- The republic of Macedonia in the south of the Balkan peninsula is a young state with a rich and diverse history. Macedonia is known for its good tobacco and its red pepper specialities. Ilinka Glavevska is one of the last farmers to grow the old Bukovo pepper type and uses it to make the traditional Bukovski piper spice.

I have tried, I love red pepper and paprika, but something spoils it, probably the eggplant.
@none Depends of personal taste. Someone loves with eggplants, someone doesn’t. Someone loves with chilli, a dash with tomatoes, but the original is only with red peppers. It should be fried enough.
It could be the eggplants, but I think the most probably not well sealed enough or poorly preserved.
It is interesting that the ladies are creating strings of peppers to dry & preserve and have a similar manner preserving chilies aka peppers. My father is from New Mexico-USA-of colonial descent and the long lived tradition was to preserve New Mexico varieties of chile: Chimayo & Espanola by creating ristras. My father taught me how to hand tie the red chiles on string. Like these ladies, we tied many ristras of the red chiles to dry and preserve. We hung the ristras from the roof edge, not as decoration but for food.
That's really interesting, Betsy. Someone else here made a similar comment about "ristras" in Spanish cuisine. Food unites us!

I think you can only blame the parents who dont let her or teach her, there was a phrase in the beginning: grandma is in charge and cooks for everyone. So I guess that's it, problem in duty distribution.
@@BaibaVulgaris agreed. unfortunately this is quite a common problem in the balkans, where grandmas - out of love - want to do everything for everyone, and end up turning rest of family in lazy entitled brats who dont respect them because they think it's normal. tho you know, when one is an adult, one should figure out to help. it's not a matter of upbringing anymore, it's matter of basic propriety, i would think at least.

Once you are 16/18 you are responsible for what you do or do not do, and this woman is choosing the easy way out

What a delightful film. Illinka seems like a great lady, I do hope she succeeds in promoting the old type of pepper and finding someone to continue her work on the farm. And the food looks absolutely delicious! Would have loved to try it.

Can't quite believe how self-centered and work-shy granddaughter Anita is. I would give anything to have either of my darling grandmothers back for an afternoon but she says, "Why should I cook? Why should I work? My grandmother can do it all."

Pardon the awful username, I’m yet another Macedonian Ohioan. My family moved to Akron when I was 7. I grew up in a small village outside of Skopje. I remember we grew peppers in the field behind the house, our neighbors had a cherry tree and grew cabbages and other vegetables. This video was so nostalgic and it’s awesome to meet people that have something in common.

Love this ..... I found it so interesting! I know very little about the region.... the lifestyle resonates with me.... as I can see similarities to the Hungarian Heritage. (Different... yet somehow similar!)....
In 2020 Anita has probably got married and has a child or 2, she's probably travelling the region trying to sell the produce that her Grandma makes.. in meantime Grandma also looks after her children as Anita is doing sales rep.

Now i´m curious. Babuskas are always the best ppl you can find, in any country. In Moldova me and my mate ran into a group of Macedonian grandma´s on a holiday and they gave us candy and tried to promote their daughters to us ("She is an animal doctor! You can have all dogs u want!"). They where amazing. Kept the package of the Kavabon as a reminder.

However, the people of Macedonia are indigenous to that region for thousands of years, compared to the Tatars and pure Slavs. No Serb or Bulgarian can claim that the Macedonians belong to their nation. It would be a big fallacy to do so, just because they speak a similar Slavic idiom. Language is merely a tool and it does not define a nation. Linguists have been confirming this for decades. Ethnically, the Serbs and Bulgarians are very different. So are modern Greeks.

Croatian generally isn't that good (commercial ones, homemade is good everywhere). I'm a Croat, but Macedonian is the best in my opinion. "Mama's" brand is the best, try that one if you find it.
If you can try homemade sometimes, difference is huge.
