    Thumbs up for elevator music!
    👍🎷
    The original video was 43 minutes long. Here’s some more results that didn’t make the cut for those of you who are interested:
    - HDMI Info. Display: Sony can only do it in 1080p. Nikon doesn’t have it at all, but Nikon can display the menu screen on two screens simultaneously, where the Sony cannot.
    - The Nikon puts its video files in a more logical location than the Sony. Sony has them nested strangely three folders deep.
    - The Nikon includes a battery charger and a quality USB Type-C cable. The Sony only comes with a USB charger and a Type-B cable.
    - The Sony’s battery display indicator disappears too quickly when shooting. The Nikon’s stays on all the time, but doesn’t show a percentage, just bars.
    - Setting a custom white balance is easier on the Sony, but less accurate. I found it unintuitive to do on the Nikon and I had to consult the manual, but in post the Nikon produced a more accurate scene with its custom WB.
    - The Sony has a “Rule of Thirds” grid, but the Nikon does not. The Nikon has a grid, but it’s one of those 4x5 multi-grids.
    - The Sony has an HDMI Type-D Micro Port, which is common but a bit flimsy. The Nikon uses a Type-C Mini, which is more robust, but a lot less common.
    - There’s a weird bug HDMI Recording Control on the Nikon Z6. If you have it in 8-bit you can trigger the Atomos with camera record, but when you switch to 10-bit, the record button no longer works. Then, strangely, if you enable N-Log while still on 10-bit, the record control comes back again.

      In fairness, that is comparing Cine2 to Log. Log gets noisier in those drastic situations. It's actually one of the reasons why I prefer Cine2 on the Sony. You get less dynamic range, but it holds up better. This is true for many hybrid cameras and their Log profiles.

  • @jeffzanin5503
    @jeffzanin5503 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Nice comparison. I am using Nikon for photo so biased towards the Z6 for video but find it incredibly frustrating that all of the hybrid cameras seem to have some deficiencies that could have been (and perhaps still can be) eliminated.
    Obviously (?) the designers can see the features of other products and maybe even how people are using them, but my sense is that the engineers are still in grade school especially when it comes to managing power and heat disapation in the hybrid cameras. But when you look across the GH5, 1DX II, A7III, X-T3 and even the Z6 almost everything you want is on one or two of them, but none of them has all the things you want.
    Despite all of this we have never had this much capability in reasonably small and affordable cameras, and it gets better all the time.

    You missed some points in favour of Nikon like better Evf and better LCD with full touch functionality and one more thing that Sony crops 1.2 times while recording 4k 30p which can be a deal breaker for many and you can map control ring on Nikon s line lenses for ISO, aperture.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Some good points here. Thanks for pointing them out.
      - The EVF is terrible on both for video. It is great for photos on the Nikon though. EVFs always look choppy and weird for video in my opinion.
      - There is full touch functionality, yes. I should have mentioned that when I was comparing screen sizes. I really only use it for AF though, and they both do that.
      - The 4K30 crop is a good point too. I forget about it often, because I usually only shoot 24p or 60p.
      - The control ring though I can't get behind. I can't see myself every using that for anything but focus.
      Either way, good insights.

    • @BenBB3D
      @BenBB3D 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way I solved this on the Sony is to create a custom preset which I can access through the mode dial. It‘s pretty convenient and aside from the exposure settings and picture profile you can also store specific display preferences and such. So I think there is no real reason to prefer the Nikon just because of this, since you don‘t really lose time from turning a dial compared to flipping a switch.

    This was a great video for me to watch. I had upgraded to a Nikon D810 a while back only because I owned a few lenses but I was really interested in the Sony. Now I have a substantial investment in Nikon glass so I think the Z6 is the right choice for the next camera to add a second camera for video work. Even for some 1080p 120fps.

