  • Join us as we explore the beautiful city of Bitola here in sunny Macedonia 🇲🇰
    We checked out the windy streets of the old bazaar (one of our favourites in the balkans) then headed to the shirok sokak which is the main pedestrian walking street in Bitola and always brimming with life every hour of the day.
    We spent quite a bit of time wandering around the green Market or covered market and got some halva aswell as a grape drink which is basically liquid crack, we got a few more bits including some dried fruits from a lovely lady and met many friendly locals all willing to chat.
    Macedonia is becoming one of our all time favourites it's really shining I don't get why there are no tourists here there missing out on so much, oh well more for us to enjoy! 🇲🇰🇲🇰🇲🇰

    Bro, I have to agree with 'ryermkd' that conversation with the chap at the market was natural. I think you made his day actually. When he mentioned London, he was asking if you were from there. The peppers in the bottles were pickled in brine and were hot. His paprika was the best quality and perfect for dipping 'kebabchina' in and other bbq meat. Those little roasted nut type things you tried in the market were roasted chickpeas. I'm so envious of you now; I haven't been since 2019.

    Are you guys part Macedonian by any chance? You seemed to be understanding the shop keepers to a certain extent! Especially the guy at 13min, I was impressed as a Canadian with Macedonian roots myself. It's actually a very easy language to learn is largely phonetic in spelling, but perhaps that's due to me knowing the basics as a child so it was easier for me to pick up.

      Modern Greece is by no means related either genetically or culturally to the ancient cosmos and the people who once occupied this land. The modern Greeks are just an intermixture of Balkan tribes (Albanians/Arvanites, Slavs, Vlachs) which in the process of time mingled with northern Africans, Armenians and other tribes of Anatolia, not to mention the francs and the venetians who were also dominantly present in this land.” THE SOCIO-CULTURAL ROOTS OF THE Greek ECONOMIC CRISIS Dimitris Epikouris (a Greek)

    The DNA profiles of Slav Macedonians- inhabitants of North Macedonian show that they have Slavic, Greek and Paleobalkan/local DNA.Their language is Slavic as well as their culture. Therefore they don't have anything common with Phillip II and Alexander the Great, who spoke Greek, wrote in Greek and their culture was Greek. So this country called North Macedonia culturally is allien to the Ancient Macedonia, their culture is Slavic.

    • @mellake7052
      @mellake7052 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      😂 No culture is the same as any culture in antiquity. No place, peoples, language or cultures remain frozen in time for thousands of years. The notion is ludicrous.
      Besides, the majority of the population of modern Greece is descended form Christian Albanians (the Muslim Albanians were driven out or murdered), Vlachs, "Slavs", Roma and Turks (and many more) so applying your logic, these people are "culturally alien" to ancient Greece. Most are strongly hellenised today. And the northern part of Macedonia, not that long ago in terms of human history, was joined to the southern part before it was divided after the Balkan Wars of 1912/1913.

    • @johnsinger1887
      @johnsinger1887 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mellake7052 Modern Greek is the continuation of Ancient Greek, while Slavic languages are different to ancient Greek. Recent DNA studies from Harvard geneticist Iosif Lazaridis published in ''Nature '' magazine , prove that modern Greeks have a big % of the same DNA as Minoans and Mycenaeans (Genetic origins of the Minoans and Mycenaeans, 2017). No serious scientist disputed these findings yet. So your argument about modern Greeks being Christian Albanians is false.

    • @mellake7052
      @mellake7052 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@johnsinger1887 Nothing false at all, unless you're calling Greek academics liars. Read Greek professors such as Professor M Efthimiou and you'll learn that around 40% of the population of Greece (the former Morea) was of Albanian roots at the time this nation was created by the west (1832) [Travellers and observers state it was as high as 60% but let's stick to academia.] The remainder were largely "Slavs", Vlachs, Roma and Turks, though a form of Greek was spoken by some due to the continuation through the church, as that was the only church language at the time.
      In that biased genetics "study", the mostly Greek Americans who conducted it (many times over until they achieved results they were aiming for) have conceded that they did not observe proper methodology, aside from the fact that their conclusions were just that - conclusions - and not facts. Besides, the ethnicity of those from whom the ancient matter was taken can never be known.
      The Slavonic language has been spoken in Greece and in particular, all of Salonika, (which until 1913 was part of Macedonia, never previously part of Greece) since well before the 'Cyril and Methodius, the Apostles to the Slavs' spread Slavonic literacy as far as present-day Czechia. When "Greece" was created, the authorities removed the Slavonic toponyms (though some still remain in the south) and replaced them with ancient Greek names as suggested by the Bavarian and English creators. They later forcibly changed all the people's names, not just toponyms to give the illusion of continuity.
      Slavonic, as spoken in Macedonia, including the part taken by Greece after the Balkan Wars, retains some Homeric vocabulary, though the people adopted the Slavonic tongue - as many cultures have done throughout history. Just like the Mexicans speak Spanish but they are neither Spanish, nor even European.
      But you are partially correct in your first comment - Macedonians do share genetic commonalities with mainland Greeks (islander Greeks are quite different) pointing to the fact they are similar peoples who are indigenous to the region but who, linguistically and culturally, developed differently over the centuries.
      But keep in mind that when these companies state the customers ethnicity, it is not ethnicity at all as ethnicity is a social construct and no DNA test can ever determine that. The tests reveal which region of peoples the customer shares the most DNA with. Check the ethnicity map for the My Heritage Macedonia page and you will see that over 80% of the population shares genetic DNA with those in Greece and Albania (keeping in mind that they don't literally mean ethnicity but rather, region.
      The Greek language has been created to fit in with the ancient Hellenes myth concocted by Droysen and Co.
      And I'm afraid modern Greek is an invented language which has been experimented with so much that it was not standardized until 1976.

      @@mellake7052 ''Modern Greeks resemble the Mycenaeans, but with some additional dilution of the early Neolithic
      ancestry''. This is what the ground-breaking study of Iosif Lazaridis is saying (and he is Greek , born and raised in Kavala, not Greek-American as you say). The majority of the writters of this study are non Greeks (even two Turks in the study) so again you are caught saying false things. People who are familiar with science know that 99,9% of scientist can't get a study published in ''Nature'' and ''Science'' magazines, which have the biggest impact factors in the world.They are the ''creme de la creme '' of science. I regard as facts things which have to do with countable and material things and not theories and DNA is a material thing. No scientists, even Slavs , have disputed with scientific facts this study yet. So it is very valid and even if you say tons of lies ,it's easy to uncover your lies. Many Greek academics (just like English , German etc) say silly things , this is not an argument really.Theories are not important, only science is. Greek was not an artificial language because even simple people wrote and spoke in Greek like the ''Makriyannis memoirs ''. There are countless of books written in Greek during the ottoman empire by simple people. Mexicans speak Spanish because they were conquered by the Spanish, while ancient Macedonians were never conquered by Athens or Sparta. They spoke and wrote in Greek bc they were Greeks too. No matter how many falsehoods you bring the scientific community regard modern Greeks racially and culturally as the continuation of ancient Greeks. Only poor Slav nationalists like you try with lies to change history , but they fail miserably.Accept the truth and you will feel better.

    Macedonia is a historic region with it's center in Greece. This is Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, today known as Northern Macedonia. This is a country with stolen identity. Citizens consist of Orthodox Christian Slavs and Muslim Albanians. No Greek there, but they are still using false Hellenistric identity as the basis of ther statehood because if they tried anything else, the country would disintegrate into Christian and Muslim parts.
