    This is Mark's 1988 Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth
    This is the RWD model equipped with the legendary 2 litre cosworth motor.
    The Sierra Sapphire is a driver's car. Suspension was essentially the same as the 2 door series 1 with some minor changes in geometry to suit a less aggressive driving style and favour ride over handling. Many experienced Ford guys will tell you these 4 doors are the best to drive of all the Cosworth powered Sierras. Which is a massive call considering the original 2 door Cosworth is such an iconic car!
    The "Sapphire" badge is a UK thing. All the LHD ones are just known as "4 door Sierra RS Cosworths". The "Sapphire" badge basically means Ghia trim. That's power rear windows and air conditioning. Maybe nicer cloth on the factory Recaro seats too [?].

    In the UK at least the "Sapphire" badge just meant it was a four-door saloon body style, rather than hatchback or estate.

    • @K2edg
      @K2edg 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Grunge Initm8 No, just means four door saloon...... Ford uk had three different body types of mk2 Sierra in production at the same time (5 door, 4door and Estate) Sapphire was just a name for the body type...... all three body styles had the 1.6-Ghia models but the sapphire was chosen for the Cosworth and the 5 door got the XR treatment (XR was one down from the RS)

      @dungareesareforfools 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@K2edg No, the Ghia only came in 2.0 and 2.8 / 2.9 (estate only) models. I know because I was looking to buy a 1.6 Ghia years ago when my insurance was expensive, and I couldn't - I ended up having to pay a lot to insure a 2.0 injection.

    I was watching some of the old Aussie Touring Cars on TH-cam, the Sierra Cosworth and the "Godzilla" Skyline were brutal.
    I love the Sierra's wild and lairy attitude and the Skyline's menacing presence.

    Very nice Cossie and my 88 Saph is my favourite out of my collection of Fords. There was a big difference between the standard Sierra’s and the Cosworth’s. First the Cossies had a different floor pan to accommodate the bigger T5 gearbox. Also the pillars were filled with a resin for extra strength and the shell was strengthened over the standard Sierra to take the extra power/torque of the YB engine. This is where Ford failed in the 3 door as it used to flex a lot causing stress cracks in the front end, especially around the strut towers. The cars was designed to race and the road cars were a homologation special ( min 7000 had to be made) to allow it to be raced in touring cars.

      the cosworth was the one with the red (or blue later) rocker covers. the ONLY Sierras (in the UK) that came with Factory turbos were the Cosworths and the 1.8 Turbodiesels (to my knowledge, in my 10 years at a ford dealership)

    Bloody nice Sapph there mate, one of my favourite colours on this model. The vents are not standard on a 2wd as stated previously but a nice addition, they look right.
    The wheels look spot on too, would be my choice.
    I previously owned 2 in the 90's and sold my 3rd Sapph Cosworth about 3yrs ago and regretting it since.
    Great cars these. Enjoy it...

    Basically, they start off as a 4 door Ghia ( thats why they all had a sunroof), then with the Cosworth turbo engine,Mustang ( and many more models) gearbox, uprated diff,springs & suspension mods,and brakes.

    The saph cos is a legend back here in the UK it's totally different from the standard sierra sapphire. The suspension diff prop gear box trim interior etc the YB is what it's all about. I had four escort rs turbos but never a cosy unfortunately. When I could afford one back in the day I bought a 400bhp Pulsar Gtir which I loved but do regret not getting one. The prices now are sky high easy 30k plus for a good one saying that the rs turbos are a fortune too........ basically anything RS is mega 👍

    So here’s the difference between a Sierra Sapphire Cosworth and the Sierra Sapphire 2.0 GLX
    The Cosworth has a full exterior kit, front bumper has different fog light placement and is more aerodynamic and slightly more aggressive than the standard Sierra ones, the rear bumper is smoother as well, the main thing is they’re colour coded a lot of standard trim Sierras weren’t and even had black plastic cladding on the lower side of the doors effectively making them two tone in colour, of course the rear spoiler and the dual bonnet vents is customary to the Cosworth model and the black lip on it is a call back to the previous Sierra Cosworth with the whale tail
    The engine as you said is different too, it’s based on the standard Ford Sierra 2 litre twin cam 16 valve cast iron block but the top end has been completely redone by Cosworth and of course the T3 turbo from Garrett, a misconception is that you can fit standard Sierra 2.0 Twin Cam parts to this motor but that’s a myth, Ford recommended use of Bosch spark plugs, the air filter was designed specifically for the Cosworth YB engine to allow more airflow to aid the turbo but also to remedy an old issue, the standard non Cosworth engine was prone to overheating so it made sense that with the addition of a Turbocharger that the air filter and water pump was updated as well as the radiator
    Gearbox is definitely different from the standard Sierra it’s a Borg Worner unit, still a 5 speed manual box but that’s the only common thing a GLX’s box and the Cosworth box have in common, it wasn’t the most solid thing in the world many Cosworth owners reported that earlier cars had issues with the synchro mesh in 3rd gear failing
    Interior is the exact same bar a few differences from any other Sierra Sapphire you’d see, the Recaro seats which later became leather ones in the 4x4 variant, the steering wheel which became 4 spoke in the 4x4 version, and the stereo displaying the vehicles registration plate are all the unique attributes of the Sierra Cosworths interior but other than them 3 things it’s basically all the same
    Overall it was at the heart of it and reputation and performance aside a top of line high spec Sierra Sapphire, the engine was the same layout as the base models 2 litre it just had top of the range parts fitted as well as the turbo and Cosworths motorsport focused top end, the exterior of the Cossie was slightly changed and colour coded with a spoiler and bonnet vents added on but nothing too dramatic unlike its 3 door predecessor it really did have an almost sleeper standard look to it but you could just tell it was a Cossie version thanks to the subtle alterations made around the car, and the interior really didn’t shout out the word “high performance” considering it was mostly unchanged from the standard car
    But it’s one of those cars that’s just right in every way, it’s not too exciting to look at but it’s not anywhere near boring neither, it’s not the fastest thing out there but it’s even by today still very rapid from standard, and it was drivers focused car that you could have bags of fun with when you wanted to but it was also a smooth 4 door saloon to take the family out in if you needed it too
