Wow. I love Haydn's and Mozart's early stuff. So, so gorgeous.

I love that moment in the second strain of the finale where the 2 violin parts are chugging away, playing this string of suspensions but trading the voices back and forth, while the oboes play the same thing in long tones, not trading voices, to glue the two voices together. Such a cool and subtle effect.

This is the one that got me hooked on the cycle! The no nonsense writing for the horns in A for every movement was really inspiring for me. Unfortunately I didn’t learn it myself by osmosis. Now it’s better to enjoy the whole work.

      So damn high (in pitch)

@@SisselOnline wait till number 51! High up to Bb and low to A natural (not that bad for solo writing but very low for classical symphony writing). Zelenka wrote up to high B natural and a couple of Bach’s cantatas go up to high C natural

I see often by Haydn that the viola's double the bass at the octave and so are often higher than the violins but I don't hear this how can this be ?

@@SisselOnline I see. But the horns sound somehow different than in the other Hogwood-Haydn-symphonies, more 'pinched' (maybe because there is a lower fundamental in this type?)

@@SisselOnline ok, I have rhe answer. It is a question apparently of using horn (Bflat) 'alto' or 'basso'. Apparently Robbins Landon insisted that Haydn used alto before his Parisian symphonies, something that became common in practice with his edition of the Haydn-symphonies. And I had no idea of this...😊
