ABOVE Ouray, CO in a Jeep 4x4. Our FAVORITE Colorado mountain town! | Newstates in the States

  • An outdoor lovers dream! Known as the “Switzerland of America,” the tiny mountain town of Ouray quickly stole our hearts with all it’s charm, natural beauty, and fantastic Jeep trails.
Surrounded by tall mountains, and located just 10 miles as the crow flies from Telluride, the mountain town of Ouray is VERY popular with outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. It’s known as the ‘Jeep Capital of the World” thanks to the plentiful off-road and 4x4 trails throughout the towering mountains. The “Switzerland of America,” “Outdoor Adventure Capital of Colorado,” and “Ice Climbing Capital of the World” joins all the Jeeps to possibly make Ouray the “Superlative Per Capita Capital of the World” with all its titles.
We picked up some of the homemade donuts from Timberline Deli and strolled the lively mainstreet of this town of 1,000 full-time inhabitants before checking out the Perimeter Trail which rings Ouray. For fellow dog lovers out there, we discovered once we started the hike that only one half of the trail is approved for dogs. So we doubled back down the steep stairs before heading to Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours to start our adventure.
Being the ‘Jeep Capital of the World,’ we knew that seeing the mountains by jeep was a must and Alpine Scenic Jeep tours came highly recommended. We booked a private, four hour tour, filled out some quick paperwork, met our awesome driver Sam, and loaded into our adventure mobile before making the steady climb into the mountains that surround Ouray.
Exploring old mining towns, driving through creeks and streams and over boulders that seem too large to scale, this epic Jeep tour is an outdoor enthusiasts dream. Sam was incredibly knowledgeable after spending the past 20 years traversing the roads of these mountains and was quick to point out changes in landscape due to avalanches or remnants of old mining equipment. It’s truly one of the best excursions we’ve ever done and would highly recommend booking a Jeep Tour through their company if you’re planning a trip to Ouray. Ask for Sam while you’re at it!
This charming little town quickly shot to the top of our list for favorite towns in Colorado. Ouray is also well known for their hot springs, something we didn’t get to indulge in during this trip. But don’t worry, we’ll be back. Hooray for Ouray!
Special thanks to Sam & Alpine Scenic Jeep tours!

When you get to Gunnison. Don't miss Garlic Mikes for dinner & cocktails on the river. In Crested Butte: The Secret Stash for the most amazing Pizza. Followed by Chocolate Martini's at The Wooden Nickle. Don't forget to pick up Niky's Mini Donuts. You won't be sorry.

Jeri, thank you so much for all the recommendations! The videos come out weeks after we're in a place, but we definitely will be showing off Stash and Niky's donuts in tomorrow's video! They were delicious, kind of bummed that we have to wait for chocolate martinis until our next visit. Got any ideas for Leadville or the area around Denver? That's next for us. 👍 So glad you found our channel, and please keep the ideas coming! -Howard

Ouray is our favorite place to visit in the US. Wife and I have been there 3 times coming from Alabama. Once on a M/C, once in a big MH and once in a '92 Totota MR2 where we did not put the top up unless it was pouring rain. Heaven on earth.! Thanks for the video.

In this location did you have any difficulty adjusting to the altitude? Years ago I spent a couple days in a pop-up camper up above Colorado Springs with an altitude sick kid and now I'm leery of covering a lot of ground/long drive days into the mountains.

    • @NewstateNomads

Sean, glad you found us and great questions! We do unhook, but typically it's not until we get to the campground (or on low speed steep hills it does help protect the Sprinter engine).