  • @DjCjFoto
    @DjCjFoto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    Very good comparison, but one thing bothers me a bit, as an owner of Z6. You repeated a few times about Z6 almost being inferior in photography mode. Everyone knows that A7III has an edge in AF department, or EYE AF, but that's it. That doesn't make Z6 to be apprised such way. It is an excellent camera, with quite a few things better than A7III that may mean more to some people, including myself, than EYE AF. I mean, better EFV, better and bigger LCD (which doesn't block if you use polarized glasses), top display, ergonomics, bigger buttons, weather protection. It could be something else, but these are my points, why I decided to pick Z6 over A7III, without owing any F Nikon lenses. Just saying that this camera is almost only for those who already owe F lenses is a bit foolish to me, and I'm a bit tired listening that over and over. I didn't mentioned new S lenses, and what's coming in the pipe line, that's a different story, but I certainly like that story as well.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Definitely made some fair points. I think I jumbled my message there a bit. For me, I personally prefer the Sony, but when I said it was "less minor" for photography, I meant there were larger differences between them than for video. As you pointed out in your comment, it was more clear which you preferred for photography. For me it was more clear that I preferred the Sony for photography than it was for video. So when it comes to buying, I would base it more on your photography preferences, because the video is quite close. For me, that's Sony.

    • @DjCjFoto
      @DjCjFoto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@geraldundone With full respect to you preference, A7III is a great choice, but it's not just about your choice, you're recommending to the others too, people watch. In order to be fair and balanced, you need to highlight the advantages on Z6 in photography mode, just like you did in video mode (excellent job), and there are some, which mean a lot to some people. For example, I would never buy a camera which has LCD blocked if you wear polarized glasses. I don't take mine off when I'm hiking or I'm outside, it doesn't matter how good AF is on that camera, I won't buy it, even if I have to focus manually. Sony made me to pass on A7III with a stupid LCD design.

    • @geraldundone

      Im gonna pick the camera that has the better picture quality, the A7iii is the better camera out of the two and I find it funny how Nikon users need to defend their camera choice when it's obviously the best choice for them if they already have Nikon glass. If you are a new shooter or just getting into full frame and haven't invested heavily into Nikon glass, then the Sony a7iii is the clear winner. I was thinking it would have been good to do some tests for improperly exposed shots, where you have to push the shadows/highlights a long way. I'm hoping you'll get a Panasonic S1 and test it soon. In this case though, it wasn't the exposure, it was the 200% saturation and full colour shift. Other Logs do it too, not just Nikon.

    Aarrrgh, the missing video/photo switch is a real pity. But, what annoys me more is that the Sony is not even able to save the seperate settings between photo and video mode. The only way would be using the Memory option, but for that you also need more than one button to be pressed. Definitely a big point to improve on the Sony.

You help me think about switching over but Nikon came up a shorty in the video side on thing in this model Z6 but I am sure the Z7 is better, just like when Sony came out with the A7 A7R. Hi there, Gerald, and thanks for this review (just watching it again for like the fifth time). What is going on at 7:31 with the red square in the Z6 image? Looks like lots of noise??? Did you notice that in any other shots? (I only saw it on the Rubik's cube shots.)

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I'm not sure myself. The blinking is caused by the tally light on the recorder that I forgot to turn off, but the noisier red square was peculiar. I blame it on the fact that no official LUT exists and perhaps the red came in too hot, because it didn't happen with the Flat profile.

    • @marin_real_estate_photography
      @marin_real_estate_photography 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@geraldundone Thanks for the explanation. Seems kind of strange because it looks like the Z6 image is a LITTLE bit darker than the a7 III image in that shot. Also, strangely enough, in the preceding still frame with the Rubik's cube against the gray card, you can still see that noise on the red square, but not in that red ribbon on the lower right hand side. (or maybe the texture of the ribbon is just "hiding" the noise???). When you had the Z6 around, did you noticed reduced AF performance when shooting in N-LOG? Seen some reports that AF suffers when shooting N-LOG.

    Regarding 8-bit vs. 10-bit and higher, I love the video with Dave Dugdale and Matt Scott that demonstrates just how well the supposedly "hideous" Sony 8-bit 4:2:0 holds up against 10-bit and even 12- bit footage from other manufacturers. It doesn't beat them, but it holds its own. Matt has some strong and sometimes profane opinions on this, and his tests were fantastic.
    With that said, the newer cameras with 10-bit make SLog3 practical, and that helps.

