I have a relative who has a 100% bought into all kinds of conspiracy theories and won't listen to anything I say, in an attempt to calm their fears. I have given up responding to them because it is pointless. If they go on a rant, I have to either watch them spiral or leave the room so I don't have to watch them spiral. Thank you for your channel and your willingness to do something kind.

I don’t know how Jono can literally go through the #2 most stressful event according to a public poll (divorce) and see so many fans turn on him and still have the strength to make it humorous (amazing emotion regulation skills by the way from the DBT handbook) and still take thirteen minutes to calmly confront the rumors! Also Emerald City ComicCon sounds kickbutt. Road trips will actually mess with your head and can confirm the remark about typos.
Please continue doing Mended Light and CinemaTherapy! It actually keeps me as well as others from wanting to stay in a place of self-loathing and utter disgust. People are so mean and it’s just not okay to take it so far as to remove Mended Light from public view. I mean there’s no excuse to disregard people’s feelings like this.

I have to admit, when I went to the actual game site, and the way that the game is structured to repeatedly click, then sending you to "survey" questions in between made it seem a little off to me, So then went back to the video and started to wonder. As someone who has had emails sent to people in my name saying "I am in a meeting and need you to go buy $500.00 worth of gift cards for me" and then had to try to track down everyone who got one to let them know it was not me, and comfort one or two who did do it, I can be suspicious if things are off. And those "little" things you mention are the red flags I was told to tell people to watch for, so put together, it's not surprising people insisted it was a fake. And I'm am someone who is usually the debunking/"no, no, that's a hoax/not true" camp. Perhaps if you do this again, announcing the contest is starting on Patreon/TH-cam the prior day (even if you don't give any details other than- "watch for our next exciting contest starting tomorrow") would make it easier for people to check what is going on? In these days of AI and cloning of accounts, there is going to be a lot of suspicion if things look off. And will share it to try to keep the vulnerable from being conned.
That's a great point! Alot of channels give some lead in or announcement of "coming attractions" or giveaways... I'm sure they'll do that next time (maybe for more than one video!) to avoid this "kerfuffle" as Jono put it, again 😂
Firstly: it makes me sad that this got out of control so quickly because your first contest was how I won a consoltation to get the help that I need and have made astronomical progress in the last year or so.

Yes! It's a rare thing where you can actually see people literally practicing what they preach in real situations, much less on an online platform. This is the only place I've seen that done
It is somewhat of a relief that the misinformed users called the whole situation a hack, rather than calling you, Mended Light the channel and you Jono, a scam artist. That would have been so much worse. Thank you for coming on and explaining what's really happened, and I'm happy you survived those nasty weather conditions on the road.

I saw the giveaway video in my feed but didnt watch it, saw the confirmation video but didnt watch it, and at that point I was super confused (Why the heck does he have to say it's not a deepfake?). I had no clue this drama was even occurring; that's insane. Major props for not only getting things back under control but also turning it into an excellent learning moment and discussion of confirmation bias.

As a fan of Cinema Therapy and a member of the Mended Light membership site, I can tell that the Jono we saw in the giveaway video was the purest, lovely, hyperactive goofball we can get in videos like this😆. He's a lot like this in the CT commercials and that bookshelf is also well known from those videos. Sorry buddy but those people who reported it as a AI Jono don't know you 😂.
I remember, that when the channel got hacked I've reached out to TH-cam and you on Twitter (X) and asked what to do to be able to help.

It was a really interesting phenomenon to watch (as a Sociologist) seeing the social contagion aspect of misinformation happen in real time. It gives you a good sense of how moral panics and social panics happen. It uses some our best human nature - the stuff that allows society to happen- against us. I agree, confirmation bias is a big part of this but it's also about this loss of shared reality. Durkheim talks about the importance of a collective conscious - we must have a shared world view to function as a society. What gets me is that the "post-truth" era amplified by these technological leaps, it is eroding collective conscious.

I didn't give my phone number, but my Wife did, and she said someone from ML called and she was suffering from a migraine and told them it wasn't a good time to talk, but the telemarketer kept pushing and it triggered her PTSD and she pushed back and told them AGAIN she had a migraine and couldn't talk. After the call she reported to ML the incident. So while it's not a scam, it was followed up with an aggressive marketing campaign. I love the ML & CT channels so I still support you, but just FYI about the follow-up telemarketing.

