Tried this (have done it before) and followed your guide. I used Makaimura as a donor. I did a Famicom cart! Succesfully finished it thanks to your video! Thanks for a great guide.
I can confirm this works for AMROM. Used this guide to turn a 28pin Captain Skyhawk, to a Nightmare on Elmstreet in a M27C2001 32 pin EPROM. I know its not the best game ever but I needed to test a Four Score, and that was the only game available with my current donors. Regards John!
man i been watching your channel for a few weeks now, and i'm really staring to think that's something i could try to do! when i was a kid i could only have dreamed of doing something like that, and now i really could, that's super cool!
resistors are coded by the bands on the body.... they work by "resisting" electricity. they may be fragile, but replacing resistors with modern replacements won't damage anything.
Oh man... I also wanted to tell you that the resistor can be soldered anyway. The leads are not polarized (+/-), so it can't be put in wrong, just as long as you are using the correct 2 holes. They are the easiest component to replace, incase you break it pulling it out.
hey john keep up the good work... have you thought about making a board with a socket to where you can test the eprom before soldering it into a donor board ?
2 things. Could you try to do a famicom repro? Also could you at least use a fan while soldering, I got asthma from soldering the way you do. It also makes you incredibly sick. Just get a big box fan leave it on low so the camera doesn't pick it up, and work near a window.
John, I have an NES game with a UN-ROM with the chips laying horizontally . Would you know what Muramasa board would be compatible with Pro Wrestling so I could do a board swap? Thanks, great video keep the content coming!
After one failed attempt I was able to make my very first repro of roll-chan (megaman hack).....But i was wondering if somebody might know why im getting graphic issues. the title screen and level select look fine until i chose a level, and the beginning of the levels look fine until i move into the level a little. Still happy I got something working though. Thanks John!!!
check to see if the horizontal or vertical are soldered and swap the solder blob some games use horizontal some use vertical to scroll the memory for graphics.
Yes! The one I've been waiting for. Do you do anything special to the rom image when flashing it? Some suggest "doubling the data to fill the ROM". I tried making a Labyrinth with one of the Konami carts, "doubling the data", and it was a no go. Now that I've got your help, I'm gonna go back through the steps. You rock Riggs! \m/
I read that if you're using M27C2001s to make UNRoms, you have to pad the EPROM to fill it. Something about the games only needing M27C1001s which are only 128kb instead of the 256kb that M27C2001s are. Before I go ahead and potentially ruin the EPROM, can you give me any clarity on this? Thanks again, Riggs.
Hey John, I have been wanting to make my own repros and was wondering if the type of EPROM programmer I purchased matter and if there are different types. Noob question I know lol. Thanks!
Need some help here, i've done everything exactly the same way that you have. I tried different boards but nothing but I found a Konami borad and wired it the exact same way and it worked, seems that the unrom board wiring is wrong or the game that I'm making won't work on the unrom board which doesn't make no sense because that's what it's produced on. any information would be appreciated, the game that I'm making is ducktales 2. again the method for the second board in this video worked for me but the first method did not, is there any reason why it didn't?
Damn, i really want to start doing this but getting the tools to do so, is the first step. Not sure if I'm ready to take the plunge yet, but these videos sure make me think about it! What was the second game? Must have missed you saying the name.
Hi John I would like to make repro game California Risins - UNROM but my board is NES-UNROM-10 not NES-UNROM-09 like yours. Can I still use this board and make it same way?? Thanks
UOROM wires the same! There's only a couple of donors you can use, though. I'm sure there's a way to turn UNROM to UOROM but didn't work for me. I'll have to see if I can find another way.
Is there a site or how do you know which games need pins to be wired different. I made Little Samson and used a Top Gun 2 board, but its not working so I am guessing it may need extra wires.
I think I found 1 problem I was using 28 pin rom and I think it needs to be the 32. I did get a message saying size exceeded. But I used a 28 pin 512 so I thought it would work, but i think that's my problem. But I still need to know where to find out what games need wires and how you know where they go.
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games True, for some reason I thought UNROM to UOROM conversions were possible, but I misread UNROM to AOROM conversions. Whoops! Keep up the vids. They are a HUGE help! Created my first 2 UNROM repros since this video! You were right, the Konami boards are so easy to desolder and work with.
I did some more research as the newest Contra hack "Contra: Attack of the Blue Falcon" is REALLY good so I want it on a cart. There appears to be a UNROM to UOROM conversion on nesdev I may try out. Just search for "UNROM to UOROM nesdev" on google and it comes up. Wish me luck!
after 2 years. Its time. Im gonna do it. Any help or info anyone knows would help. I will start with UOROM boards (paperboy2). The only reason I bought all the equipment is to make Contra + CastleVania hacks ( as far as NES goes.
just the soldering and tagging the wires would probably take about 15 minutes or so. Removing the chip is about five minutes with the verification and cleaning of the solder, placement of the chip and soldering the connections would be about the same. this doesn't include the time to put a label together or flash the eprom. if you are doing it with moderate soldering skill and a bit of experience probably an hour. im betting that he can do it all in about 25 minutes or so.. could probably do like 6 games in 2 hours
Hey John, I wanted to bounce a thought off you. I've never programmed EPROMs before so I need your advice. I recently got a Battletoads for the Sega Genesis and the game is DOA. I tried taking the EPROM off the PCB and transplanting it onto a Sonic The Hedgehog PCB thinking that the PCB pins or traces were screwy. Turns out, the Sonic EPROM works fine on the former Battletoads PCB but the Battletoads game is still DOA on the Sonic PCB. I'm thinking the chip itself needs to be reflashed and was looking at buying a GQ-4X EPROM programmer to reprogram it. Will this thought process work? I plan on just reprogramming the existing chip. I also want to get into programming hacks onto cartridges so I wouldn't just be buying this programmer for this explicit reason, it's just happening out of necessity at this point. Was just looking for advice from someone who's more knowledgeable than I at this. Thanks!
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Awesome, the one I'm looking at comes with a 16 bit EPROM adapter so it should work. Definitely gonna be hanging around your channel more as I get more into this.
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Gamerz Tek ( GT ) nes/snes console is what I'm talking about hope it's the same 1 your thinking about because you make Ill ( good ) games
Just got all the equipment. The main purpose if to put Contra and CastleVania Hack on carts. HArd to find anyone who has successfully put a contra hack on a cart. Is there a reason? Is that frowned upon? I spent over $200 just to make a contra hack XD. Any help to the cause and I will unite with anyone towards this purpose.
john. in this video. the bridge. didn't you mean to say pin 31 and 32 toguether ? you said pin 30 in the video but you never said to bend pin 30 at the begining.
+carlos cabrera You have to bridge 30 (which is already in the hole) to pin 32 (floating). Though I wonder what would happen if you bridge all three together. hmm...
Sweet. I am thinking about attempting a Mario 3mix for my first try hehe :). Will prolly buy the chips pre programmed to try it out before i invest in a programmer tho.
I’m glad that now we have PCBWay to make new boards instead of having to break old games.
Tried this (have done it before) and followed your guide. I used Makaimura as a donor. I did a Famicom cart! Succesfully finished it thanks to your video! Thanks for a great guide.

