While there’s plenty to do in Denver, Colorado, if you’re looking to break away from the city, then you have to visit Ouray. Known as the recreation capital of the state, this mountain town has something for everyone, including one of the most infamous roads in the U.S. Plus, from Denver, you can get to this fun destination on just a single tank of gas.
Here are some of the best stops during a single-tank trip to Ouray.
Ouray Hot Springs. This is a must-visit stop in Ouray. The sulfur-free hot springs are managed by the city and have been operating for more than 90 years. Kick back and relax in hot spring pools as you soak up the mountain scenery surrounding the town.
Guided Jeep tours. Take an adventurous Jeep tour through the mountains with companies like Alpine Scenic Tours. These expeditions are a great way to explore the surrounding mountains, waterfalls, old mining towns, and more.
Ouray Perimeter Trail. If you’re looking for an activity that gets you moving, then hike all (or part) of the scenic Perimeter Trail. This trail has epic views and you can even bring along your furry companions on some of the trail’s sections.
Million Dollar Highway. Not for the faint of heart, this roadway is known as one of the most dangerous stretches of pavement in the U.S. But for some, the views are totally worth the trek as this is one of the most scenic highways in the country.
Silverton, Colorado. This nearby historical town is like stepping into the scene of an old Western film and has even been used as a filming location for several Hollywood movies. Grab a bite to eat, tour the many old buildings and shops, and enjoy the incredible mountainous views.
