      on an 2002 explorer do you have to buy a heater plenum, if the arm on one of the blend doors (with a vacuum actuator attached) breaks off? or can you order just the arm from Ford? my drivers side arm has broken off the tabs that grab onto the door.

    I have almost always done the brake jobs on my vehicles. A year or so ago, my wife had to take an unexpected trip so I just took her Lincoln down to get tires and told them to do a front brake job. I walked around outside the bay and watched a young guy just let the calipers hang by the flex line and then start the caliper bolts with an air wrench. He had a hell of a time with one bolt and 8 months later while changing the upper control arms, I found out why. He cross threaded one of the bolts and I had one hell of a time getting it out. I always enjoy your attention to detail and wish all mechanics were as good. Having grown up in my dad’s station, I have some nightmares come in

    I don't even own my Ford Explorer anymore but I just like the way FordTechMakuloco explains things while making the videos. I wish I could find someone like him working on GM Engines on TH-cam.

    Good work. The audio and video where excellent and you never even stumbled over your words at all which means that you obviously know what you're talking about. I see that you've done this at least a couple of times. Sure made changing up the rear brakes all my friends explore much easier. Definitely recommend this video to anyone else who's looking to do rear brakes. Not just on an Explorer

    I do the same thing, torque the wheels twice. Once after the work, and then again after a drive to let the wheel center up. Great video!

    Hey I really appreciate all your knowledge you give us here on TH-cam. Well I have a question for ya. I have a 2004 Ford Explorer and I just changed the front left wheel bearing. For some reason my kids and old lady was power washing it at Walmart. When I started it and started slowly moving the abs light come on. I was like man time to replace another wheel bearing. So I located it and was the front left. Well light went off after I changed it but for some reason now it makes a weird noise turning and 4wd feels like it’s kicking in and jumping. I am totally lost. Changed rear pads and rotors. Pads were worn bad. It didn’t help still doing it. Money is definitely a issue,got 3 kids and haven’t drove it for about 2 months now. Not sure if I should get another car or what. Any help would truly be appreciated.

    While you kinda mentioned it by a visual, those brake pads very much have a right and left side. Which I found out when I couldn't get the caliper to seat.

    thanks for video. I just replaced the pads/rotors on mine. The brake pads have 2 ears at one end and 1 ear at the other end as you discuss at approx 2:50. Does it matter if the 2 ears are on top or bottom? Seems like they are side -specific although ford tech procedures doe not mention anything about orientation. I had a problem with one of the inner pads, but when I exchanged, I picked the wrong one so now one side has 2 ears on top and other hs 2 sides on bottom -- cant install caliper brake ass'y this way. was wondering if i can grind off one of the inner ears or does 2 ears provide some type of function after ii is assembled?

    I would not have replaced the caliper on my car unless their is evidence of the brakes dragging. However on a customers car I guess it's the only way to ensure the brake job will last as long as possible. Yet again another useful video. Thanks

      Here in Illinois rust is the the main cause of most of my repairs...unfortunately. Steel brake lines only last 8-10 years if you're lucky

    I have a question for you about my 2006 explorer, it has had a problem with the brakes since I bought it. There are no warning lights on but when applying them they require quite a bit of effort to come to a stop. If I am in reverse backing down a snow packed hill the front brakes lock up and it slides down and takes quite a bit more force to get the rear brakes to work at all. I checked the rear calipers and they are not frozen. It would be grateful if you or anyone is able to give me some input on this problem.

    I have a 2006 Escape, and most videos use a Wind and Rewind tool for the piston which of course I don't have. CAN I still use a "C" clamp to push piston in?

    @FordTechMekuloco I did Moog hubs with new hardware and park brake shoes, reusing the rotor. With the adjuster completely in and no pressure from the parking brake cable the rotor is fitting so tight over the parking brake shoes that I don't want to drive it. I used a 90 die grinder with abrasive pads and clean the inside of the disc. Ever encounter that? I am going to try to get the rotors machined, or I will replace them

    Is it possible that an old caliper on my 2007 Explorer cause a soft pedal? Assuming I bled the brakes properly, changed the master cylinder, and no leaks anywhere??

    Any advice on adjusting the E-Brake shoes before re-installing the fresh new rotor? Also, the E-brake shoes on the one in the video seemed cracked in several places. Why weren't they replaced as well?

      Slight cracks are ok for parking brake shoes in disc brake systems. Now cracked shoes in a drum brake system are not ok. You have to remember these shoes just hold the in place and most owners never use the parking brake and hence don't want them fixed.

    Just did a brake job on one of these trucks. Took me 4 hours to get 1 of the back rotors off! The dust shields are completely rusted out and the pins that hold the E-Brake pad back weren't holding them any more so now we need new dust shields!

    what is it when the Advance traction control automatically activate in cold weather? I have an 04 navigator and in cold weather, when I press the brakes, it engages the system as if the wheels are skidding but they actually not and the engine loses it's power in the process. Like I said, it only happens in the cold so I got to warm the truck up for about half hour in order for it to keep from engaging.

      Never it just attracts dirt to gum up. Ford does not do this from the factory either.

