- In this video, we take a look at Chevy's Forgotten First Tuner Car - the Cobalt SS.
The Cobalt SS was originally built as a regular car, but was modified by GM to improve its performance specifically for the tuner market with the help of Saab and so on and so forth.

I agree man. The Saturn ion Redline came out a year before the Cobalt SS and shares the same engine trans suspension etc
Only the turbo had the launch control and no lift shift
Also these cars are as fantastic as people say but you should know a few things first
1. These cars are prone to electrical issues with the connector plugs and the grounds but theyre pretty ez to trace and fix. If you see anything weird thats usually the problem.
2. If you want a Cobalt SS in RWD, go to the Solstice/Sky or 2.0t Camaro/ATS platforms right next door. Same motor, same platform.
3. Both the LSJ and LNF motors can take up to 500whp sbe but will blow up if you fuck up the tune. Find someone who specifically tunes Ecotecs (theres lots of them).
4. The transmissions aren’t weak, per-se, but they don’t like to be fucked with. Take it easy and if you upgrade the turbo, plan on swapping the transmission too. Go with the F40 6MT.
5. Building a base cobalt isnt as dumb as it sounds. All the SS parts strap onto it and with new pistons/rods you can get as much power as you want.
With that in mind, Cobalts are weird and quirky but theyre overall a fantastic platform that punches way above its weight class.

in 11 years of owning 7 cobalt ss, never had any electrical issues, i live in canada in the rust belt btw, the camaro and ats had a totaly different and very shitty ltg engine, ecotec in rwd version are slow because its too heavy, transmissions are all weak especially the f40 from buicks, almost nothing from cobalt ss fits the base model, i literally swapped everything i could from a ss tc in a 07 g5 se, the car still sucked at the end, base engines and transmissions are very weak can hold 280-300hp tops, body and suspension is totaly different, control arms, hubs, brakes and sway bar doesnt fit, you need to swap everything since the axles from the ss are equal length and have different size hubs, balljoints from turbo cobalts are different size and doesnt exist in replacement parts, ss sc control arms fits but its even worst than the steel ones, shocks fits tho... i love turbo cobalts but good parts are getting very hard to find so i dont recommend getting one
I completely agree wee need to have a remake of the cobalt it'd takeover the market for the si more then likely with the chevys 4cyl it'd be a monster
im a proud owner of a clapped out 06 lsj G85 bone stock they need alot of work now since there getting old but there fun
Outstanding take on one of my favorite soon to be classic cars. I fell in love with is car when I saw the first commercial that teased its's relationship to the corvette. It's an amazing little car, very few people that owned one regret selling. You heard it here first, this will be highly collectible in about 10-15 years because they are becoming unobtanium. I'll second that, been trying to find a third 08-10 ss for the kiddo. When I bought my first one 5 years ago, they were cheap and easily found, now it's getting down to junkyard hunting.

I own a 2006 SS/SC. Ive been actively searching for the 2008 to 2010 Turbo SS and they are hard as hell to come by in good shape. I would love to find a good one soon!

Don't forget about the HHR . That is on the same platform also set a lap record. Its only about 300lbs heavier.😉

Not GM's first. The supercharged version came out with the Saturn Ion Redline a year before the cobalt ss
we must forget supercharged ones, the ss turbo is the only decent one
The sunfires and cavaliers were before the cobalt and g6 🤷♂️
@@retrocompaq5212 guess you don't know, but the LSJ SC engine is way better than the lnf turbo engine. Stock the turbo has like 30hp more, but modded the LSJ can make 250whp more than the lnf can. you can only get so much fuel with the direct injection, you can put 120# injectors into an LSJ.

Audi just brought back the inline 5 to with the RS3. I love the V70R and they are worth a fortune already because of the AWD and inline 5 package. Good idea, best of luck!

You wonder WHY they quit making and won't bring it back, well because the turbo model with the stage 1 tune and a couple of other basic mods you can make over 300 hp and essentially outrun the Corvette of that time plus the the Camaro lt1, , they can't have a cheap four banger outrunning THEIR flagship cars now can they. I mean how would you feel you just bought a $60-70,000 sports car and someone blows your doors off with a cheap four banger from the factory. It's sad because every car company selling tuner cars sell like hot cakes so instead of keeping up in that market they nixed it and Are loosing money. I have a big turbo Cobalt SS, nothing real crazy with basic supporting mods pushing around 380 HP and have sent plenty of big boys crying home to mamma lol
My ss supercharged has 320 on stage 3 2.7 pulley and still have cams and more up grades to go

@@DugEphresh lacked some refinement of the coupe model, seats has no lumbar support and position is higher, no sunroof, no rpd, body was exactly the same than a 2.4 model, rust issues was even worst in the sedans so they didnt last very long, i had one many years ago, not my fav
