- This is the breadfruit season. During the July-August season, some specific vegetables and fruits such as Durian, Rambutan, Mangosteen, Gaduguda, (Lanzone) and Donga (sour apples) are in plenty in Sri Lanka. But all these fruits are heaty fruits. Some people do not eat them a lot because of this reason. Our ancestors knew that the heat effect would be reduced when breadfruit was cooked or eaten with coconut milk or freshly grated coconuts. So they indulged in eating lots of breadfruit for its season.
When breadfruit becomes mature, they start to ripen within one or two days. So I plucked some mature breadfruits in plenty this time. In a breadfruit tree that has grown on its own in the ancestral house garden, there were branches laden with breadfruits. Since it was a newly rooted breadfruit tree, the tree was laden with breadfruits, which I plucked in the evening.
For the next day's lunch, I prepared to cook a breadfruit curry. Since the breadfruits were fresh, I decided to ask my brother to make his special spicy breadfruit peel fry, as he is very skilled at making it. With that in mind, I cut the breadfruit skin into thicker pieces. My brother creates this delicious fry by frying the breadfruit peels with ghee and adding dried shrimps. As a complement to that, I also made fish red curry, carrot sambal, and a green mallum (a type of mixed green stir-fry). To complete the lunch menu, it's essential to cook the breadfruit curry with thick coconut milk to enhance its flavour. I added a handful of purple bird's eye chillies and some spinach leaves to enhance the deliciousness of the breadfruit curry. When the lunch table is filled with a diverse array of delicious dishes, it means that each of those dishes is filled with the necessary nutrients for our bodies, while at the same time filling our minds with happiness. My ultimate joy every day is also to bring happiness to my grandmother's and brother's minds as well.

මේ දෙල් කාලෙ. මේ කාලෙට අනිවාර්යෙන්ම හැදෙන එලවලු පලතුරු වර්ග ටිකක් තියෙනවා. දූරියන්, රඹුටන්, මැංගුස්, ගඩි ගුඩා, ඩොංගා, වගේ පලතුරුත් මේ කාලෙට ඕන තරම් හැදෙනවා. හැබැයි මේ හැම ජාතියම ගොඩාක් ඌෂ්ණාධිකයි. ඒ හින්දා ඒව වැඩියෙන් නොකන්න සමහරු පරිස්සම් වෙනවා. දෙල් වල ඌෂ්ණ ගතිය නම් පොල් හරි පොල් කිරි එක්ක කෑවම ඒ ඌෂ්ණ ගතිය නැතිවෙන බව අපේ පැරැන්නො හොඳහැටි දැනගෙන හිටියා. ඒ නිසා බය නැතුව දෙල් කන්න පුරුදු වුනා.
දෙල් හොඳටම පැහුනම දවසෙන් දෙකෙන් ඉදෙනවා. ඒ හින්දා මං පැහෙන්න ඔන්න මෙන්න තියලා දෙල් ගෙඩි ටිකක් වැඩිපුර කඩාගෙන ආවා. මහගෙදර වත්තෙ ඉබේ පැලවුන පැල දෙල් ගහක අත උසතෙක් දෙල් හැදිල තිබුනා. පැල ගහේ අලුතින් පීදුන දෙල් නිසා දෙල් ගෙඩි පිරිල තිබුනා. මං හැන්දෑවෙන් ගිහින් දෙල් කඩාගෙන ආවා.
පහුවෙනිදා දවල්ට කන්න මං දෙල් වෑංජනයක් කිරට හදන්න ලෑස්ති වුනේ. අලුත් දෙල් නිසා දෙල් පොත්ත තෙල් දාලා මල්ලි හදන බැදුම එයාටම කියල හදවගන්න හිතාගෙන මං දෙල් පොත්ත ටිකක් ගණකමට කැපුවා. දෙල් පොත්ත ගිතෙලෙන් තැම්බෙද්දි ඒකට කූනිස්සොත් දාල මල්ලි හදන * කෑම එක හරිම රසයි. මමත් ඒකටම හරියන්න මාලු මිරිසට උයල කැරට් සම්බෝලෙකුත් හදල පලාකොල මැල්ලුමකුත් හැදුවා. ඉතින් ඒ කෑම වේල සම්පූර්ණ වෙන්න නම් දෙල් වෑංජනේ රසම රසට උකුවට කිරට හදාගන්න ඕන. ඉතින් මං ඒ දෙල් වෑංජනේ තව රසවත් වෙන්න දම් පාට කොච්චි අහුරකුත් එක්ක නිවිති කොල ටිකකුත් එකතු කරගත්තා. එකකට එකක් ගැලපෙන කෑම ජාති වලින් කෑම මේසෙ පිරෙනව කියන්නෙ ඒ කෑම වේල අපේ ඇගටත් ගුණයි කියන එක. ඒ වගේම අපේ හිතත් පිරෙනව කියන එක. ඉතින් මගේ සතුටත් අත්තම්මගෙයි මල්ලිගෙයි හිත් සතුටින් පුරවන එකම තමයි.

This is breadfruit, not jackfruit! Grows in a totally different tree. But yes, green, unripe jackfruit can also be cooked as a curry.
