    Thanks for your humor and wisdom! You helped me reset my sights on a less expensive bike, which now I'll have the wonderful opportunity to learn how to work on and get it ready for riding! 1983 Honda V45 Magna with 28k miles, $300. THIS WILL BE MY FIRST BIKE! So excited :)

      I don't understand how age, especially at the age of less than 60, anyone could be talking in terms of last bike. I'm 70, have 3 bikes, and there is no way in hell I'm thinking in terms of 'last motorcycle.' I'm sure that day will come, but I'm not there yet. I've still got trikes as an option and when that time comes you can bet I'll be going down that road, and I'm pretty sure my first trike won't be my last. I also imagine that even once I've gotten a trike I'll still have a two-wheeler or two - just a lot smaller ones.

      @jordan999fire 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are a responsible adult, I promise that you will be fine on a bigger bike if you have at least some experience. At least on a cruiser, I can't say anything for sports or standards. My first bike was a Kawasaki Eliminator which literally only had a 125cc engine. My next bike was a 1200 Sportster Custom. So a big jump. Other than getting used to the much heavier bike, which took about 3 20 minute rides, and the fact I could go faster than 58 mph, it wasn't that much different. As long as you aren't full throttle everywhere than you are fine. Just have some sense and be safe.

      It does seem logical at first until you realize that it's not the small bikes that are underpowered. It's the big bikes that are overpowered.
      I ride a 2019 Shadow 750, a slow "underpowered" bike. I easily get up to speed and keep up with traffic. I can't zoom past cars at insane speeds, but it's fast enough.

    I have to take issue with number 1.
    I went 26 years owning motorcycles and no cars whatsoever in California and Arizona.
    I usually paid about a grand for something off of Craigslist, fixed it up myself, often did some modifications along the cafe line and paid as little as 98 bucks a year for liability only insurance.
    This was an incredibly frugal way to get around.

    You are absolutely correct. I did everything you said when I bought my bikes. First, I bought a 1998 Kawasaki Vulcan 750, small enough so I could pass the DMV test. For insurance I went with Progressive, my auto insurance wanted twice the price. I traded in for a 1999 Kawasaki Voyager XII, a touring bike which I used for commuting for nine years and put 58K miles on it. When it broke down I bought a retro cruiser, a 2016 Triumph America LT, the most beautiful of its kind. And when I found out that a BMW R nine T Pure is so cheap (on TH-cam), I bought it from San Jose BMW. I flew up there and rode it 375 mile down to Los Angeles. (The local dealer didn't have the color and the wheels I wanted.) Now I have all the bikes (toys) I need, a touring bike (I had it fixed), a cruiser and a beautiful sports bike. I'll die happy!

    Returning to biking at 68 after a 30 year gap, knowing that it will probably be my last bike, I wanted something affordable that would do motorway (highway) speeds rather than something that would out-accelerate everyone else.
    I settled for a kawasaki scooter, the j300, and enjoy it even in wet&windy Wales. But I did a lot of research and hard thinking first and was prepared to accept that I may be too old; thankfully, not yet.

    Shawn, I recently bought my first street bike as a project. it's a Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 classic. Now, before you say "that's too big of a bike for a first bike", I'm over 50, 6 ft tall and 230 lbs. Whenever I tried riding or even just sitting on smaller bikes, I felt like the "fat man in a little coat". I just couldn't get comfortable. They all felt too small. My bike is big, yes. However, I feel like I have a much better head on my shoulders now than when I was younger and I have a healthy, not irrational, fear. Just enough to respect it and not get stupid.

    I want to say. I appreciate that you wouldn't sell a bike to someone if you think of would make them unsafe.
    When I bought my first and current bike. Kawasaki Vulcan S. That was a major factor. I wanted to feel safe, with sheeting I could handle.
    However the Harley Davidson place where I took my test. Had just sold a Limited Edition $34k + bagger to some old lady who didn't pass the test. Before she even took it. I felt that was sleazy and unsafe and I'll never go back to that place.

    I agree 100%. At age 70 I needed to downsize my bike if I wanted to keep riding. I went from a GL1500 Goldwing to a V-Storm DL1000. I believe all 5 points are valid for ANYONE buying and not just first time buyers. If you are looking to buy a motorcycle, this is the most important video for you to watch. Nothing worse than to have something so expensive you cannot afford to ride it, or so big you are not able to ride it, or to settle for something that will make your riding experience a nightmare. Ride safe. - Ride Smart.

    This is the best piece of advice I’ve heard on TH-cam since I started riding motorcycles last year, I bought a 2007 Kawasaki Eliminator for 1200$ . Although it only goes about 55 and isn’t a Harley,I don’t worry about the beeping sound of a tow truck if I miss a note . I’ve put duct tape on it 😂,got saddle bags from the thrift store. I’m now looking for something bigger ,but I’ve already made my mind up ,along with the help of my wife. I’m not spending more than 3000$ .

