    Riggs! Just thought I'd say that you're one of the people I look up to in the retro gaming community. I'm only 18 and I've been in retro for a bit over 2 years now. I remember I ran into your instagram account out of no where then subscribed here when I found out you had a channel. Every time I see your videos in my sub box I always watch man. Seriously, don't loose your touch and keep on being awesome. I do hope I get to meet the Rigg Master himself one day though! Take care.

    I have a question though how does the games work in the system without the nintendo chip inside to bypass the nintendo lockout chip

    • @Kara_Kay_Eschel
      @Kara_Kay_Eschel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I seen where Ben Heck disabled the lockout chip in the front loader, and removed the lockout on the cart and the game worked.
      the chip is still there for backwards compatibility.

    Wonderful video! I'd love to get my hands on some of these boards especially for those games that take 8 wires. It's so much cheaper to make your own repros. Without the guide of your videos I would have never understood the creation process. The first repro I ever made was Birdweek on a CNROM. If you could do a video on the games that require rewiring that would be great. Thanks for the great content. You deserve millions of subscribers.

    There is a program coming out called NES MAKER it is where you can make games that works on original hardware. How would I tell what board and chips I need

  • @AsilarWindsailor
    @AsilarWindsailor 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are any of these PCBs suitable for replacing the originals in the NES cartridges? I have some games that are worn and the PCB edges that contact the slot inside the NES are so thin now that they hardly work anymore. I've even replaced the slot and still they are difficult to make contact properly. I was thinking I'd desolder the chips and drop them on to a fresh PCB

    What type of solder would use recommend for this type of work? My eyes started glazing over when I went to buy some and then saw all of the different types. I also have a USB battery charger to fix. (Plugs into USB port and charges AA/AAA batteries.) It works but they missed soldering one spot so one battery slot is flaky. It doesn't require pairs to be inserted to work.
    Anyway, I hope to teach myself to solder in the hopes to do console repairs and mods some day.

    • @JohnRiggs
      @JohnRiggs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What works for you! So long as it solders. I get mine from Radio shack.

      John Riggs: RIGG'd Games
      Thanks.
      I'm a novice with zero experience. When I went to Fry's Electronics last year, they had like 10 different types. I've forgotten the specifics, but looking at the solder that came with a practice kit, I know lead content was one detail. I don't recall if all had a rosin core.
      How do these differences affect the work being done? I figure there are different types for a reason.

    • @tylisirn
      @tylisirn 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're soldering old electronics (or just your own hobby works): lead-tin solder (60/40 and 64/37 both work), rosin flux, preferably multicore, as thin as you can find (0.5mm or even thinner)
      For newer (ROHS compliant, lead-free) electronics: tin-silver-copper solder, definitely multicore and definitely as thin as you can find. You want as much flux compared to the solder as you can get to make up for the worse wetting characteristics of lead-free solder.
      Flux is your friend, especially when you're a beginner. It's what makes the solder flow and bind to the copper tracks and component leads. Without flux the solder will just want to ball up on your iron tip and generally go everywhere except where you want it to. You may even want to get a flux pen for really stubborn components. If the solder isn't grabbing, apply liberally and try again.
      You shouldn't mix leaded and lead free solder when working on a board, but in practice it's not usually that big of a deal. Just make sure you clean off the old solder well with a solder wick or pump. One thing to note is that if you're using wrong tip compared to your solder (leaded vs lead free), the tip on the iron can corrode much faster than usual because the solder attacks the plating. This is not a problem with all tips, but something to be aware of if it happens to you.

      Thank you. I originally asked because of a Dreamcast mod I wanted to do - replacing the system battery with a battery holder to make changing batteries easier.
      I also have a USB AA/AAA battery charger where they forgot to solder a wire to a contact. Fairly new and the only charger I've had that doesn't require batteries to be done in pairs.

    Can any of these boards be used to create Zelda: Legend of Link? If so, which one and what additional capacitors, resistors, etc are required?

    • @untasnaz
      @untasnaz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zelda: Legend of Link is an MMC5 game and the boards on this video only go up to MMC3. It would be epic if someone was able to come out with an MMC5 board but I don't think there is an MMC5 clone chip in existence yet unfortunately. Anyone in the know, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

    Found the blue SNK board in one of my games. That is supposedly one of many 5 screw games that apparently have this done often. I only have one chip that says SNK on it. The rest of the chips say NES. But the blue board is idetical. I have no wires like you said. Just the different looking chip that says SNK and the blue board made or done almost professionally if you ask me.

    i've searched high and low for an answer to this but cant seem to find one:
    how can i tell the rom type of a hacked NES rom to be able to put it on a Muramasa board? i.e., NROM, CNROM, SxROM, TxROM, UxROM
    i can pull up rom info in an emulator, but it only tells me Mappertype (0,1,3) but doesnt tell me what board i should use, and being that they're hacks, they dont seem to appear on any datasheet anywhere. is there a way to figure this out another way??

      Download the Famirom software. It will tell you the type of board you need for the hack. Furthermore, you're going to need the Famirom in order to split/format your files to be put on Eproms.

    Hi John, great videos---thank you very much for them! I have a question....i just made my first game, using a muramasa TxROM basic board to make Little Samson (for myself). I had a MM3 chip that came from Muramasa and I took a CIC chip off of a "Golf" board. All chips are placed properly too. I split the ROMS and everything seems great. My soldering looks good (I think) and I've checked it over many times. but I don't get any video. I can hear everything working like when I hit the start button or attack, so it seems the game is playing I just don't have video. so is it my soldering, or am I supposed to program the mm3 chip? Or do I have to use a different CIC chip?
    ...and another question, please....i want to make games for the NES like Summer Carnival '92 w/Pure Hack, new Ghostbusters II, Ducktales 2 with Darkwing 2P hack, and of course Holy diver. Can I use Muramasa boards for these without wiring? Thanks for all the info!

    I really appreciate what your doing John, it always made me cringe when I thought of all those NES games that were being destroyed. Also, when you mentioned using a different label for Dino Peak was nice to hear, too many people thing that slapping a tiny little "repro" mark at the bottom of the label is good enough. I feel like it hurts the hobby if it's not 100% obvious that the game is a reproduction. I've seen a lot of scams that started with good intentions.

    • @JohnRiggs
      @JohnRiggs  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Chris Roberts Exactly. That's also why I change the title screen or put 'repro' somewhere in the game itself, too, that way someone can't just replace their own label. Still, in getting a high-priced game, always ask to see pics of the board.