+martin blouin That's how I thought of it before I started. The tools is the hardest part. If you have the tools, you can do it.
Great job, and don’t forget to cover those eeprom chips with black tape just in case to avoid that data will wear out by strong light or heat.
I'm happy to be your patreon John, keep up the awesome videoes. Love watching your videoes to learn how to fix cartridge games and make repros :)
Good stuff John. That's exactly how I do them (thanks to you teaching me) I'm glad you showed the board variations
resistors are coded by the bands on the body.... they work by "resisting" electricity. they may be fragile, but replacing resistors with modern replacements won't damage anything.
THE best! Thanks again for another tutorial! Can't wait to start making my own repros.
funny note, on the board for that resistor the slikscreen symbol is for a capacitor
Great video. Keep up the good work John.
Oh man... I also wanted to tell you that the resistor can be soldered anyway. The leads are not polarized (+/-), so it can't be put in wrong, just as long as you are using the correct 2 holes. They are the easiest component to replace, incase you break it pulling it out.
+Captain Awesome Good to know! Thanks!
Love these demonstrations, keep it up!
I wish I could do this , awesome work John !!!
Those are power decoupling capacitors :) The schematic on the board is the symbol for a capacitor and they're labeled C*.
hey john keep up the good work...
have you thought about making a board with a socket to where you can test the eprom before soldering it into a donor board ?
+cavaliersrus Yep, I have a few! Not one for each board type, but ones for most that I use.
Great video! Is it possible to use a flash rom chip? Would the rewiring be any different?
2 things. Could you try to do a famicom repro? Also could you at least use a fan while soldering, I got asthma from soldering the way you do. It also makes you incredibly sick. Just get a big box fan leave it on low so the camera doesn't pick it up, and work near a window.
Hello John, congratulations for the tutorial. I would like to ask you what kind of electric cable do you uses, and where can I buy it. Thanks so much
You can have it face up or down, they don't have a direction on them :)
+TheNintendoDoctor yea was just about to post that lol.

