  • At 1.93m, Pieter Rossouw - dubbed “Slaptjips” - was one of the tallest wings in Springbok history. Ironically, his international career spanned exactly six years - he debuted against the British & Irish Lions on June 28, 1997 and played his final Test against Argentina on June 28, 2003.
During that period, he played in 43 Tests in which he scored 21 tries. The lanky speedster was known as a master of the intercept who scored several tries due to his superb vision and acceleration off the mark. His height also made him a solid player under the highball. He scored his first Springbok try in his second Test against the British & Irish Lions and earned a nomination for 1997 SA Player of the Year in his maiden international season.
Rossouw produced a number of brilliant individual performances including scoring a hat-trick against Wales and a crucial try against the All Blacks that saw the Boks record a rare win on New Zealand soil. However, his most memorable performance was against France in Paris on November 22, 1997, where he scored a then record-equalling four tries in the 52-10 drubbing.
After a nine-year stretch at Western Province, Rossouw went abroad where he linked up with London Irish in a player-coach capacity. He has since returned to South Africa and is currently the backline coach of the Bulls.
    Enjoy and thanks for watching!

Back when all the rugby jerseys (in the world) were XXL!
Love this man though. great era for the stormers too, Percy, Paulse, Skinstad, Fleck... Slaptjips! Gotta say though, Skinstad's linking with the backline was brilliant - one of the best distributors, often popping up in the flyhalf position.

Doubt anyone was better than him in a two-on-one defensive situation. He often turned an almost certain try by the opposition into a try for his side. Intercept-master!

Pieter Rossouw's try against the All Blacks at 21:12 was in the second half of a test match in Wellington, I think in 1996. I will remember that try for as long as I live. Rossouw was the blindside wing on an attacking scrum inside the NZ 22 and he just chimes into a 9-10 wrap around by Joost Van der Westhuizen and Henry Hornibal. Hornibal took the pass and dummies to Joost angling towards No.7 Josh Kronfeld and left No.10 Andrew Mehrtens in no-man's land not knowing whether to take HH or chase JvW. In the end poor JK was faced with the job of covering HH and shutting the gate (gap) left open by Mehrts. I'll bet many school teams, club sides and provincial XVs tried this play or variations of it with varying degrees of success, I'm sure. But after some thought I realised why it worked so well that sunny day in Wellington all those years ago: both JvW and HH were running halves, known primarily for the threat they posed with their ability with ball in hand and this must have tempered the All Blacks defence which waited off them for a fraction too long before realising all too late who the intended recipient was. I doubt this move would've worked had it been any other combination of SA halves (9-10). Fourie Du Preez and Butch James perhaps, Ricky Januarie and Andre Pretorius maybe...

Was Rossouw the fastest player in that Springbok era ? Faster than monty, Paulse, etc ? I think so. Tall man with long strides, does not look faster than the smaller men who have fast , shorter strides, but I think he was faster than the others. Also, was he not a top schoolboy pole vaulter ?