      Hmmm, but if I can make any percentage better in other investments, why would I deplete my cash reserves? Sure, don't take out a harley davidson style loan at 9%... that is silly. But my 60 month for 0.99% is free money in my book.

    • @jaketyler7088
      @jaketyler7088 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@briankay3414 Your 0.99% is extremely low and losing you money due to inflation. Never invest in anything less than 2% whether CD's or high-interest savings accounts. Very rarely will loan/financing rates be lower than no-risk investments, so it's not really an argument. Don't be thinking "I can just invest in the stock market and get 7%" because that 7% might not happen, then you're really screwed. Lastly, the only cash reserve you should have is at max a 6-month emergency fund or saving for a large purchase...all other cash above that is losing value due to inflation.

    Insurance is a good one. I live in Manhattan. But keep the bike upstate. First quote was $1,000/yr. When told them no, the bike is in Columbia County, $400/yr.

    I've been on a 2008 VStrom 650 for 2+ years. It is my first bike, and I love it. I have an itch for a Kawasaki Concours 1400 as a second bike. Just because. Bad idea?

      Concours is a gorgeous bike, you won't regret it. And if you keep the V-Strom, respec it for ADV and get off-road!
      I got the Versys 650 for my first bike, but I'm hearing the siren song of a shaft drive in my future, I'm looking at Concours, an ST1300, or going right to a Goldwing.

      @matthewschmidt1013 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@opichocal I don't ride like a maniac, and more power isn't going to change that. I'm happy with my Weestrom and don't "need" another bike, but I would love to ride them all.

      @@davidkeith3920 My boss has a 2007 (I think) ST1300. Original owner. Low miles. He was going to sell it to me for $5k but I didn't think it would be wise for a first bike for me, and that was my budget limit including gear. It has also been sitting for a few years. Tires and battery are needed at a minimum to get it going. I wouldn't hesitate to ride it now but I'm not in buying mode yet.

    I am so ready for a bike and planned on getting a particular one this weekend and now i won't
    I am very good with money and kinda penny-counter lol
    But i wanted that bike really bad although i follow "the rule" if you don't got triple the amount of the purchase you wanna make..then you can't afford it....and that works for me.

    To me... buying a motorcycle is not the problem... The big problem is taking it to a shop for maintenance, and for mods... If I needed parts for the bike... they are not easy to come by....
    - For example I would like a Suzuki VStrom DL 650... but there are no Suzuki dealerships around me.

    my first ever bike was a 92 Harley Electra glide sport. OMG that weight almost made me give up riding. the 300 pound MSF bike did not prepare me for that (nor should it I'm the idiot here). Took me two weeks of just riding it in my development every chance could to learn the skills and techniques to properly handle that bike.

      it is / was a good solid touring bike and my friend put alot of miles on it, road it yr round went on big trips double up, he loved it , wore it out ....if you can find one in good shape go for it, just not as easy to keep on the road even with the internet providing a global parts source. I am a Suzuki fan so not brand loyalty to Honda or anything like that. The older big touring Yamaha V4 also a good machine. So back to the Cavalcade. We had to wait 2 weeks for things like brake light switches because dealers don't stock parts any more. We kept it going for him with tires oil chg etc. .just saying ...if you are mechanically inclined nothing is impossible. In closing ....mechanical parts can be found I'm sure but plastic i bet is priceless. Wish you the best : )

    I rode for a couple decades but quit riding after having kids. I realized the motorcycle was all about me. After having kids it's not about you anymore; I had to give up everything that took me away from my kids. When they grow up I will have all the time in the world, but the time I have with them is extremely limited to just a few years.

    I'm looking at my 'last' bike, because I figure I'll hang up by riding shoes at 80. It is not a toy, never was, as I use it more than a car. I'm 5' 9" and I want to have a normal, manageable street bike, like a Triumph Street Twin. Problem is a new one is expensive, though I still have money. Insurance is cheap, but yeah, a new bike will cost with Ins. and comprehensive. Shipping is expensive, isn't it?

    A motorbike is not a toy.
    For people who can't afford a car, and need to travel 15-20 miles to work, It's a necessity.
    It needs to work, and be able to handle the miles without falling apart, racking up 15-20,000 miles a year no problem

    Ehh, my bike is my transportation. It’s not a toy or a luxury. It is how I get around. It may be a toy to you but for a lot of us it is how we get from place to place.
    Not saying I don’t enjoy it. I actually gave my car away to my niece because it was collecting dust and she needed transportation.
    Rain or shine I am on 2 wheels.