I'm so sorry to hear that you (and everyone else connected to these two channels) had to go through that! It sounds incredibly stressful. I wondered at first, but I recognized the bookshelf. (I'm a Librarian. I recognize many of those books.) With a lot of these kinds of things, I go to the source. In this case, I'd go check the websites to see if it's mentioned there.

One thing that seems odd to me that *I* would've done if I'd actually watched the comments for the giveaway, is that I'd have ran over to the CT's Discord server to find out if the channel *had* been hacked or not. Because, even if hackers had gotten control of the YT channels, the discord server has a full staff of mods and admins to keep it safe, and would certainly know for a fact if the channel had actually been hacked or not.
Also, that's kinda literally the reason I joined the discord server. I like to follow my fave content creators on more than one medium, just in case something *does* happen, then I can ask. And generally just to keep up-to-date.
That's also why I'd asked in a live Q&A with you and your wife, if Mended Light had a discord server too.
Anyway, wow. That was a wild journey, LOL! And I am glad you could sort it out before any damage was done. And that you could turn this into a topic for Mended Light, that's great too!

Confirmation bias is why I find the tv show "The Traitors" equal parts fascinating AND a bit depressing. It's basically all that that "reality game" relies upon.
But also, Cinema Therapy is coming as speakers at Emerald City Comic Con?!?! 🤩 I've thought about going to it before, but haven't ever done so. That might actually get me to go this year! 😃 It's been at least 7 years since the last time I attended a con, and that had been all way down in Orlando!

Then again, it was not the first time I saw ppl freaking out over sth. possibly being Ai generated and me shaking my head cause ppl underestimate how much effort that stuff thankfully still takes nowadays to get done.

The whole "Fake news" drama was already bad enough. Now it's AI. This is what happens when you treat reality in disrespectful manner and then proceed to roll out disrespectful tools to general public which is in the mids of all sorts of crisis and by no means emotionally regulated enough to handle any of this well. Also that it's technology that was instantly adapted and abused by the pornography industry should have been all the necessary warning you'd need to know this all is a terrible idea.
At first, I completely believed the giveaway. I clicked on the link and went to the comment section to talk about how excited I was. Then I read the top comment that was nitpicking every single detail and "proving" that it was deep faked and I got nervous. I rewatched the video, and I could see where they were coming from, but it seemed so real to me. When Jono said that the last giveaway was still up on the chanel though, I immediately looked for it and when I found it that was proof enough for me to keep playing. After a bit I caught the last little bit of the live he made, and I went down to defend Jono in the origional video. That was such a big thing, but I'm glad it ended well!
This is a very important topic that I dont think enough people talk about. Content creation is fuelled by controversy, and too many people feed it, and their viewers feel like they need to adhere to that point of view. Then they get more content or voices confirming that view, and it grows into strong beliefs. It angered me as a thing that divided my family, and it scares me as an international phenomenon...
Agree on all counts. That's a big reason why, when we address controversies here, it's an attempt to diffuse them.

That topic jzst gave me such a headache. I had a complete panic attack and meltdown some days ago, not because of this but because the technology is on its way to devide us even further and never trust anyone or anything. As a former journalist, people just ignoring evidence are so scary to me. I quit my job because I didn't have the nerve and it made me ill but I still believe in the importance and responsibility, but the whole system (deadline pressure, less and less people, no time for double-checking) makes it so hard to live up to that. And now deepfake etc ... I'm so, so scared. Internet is such an opportunity and I learn so much listening to people and their diverse experiences, but lately I just want to curl up and shut out the World

Unfortunately, this seems to be what happens when "the quiet guy" presents more "big energy" than usual in a video: people assume something's amiss. I hope this doesn't scare you away from doing the occasional "big" gestures in the future, because that side of you is fun, too! We love professional, serious Jono and goofy, energetic Jono equally, and I imagine even Internet Dads need to hear that now and then.

Ive been in that situation on a road trip where something was blowing up real fast, and I agree it is stressful, esp if maybe youre in a spot with poor data, and cant react in the moment.
I can't recall, was the giveaway mentioned prior to Monday? I knew there was a contest last year so i wasnt surprised, but im wondering if maybe next year on the content videos, the closing could have "stay tuned next monday about our big giveaway!"
This is very scary and the AI stuff is getting too good too fast and there aren’t any rules or laws set to keep it under control, and then you have politicians and corrupt people who will definitely take advantage of this… Anyway, that’s a side thought but I’m so sorry this happened to you guys :/ That’s so stressful, but love how it led to an important topic to talk about and that you connected it to therapy and how we all need to question things, check our thoughts and biases, self-reflect, and aim to grow.

