THANK YOU FOR SHARING MY FRIEND, I PAINTED MY DASH IN MY 1949 CHEV WITH RATTLE CAN EVERY ONE LOVED IT, YOU ARE RIGHT IT CAN BE DONE AND DONE RIGHT........................................
Thank you for the video. I have been considering painting a few things, and specifically rattle can as I am a cheap ass. I will reference it on my channel when I get down to it. I also visit Missouri every year for my fix of America. Today I am trying to buy a Satin black 92 Caprice Wagon. Perfect place for lace.
Heck yeah ! That would look great on that wagon, and it’s a classic to boot ! If you do that let me know how it turns out . I’m picturing wire wheels on that wagon to tie it all together. Good luck on your hunt.
I remember my older brother's 58 Olds having a lace job. I have a fun 2011 HHR that is just a daily runner. Boring. Not for long. Thank you for this very clear video.
You’re welcome . I’d like to know how it turns out. Any vehicle can turn hot rod with just the right look . Glad you like the video and happy it was a help to you . 👍🏽
People take What Ever hum-drum Daily driver add a set of Aftermarket wheels & a Spray job. & for Doubters or Practicers, get a spare hood separately & paint that as many times as it takes for your proper End result. & If Its a Work-of-ART Keep the separate hood when you sell the Beater. Bcz Nothing says U cant't Mount the Hood L8tr On a wall For an "Off-the-Wall" Uniqueness to it.
I stoped the video after 5 minutes..... just to say the way you explain how things are going to be done is excellent. hope to see more videos. Thanks for the video enjoyed it.
Ken Sendelofski Thank you and I’m glad that you liked the video. I’m still building the truck but I will be posting a few other things here soon. Thanks again .
Sounds good to me. I’m thinking of doing a 68 GMC , with the lace on the roof . It works really well on vehicles with the drip rails , because the can act as guides for the layout.
Robert Febur Thank you . That’s exactly what I was going for. Basically I was trying to mimic those real bad ass custom paint jobs that you see on a lot of 62-64 Impalas . Thanks again.
Patina Code Just a little tip, if you’re doing a large area (like a roof), you can use low tack spray craft glue to hold down the lace. Just spray the back of the lace and carefully lay it out, and of course you should still tape the edges. This keeps overspray from being able to blow up under the lace as easily. Then once the paint is dry, wipe off any residue with a damp rag (most of the adhesives are water based, Elmer’s glue even makes one). All the same procedures you used would work even on large panels. Cheers!
Great luck to you bro ! Just take your time and pay attention to every thing you’re doing and it will come out just as you want it . Let me know how it turns out. 🤘🏽🤘🏽
awesome , I am going to do some lace paint on 1950 mercury, I have never done this with cans. I have never laced. you are awesome my man, when it comes time I will be looking for advice. gotta wait for winter to go.
Dwain Baker Thank you . No problem I’ll help you in any way that I can. Thanks for the support. The one thing that I can tell you right now that may help you later , is to get the cheapest spray paint , an old piece of metal and cut you some sample pieces of lace . Lay everything out and prep it as you would when you actually do the job and practice with that. Get the feel for it and an idea on how it’s going to work out for you.
As my whole car needs a DIY make over I was contemplating doing my bonnet, roof and boot with the lace design. My bonnet though has indents where it Leeds to the scoop? How would I keep the lace down as the bonnet isn't flat like my roof would be.
To follow contour use small pieces of rolled tape to hold lace down. Place the tape in a spot on the lace that the paint won’t be transferring through. It’s a process , but worth it in the end.
@@PatinaCode cheers, that will come in handy. I've been wanting to do the lace job for a while but always forget about so I'm glad TH-cam recommend the video as a nice reminder while I'm actually getting ready to paint the car.
I've been seriously considering trying this very technique to paint my '75 Harley tins for a budget makeover. I knew the basics of the process, but I'm figuring out just how simple it can be without paying $1-$5k for itty to be done. Thanks for the extra boost I needed to do this myself. I'll be checking out your other works. Really cool stuff!
Go for it dude did my 82 HD a couple years ago and it's a lot easier than you'd think. Just be sure to lightly spay over the lace and not saturate it (like he says in the video). If you saturate the lace, it'll leave a scale texture that's a pain to fix.

How long do you let the paint dry before taping? And what's your opinion on using a 3m spray adhesive on the lace? To hold it in place. It's a shame you didn't showcase the entire final product.
It depends on the temperature and humidity at the time of the painting. The paint has to cure before you can apply tape. There’s a difference between dry and cured. Cured mans that the paint is hard , and when it’s hard you can apply the tape and pull it off without worrying about pulling up the paint. With spray paint it’s usually 48 hours to cure. Again , that depends on the outside temperature and humidity. You can apply tape to the very ends of your lace . The parts that’s not getting painted, I just laird the lace over the roof and then shot the silver and as soon as I sat the can down I pulled the lace off. I’m doing another lace job on the current truck that I’m building and I’ll do a complete step by step on the roof .
Sal Canales Sorry it took so long to reply. It’s holding up just fine. Thanks by the way. Check out the latest video I just put up to see it in action. Once the truck is completely finished I’ll do a final walk around on it. Thanks again.
I love this video, exactly what I was looking for! Would you recommend doing anything different if I was doing this on a fiberglass welding helmet? Would the paint be the same?
Sam Brown Thanks is glad that the video was a help to you. The only thing that you would need to do is be sure that the paint that you’re going to use is compatible with fiberglass. The biggest thing would be to scuff the surface with a 600 or 800 grit sand paper to rough it up a little bit so that the paint would adhere better . Also be sure to wipe it down really well between each paint coating, plastic and fiberglass attract dust due to static. If you’re wanting to use Rust Oleum and Dupli Color as I did , they both work on fiberglass .
Patina Code Thank you for the advice! If my project turns out good I’ll post a pic, if you don’t see a pic you know what happened lol. Thank you again!
Sam Brown If you take your time , then it’s going to turn out just fine. Don’t rush to finish , if you mess up , because of rushing and have to start over again , then that means that it just took you twice as long to do one job. You’re welcome and good luck.