  • @adrianvanleeuwen

    What some other video vloggers are saying is to work around the preamp issue in Nikon z6 is use an external mic with boost in audio set to 10+ db for example (or use a Shure with display) and then lower the incamera mic to a low setting so recording audio is cleaner. Is this correct to your opinion to do, Gerald? Or is the only way is to use an external audio recorder and sync later. I think the mic boosted audio is an easier solution so no need to sync later, to get better audio. What do you think?

    I know this is from over a year ago and finally watched it, but I have to say being a long time Nikon shooter and then picking up a Sony RX100 Mark 7 vs my Z6 for both photos and video, I am hands down 100% all in on Nikon. Both photo and video wise, especially since the recent release of the new 3.0 update with the Nikon Z series cameras, the Nikon has nearly as good 3D tracking if not better, better colour for BOTH photo and video, I also noticed with the RX100 Mark 7 with RAW images there was HEAVY vignetting compared to using the Jpeg files. I mainly use the RX100 Mark 7 for run and gun vlogging and that is the extent of use the camera gets, mainly just because of the flip up screen.

  • @TonyDae

    Thanks for the vid Mr. Undone.
    On the 8/10 bit section, I would be interested to see a comparison in regards to perfect WB/Exposure and an over under stretch between them with color swatches and more importantly, skin tones. This means over expose a bit, under expose a bit, set WB heavy orange and heavy blue and see what you can get back. If history is a teacher, as I have done this quite often between other cameras such as the 8bit Canons in CLOG or 8 bit Sony's in SLOG... compared to 10 bit counterparts, I have noticed not too much a difference until you get something wrong such as the WB or exposure. Sometimes there are difference in the way mid tones are rendered and can be visibly compressed compared to 10 bit, likely making room for information in the shadows in highlights. I saw this a lot with the Panasonic GH series when people started using 8 bit LOG.
    I found that 8 bit does not hold up as well in those cases and you easily get alien skin whereas 10 bit offers a good amount more flexibility to correct footage with less glaring issues. This I believe is where higher bits can really help out in comparison to 8 bit.
    Of course, you should always shoot to get it right, but I know that nobody's perfect, and I have certainly been in color correction hell before. It is not a nice place and the more bit friends you've got, the better.

    One thing this illuminated was Nikon planning for the future - which while a nice sentiment is not really technology nowadays, they'll release a new camera before the cards become popular, and usb type-c mini etc, 8-bit at ~115Mbps not exactly an enormous leap as you say, could easily be put down to codec performance.

    The site www.slashcam.de (german) says that the Z6 makes a crop of 1,1 when the electronic stabilization or 10bit external recording is on. The sharpest/cleanest image is 4K FX 8 bit extern. So can you test the Z6 without electronic stabilization in 4K intern and extern against the Sony?

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did some tests and can confirm that crop. I don't know if it is exactly 1.1x, but it's small. And yeah, it only occurs with the E-stabilizer. Regular VR doesn't crop. And any 10-bit will have it as well. I'll try and compile some side-by-sides of it.

    Hi Gerald. You said the bitrate with the z6 ranges between 115 and 140mb/s... If you record externally though, and are using a ninja v that bitrate jumps hugely, or am I wrong?? The hdmi out is not limited to a certain bitrate is it?? Wouldn't that mean that if you were planning to record with a ninja v, even in prores 422, the colour information and image quality would be hugelt better with the z6 ninjav combo??

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right, with most cameras the bit rate does not apply to the HDMI out, that is instead set by the external recorder. So, if you chose ProRes it would depend on which ProRes you chose, because Apple has defines the bit rates for each quality setting of ProRes.

    How does the Nikon hold up to heating up when recording internally? and does your sony overheat?

    • @geraldundone

      The Sony only overheats for me after over 2 hours of handheld recording internally. And even then it's the standard warning, not the extreme warning. Neither gave me any warnings during the battery drain test, so you're probably good for at least 2 hours in normal climates. The Nikon is a bit bigger, so it might dissipate heat a little better.