Personally I am so skeptical these days because so many things and people have been revealed to be fake and scammers that, lol, I'm definitely having trust issues. But, just as on Face Book, I would have reported it to the channel (or page) owner first to let them deal with it.
I don't think we have to be afraid of technology. What we NEED to be cautious about is how quickly we just believe everything. Because if we're only able to take a moment, take a breath and realize it's fake, then the technology used in a bad way won't have any lasting repercussions. I'm glad this issue got solved Jono, I'm just sorry you had to have a mini crisis before that was accomplished!
Yes, exactly! This is precisely the problem. We have AI now and we cannot stop it. We must learn how to detect when something is AI and when something isn't, and also learn to not jump to conclusions. Part of learning how to detect AI is learning where it's current limits are. I am more able to tell if something is real if I know what the limits of AI are - what AI currently cannot do. And this ultimately requires better computer literacy in general.

I know when I watched the video in question that kicked off the entire debacle I noticed that the contrasting between the distal-most edges of your shirt, the shelves in the background, and the books on said shelves made it look like you were an additional video layer that was overlaid onto an IMAGE of your bookshelf, but after rewatching it a few times I did notice that while it *looked* that way it actually wasn't, and did not report it despite the comment section raging to that effect.
What a nightmare! I can't even imagine what I would do if this happened to me. It's a terrible story. So happy that it's over and all is well now.

Wasn't aware of the scandal or that other people actually read comments and take action that sometimes result in consequences. Interesting. Imagine if we could do some good in the world with that. As a guy who is pretty aware of deepfake visuals & online scammery, I think we can acknowledge that the video was tonally different from the average mended light vid, so i guess in therapeutic fashion, I think it totally makes sense that people's feeling of distrust were going off. combine that with an unusual site interface, and maybe not tech savvy audience wanting to look out for each other, communication attempts to the creator might have been wiser than immediate reporting. like if you actually watched the whole video, you'd think "ok this is real, but a casual acknowledgement and side-humor would off-set the prompter" other parties would also have acknowledged that mended light as a foundation has been around for a while and checking the main site would have shown alignment with the new video and the new giveaway. the info submission & foreign link clicking does make it seem more sus understandably
I have multiple relatives who are as confident in their conclusions as they are quick to jump to them. To be blunt, it's so hard to deal with that it's been a majorly contributing factor to my losing desire to spend time with those family members. The only thing that can make talking to someone as unappealing as them being rude is when you feel like you're talking to a brick wall
As someone super interested in conspiracy theorist and cult mechanics I'm not surprised, as a random human who just watches Mended Light, I am waking up to this and thinking WHAT? Of all the things and people to suspect deep fakes and conspiracy from? Mended Light? Living in this day and age is while AF not going to lie 😅

There is a lesson here about the merits of so-called "community," especially when you get into a tail-wagging-dog situation in which viewership gets to control what you're doing. Traditional broadcasting has code of conduct guidelines that include such things as when to leave the mic on and when to not give a platform to the call-ins.
I did not think AI Deepfakes could advance this quickly!

It's so scary that it's so hard to know what is true now because of how good AI is getting. It's eroding trust and community faster than ever because of that too which is just heartbreaking.

To be honest, the original announcement had me suspicious. And the attempts of fixing it didn't make it better 😂.

To be fair to those who were concerned, a comment saying "this is real, we haven't been hacked" is almost certainly something a hacker would do if they had hacked you...if they'd had access to your account to upload an AI vid, they could certainly respond to comments too and no viewer could know for sure that it was you or not especially once the seed of doubt had been cast in their minds. A live stream/video was a good response because that's a much better way to verify your identity. A really unfortunate situation all-in-all, I'm glad it got straightened out...and sad I missed the window for the competition lol
Personally, I find videos that are “different” aren’t deep fakes, it’s because something went wrong between the filming, editing and upload process (where the creator either didn’t have time or had little desire to fix it). The other reason I assumed it was questionable editing (and not deep faked) is because there had been previous sweepstakes before, I remember a few on Cinema Therapy with different prizes. If I were suspicious, I’d also look for more information on the creators different social media accounts and/or ask them about the sweepstakes.