    I had an issue with the 2006-2010 brake pads listed in the description. I have a 2006 Eddie Bauer V8. When placing the caliper back on the rotor, the bottom hooks on the new pads are not setting. It is as if the pad frame is a few mm to large (length) to seat in. I tried "lightly" hammering the bottom of the caliper / hooks in with a sledge hammer and used a C-Clamp to no avail. Ended up putting the old pads back on since they still had some pad left. They seated in just fine with minimal pressure as expected. I am convinced the pad frame is just slightly larger and incompatible with my vehicle, but they are listed as compatible. Would love any feedback on this issue. I am going to order a different brand of pads at this point.
    Issues aside, this video helped me efficiently perform a brake change. Thank you very much for sharing!

      Update - picked up some Duralast brake pads from autozone and they seated with no issue.

    I have watched every possible video on rear brakes for a 2005 Explorer. Nowhere can I find anything about replacing EBrake cables. I had seized rear EBrake cables on both sides. Ford no longer sells them. I got Raybestos cables and I also got a new intermediate cable. Installed everything (not easy BTW) and now the EBrake pedal goes to the floor and won't hold the car. I removed the intermediate cable and shortened the line by 1/3rd of an inch. Helped but brakes won't hold car. Using NEW rotors, NEW shoes installed on new knuckle assemblies. Shoes are adjusted out as far as they can be while still being able to put rotors on. Most cars have a nut adjuster near the handle/pedal. Haven't found any reference showing an adjustment at the pedal.
    Any ideas or have you done this repair? Any secrets to make it work?

    Do I need to get the axle nut off to take the rotor , I’m guessing I need new brakes but maybe even a new hub because the bearings might be done .. confused as to where to start ? It’s my rear right wheel 2x4 explorer it wouldn’t spin freely when jacked up !!

      This was done off camera as that is not part of a normal pad and rotor replacement.

    I just bought a set of gear wrenches.How much abuse can they take,should I use a regular wrench to get the nuts loose,kinda defeats the purpose and those things are Damn expensive thanks

    Do you take brake fluid off the container. To compress the calipers

      joe acosta If you have to compress your pistons much you'll most likely need to remove some brake fluid.

      No you should not have to unless someone "topped off" the brake fluid which should never be done by any competent technician as brake fluid is not a consumable item.

    What about the bleeding process after disconnecting and reconnecting brake line? I say this because, the people that do not know may reconnect and have problems.

      Brake bleeding and caliper replacement is not part of a normal brake job so it was not shown.

      Nope, as stated in the video caliper replacement is not a normal part of a brake job so I am not going to show the procedure to replace one as part of this video.

      Uh if you replaced the caliper you Will have to bleed the brakes. It Is a normal part as you had to remove the flex hose and abs sensor to replace

      Always yes, I had to replace the caliper but it is not normally part of a brake job so I did not show the process.

    If there's no window for the drum brake adjuster, then how did you adjust the parking brake? Didn't see any procedure in your video

      PB generally don't need adjustment since there is no wear when it is just set and held compared to drum brakes. This is why Ford does not use an auto adjusting feature on PB equipped models.

      Yeah, you're adjusting the parking brake in the video you linked, but I didn't see you adjust it during this video; I'm just looking out for the customer, didn't want his parking brake pedal to hit the floor. They don't usually need adjustment, but rust and dirt buildup does wear them down over 10+ years.

      As stated in the video caliper replacement is not part of a normal brake job and therefore will not be shown. I have a whole video dedicated to proper caliper replacement.

      No, caliper replacement is not part of a normal brake job so as I said in the video I would not show any procedures associated with caliper replacement.

    I have a 2002 Ford Escape and the front breaks make noise when breaking lightly when the weather is cold. Prior to the first break job everything was fine. The rotors and pads have been replaced twice and Permatex high/low temp grease was used during the last break job which seemed to solve the problem and later the noise came back. The front bearings and break hardware were also replaced but the calipers are original. PLEASE let me know if anyone has a solution to my problem.

      FordTechMakuloco The pads were purchased from Auto Nation Ford. The first set were semi metalic and the ones that are installed now are ceramic. Thank you for your help!

    Nice video but something even more interesting would be a video showing what happens when these Exploders with the 4.0 SOHC blow a chain guide on the passenger side...ugh got one undergoing complete engine replacement due to it. NOT FUN!

    Your video was extremely well informed until you installed the rotor. Why did you not measure the runout on the rotor? Typically it is .003 to .005 thousands of an inch. Out of spec can cause pedal pulsation and grabbing to the left or right of the steering wheel. With the offshore stuff I have encountered, it can be hit and miss. I have found you may possibly be able to fix it with the ""switch"". You rotate the rotor on the hub several times to re-index it to conform with limits. You may find it comes back into spec. Although, sometimes they are so warped you can never get back in spec. Suggest a rotor runout video perhaps? Or my apologies if you have.

      No need, if you use quality rotors like the Motorcraft units you won't have this problem.

    Make sure you sucks some brake fluid out of master cylinder if it is full or it will leak out of lid and make a mess

      There no need to disconnect a brake hose to replace pads and rotors. As stated in the video this caliper is severely rusted so it is getting replaced but since it is not part of a normal brake job I will not be showing the procedure to replace the caliper. Did you watch the whole video or skip around?