Look like a good video.
Can you download game to old cartridge?
+Captain Awesome Yep, still need to fill up the eprom by doubling or quadrupling as needed.I just put all roms through Famirom as it's easiest for me.
Hi jhon, I need your help, I've done everything step by step and I can not do the unrom, several times I've tried, some advice?
Damn, i really want to start doing this but getting the tools to do so, is the first step. Not sure if I'm ready to take the plunge yet, but these videos sure make me think about it! What was the second game? Must have missed you saying the name.
+Nintenjoel Yeah, the video chopped off that part, but the second game was Labyrinth. I just showed quick game play. Nothing fancy.
Oh actually you did say that in the beginning! Is that game decent?
+Nintenjoel I think it's pretty terrible. You can see gameplay footage. Still, wouldn't've minded it coming to the US.
That's awesome!!!!!
Hi John I would like to make repro game California Risins - UNROM but my board is NES-UNROM-10 not NES-UNROM-09 like yours. Can I still use this board and make it same way?? Thanks
Yes, so long as it's UNROM it should work.
Cali Raisins works great on NES-UNROM-10 :D another good tutorial John. Titan Warriors is next rerpo I would like to do for my NES collection.
It's a capacitor, for decoupling.
What about UOROM? Can you cover that? There's a few nice homebrews that use UOROM.
UOROM wires the same! There's only a couple of donors you can use, though. I'm sure there's a way to turn UNROM to UOROM but didn't work for me. I'll have to see if I can find another way.
High Ridge do you own a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One
I have M27c512's 28-DIP, is the rewiring kinda the same?
how do you know which board type certain hacks use? is it just the base game board type?
With great pressure comes great responsibility 12:17

one day Ill figure all this out.
Hi matey is there any other eproms for SNES ei cheaper or write once chips.
Have you ever done a UOROM? A lot of the new contra hacks like Attack of the Blue Falcon and Revenge of the Red Falcon use UOROMS.
+Nicky Nooch I haven't, but would love to. The only UOROM donors are too expensive.
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games True, for some reason I thought UNROM to UOROM conversions were possible, but I misread UNROM to AOROM conversions. Whoops! Keep up the vids. They are a HUGE help! If you weren't filming this, how long would it take someone with your skills to make a repro cart?

+Nick Jennings That certainly sounds like a way to fix it. It's no longer legit, but as long as it's working - better than have it NOT working.
+Nick Jennings Also know that the GQ-4X needs an adapter to do Genesis games since Genesis games are longer than the GQ-4X can hold.
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Awesome, the one I'm looking at comes with a 16 bit EPROM adapter so it should work. Definitely gonna be hanging around your channel more as I get more into this.
lets see some genesis repros
I would have more fun making these games than I would playing them.
But will it work on a gamerz tek nes/snes console?
+LongIslandADED. It should. I've never encountered one that hasn't, yet.
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games awesome so have you ever used a GT ned/snes console
+LongIslandADED. Oh! I was thinking of a different clone system. But it should still work.

Probably next tutorial :)
Sweet. I am thinking about attempting a Mario 3mix for my first try hehe :). Will prolly buy the chips pre programmed to try it out before i invest in a programmer tho.
United Nations roms awesome
+gull payne Ha! UNRoms.. too funny.
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games love the videos keep it up
Resistor? Which side is up? Really?!
Doing repros like it's 1990.. your method is heavily deprecated and outdated.
Tried and true methods of a bygone era! I wish I knew how to make my own games in 1990.
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games oh, that would have been awesome!