People look for drama because they are usually paranoid in their own life. Don't let your fear control you. People make up fake memes, and fake deep fake videos, and fake posts. It is sad that people fall for it. Stay positive and stay critical. Do not let fear rule!
As a person who has had to help stop hackers and have had people deep fake old people into debt I don't believe it's ever bad to be cautious about scams. But yeah the over reaction was a bit much.
There were two main issues here imo: The first is that a lot of CT viewers don't watch ML content, and there is a noticeable audio and video quality different between the sets that they aren't used to; and once people think you're hacked on the internet, it's very hard to prove otherwise since if they're still "in" then they can say whatever they want as the "source". But I agree that friendly fire is a terrible thing to be hit by. Making a comment questioning the validity is one thing, but jumping into every discussion stating for a fact without confirmation is another. This is a very human and understandable response in my eyes, but it's still a shame it went down such a torch burning route even if it had good intentions

My opinion might not matter in this as I wasn‘t part of it. But in my opinion, the danger to people getting scammed is more severe here than the channel staying up…
I'm glad I missed all of this until after it was over. It's hard, because AI's are getting better, sometimes at an alarming rate, and we don't always know how to evaluate this kind of claim.

Someone will make a legitimate comment, and either it’s a little more verbose than people like, or it has typos, or it sounds a bit academic in tone, and people spam it with replies like “this is a bot”, “I just looked through the account history and they’re definitely a bot, because ”. And the person just replies like “I’m not a bot. Please stop saying I’m a bot.”
And I’m looking at this thinking that nothing about this sounds like AI to me. This person’s account looks completely normal, and everyone is just seeing what they want to see because they either disagreed with the person or believed the first person to call them a bot.
And in that case, it’s a little extra ridiculous if a comment online sounds like a bot, because of course they do. Why do you think Reddit locked down their APIs? Because AI was being trained on it and they wanted a cut of the AI money.

I'm gonna be honest, TH-cam has a nasty tendency to be taken advantage of, constantly plagued by impersonation and other forms of scam artists. Whenever there's a giveaway contest I've been always skeptical, but the presence of AI deepfakes may have just pushed me towards the trigger-happy "yep this is fake" claims. The fact that the video leads towards an external website that contains survey questions had me on full alert. The giveaway/charity hasn't been made public before the video itself, it's been done on such short notice too that you can't help but wonder. These are all the red flags that I've been always looking for, and so far this line of thought has kept me out of harm's way.
Undeniably though I should've stopped to think. I'm fairly sure that me and many other people wouldn't have been so quick to judge had we stopped to think. But perhaps there's another lesson to be learnt here, perhaps the announcer could've done more to avoid this situation. But with all that said, I know how it feels to be wronged like this, it is very frustrating and hurtful. I don't wish for something like that to happen to anyone, and I wish you the best of luck with your foundation. You're doing a lot of good and I think you should be proud of it.
Still feels weird when Max headroom pops up somewhere randomly. I'm part of the generation that experienced him...& were surreally impressed.

1 -because it sounds suspicious and unconvincing to people who are putting their trust in you
and 2 - because Im human and flawed. like every single other man woman and child on the planet is flawed and NO ONE is perfect which I know includes me
However knowing that cognitively and feeling it emotionally are two VERY different things so just to be safe where I cant tap into that "Im aware of my flaws on a sensory level" i never say Im certain unless I am at that moment in time or im right because...im not I just say things to the best of my ability with what I have learned and have at hand at the time but like you said Jono we are always learning

As a friendly suggestion, maybe take this to mean that you need a better recording setup. I've previously found some of the mended light videos hard to watch because of audio/image sync issues/choppiness. It's too bad to have a good message ruined by poor video quality.
I do think a big part was that the audio sounds robotic which does bring AI to mind. Also the giveaway site has a very similar style to fake prize website, so I could see how people put two and two together. I personally didn't see anything until the it's real videos, but I can see how people got there.

Thats so odd. I was watching a documentary on Netflix when this video came up. Or my ohone alerted me it came up..anyway. It was about actual hackers that ruined a guys life but the point is...I don't know why this coincidentally came into my life at the same time but it's a really good lesson. I feel like human connection is going to be the only thing that can save us from stuff like this. Recognising 'oh wow I'm at an 11...maybe I should take this down to a 2 before reacting. What do I know about this person? Who can I talk to that might know more?' Like you said all well that ends well but people have been hurt by assumptions like this. Romcoms are built on it. Stay safe. Talk to your neighbours. Pat a dog. Stroke a plushie. Youre doing fine.
