it not have any of those things?
That sounds unusual. Perhaps return and reorder?

How to remove the heatsink as it won't fit in the enclosure with it attached
You'll need to look up the specific model of SSD you have to see how to do it

Just be sure to touch a metal radiator to earth any static electricity in your body before you touch the nvme ssd!
Or wear a grounding strap!
i have connected it , my pc sees it but does not recognise as a flash drive but rather an SSD , how do i open it as an ordinary ssd
You may need to format it. Hit up TH-cam for a tutorial on formatting USB drives, unfortunately that's not one I have a tutorial for. Best of luck!

Sorry mate you may want to hit up GTA forums for that
Did you cut open that package before the video started?
Nope! Only tool involved was my brother

It's a bit stupid how hardware engineers expect the a users to put the memory in ourselves. 🤷♂️
You can buy premade ones, but I appreciate these enclosures for letting us repurpose internal ones to be external
