    Love this! You guys really get the most out of your one day! That's awesome! Great drone footage! Beautiful sunrise! The trails looked great! Very trusting that people won't just steal their crafts. You're Spanish makes me laugh! You son has great vocabulary! Good on him! Donkeys! No goat tacos? Oh well. :-) Looks like a great lunch. those jalepenos! Ha! Great trip~ . Thanks for sharing!

    I know it’s an older video but we recently finished up our big trip for the year. A three week road trip to WestTexas and Southern New Mexico. Just wanted to share my thoughts and experience as this was a first time visit to this region and these parks.
    Wow oh wow was this park just incredible. I was in awe. I don’t really rank parks but this is in the upper echelon for me. We were fortunate to spend five full days in the Big Bend area, one day for the state park and four days for the national park. We camped in the Chisos Basin campground which I would highly recommend. It’s as centrally located in the park as you can get, cooler temperatures than the desert floor, and we had an amazing view of Casa Grande from our campsite.
    Unfortunately the Boquallias crossing and the hot springs were closed due to COVID so we didn’t get to experience those places. However, we had plenty of highlights. Some of those being the River Road scenic drive from Presidio to Terlingua (spectacular), Santa Elena Canyon, Balanced Rock, Closed Canyon and Hoodoos Trail in the state park, various trails up in the Chisos Basin, and those sunsets and dark skies every night.
    The big miss for me was not being able to summit Emory Peak or make it out to the South Rim. Gives me a reason to return and I would return in a heartbeat.

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on, Michael! Big Bend was much better than I had expected. Kind of one of those places you can experience for a period of several days and find new and unique activities to enjoy. Hope you can get back!

    Great video. How much was the boat, and then the donkey ride each way?

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really can't remember the cost of the boat. It was rather inexpensive. As for transportation - walk, horses or donkeys and they are available each way. We rode in and chose to walk back. Relatively short distance.

    Hello my fellow Chicago Bears fan. Big Bend is an awesome and vast area. I don't know if you hiked it, but if you ever find yourself back down there, check out Santa Elena canyon, right on the Rio Grande. It's spectacular. I try to visit every year. Ive visited New Jersey years back. And it's nice to see folks from other states enjoy the treasures of Texas. I live in central Texas and enjoy hiking. And one of my goals is to hike Emory Peak. Also just curious when you guy crossed the border. Did you have or need a passport? I have a friend who enters and crosses back through and from the border at Eagle Pass Tx. Simply with a birth certificate. Just curious do you think a birth certificate would be Sufficient to go to and from Mexico. Or do you think I'd need an actual passport?

    • @AmericasParks

      Hello Mark, thanks for the kind words! Our trip to Texas/NM was probably my favorite NP Spring Break vacation. Loved it there! I would double-check as the rules are changing, but we brought passports for ourselves and a birth certificate for our younger son. Small checkpoint (right in the Park) with quick access. Happy trails on your hikes!

    Oops! PS May I challenge you on future trips to take a flying leap of faith, and try the local weird foods? I would have jumped at the chance for a goat taco, because most Mexican restaurants up here wouldn't offer it, so it's possibly the only chance you'll ever have, and you'll probably end up liking it. For example, I tried beaver bacon offered by our guide up in Ontario some years ago on a dogsledding trip, and was one of the few to do it. IT WAS WONDERFUL!

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally I lean to the indigenous food to get the "full experience", but just couldn't pull the trigger on this one. Many have comments goat tacos are delicious.

    Riding in a rowboat across the Rio Grande! Sweet! I love in your videos how you add those special moments like - the discussion about uncomfortable donkey rides to Bethlehem while riding the Mexican trail, eating jalapeños for lunch and drinking every beverage on the table (way to go Shane!), and the smiles all around. Randy, a few years after the fact, when it no longer means a thing, buena música = good music, and as was mentioned by the fam, buenas tardes = good aft.
    This is a park, as well as a portion of Texas, that I'd some day like to visit.
    Re. Mary and the donkey, the vote is "No way, Jose!", right? I've heard of pioneer moms working in the fields until the time came to give birth, then working the rest of the day. They were tough back then.

      Pre-9/11, you didn't need a passport. You could just walk across the river (it is usually only knee high or lower) or take a boat or a burro, if you wanted. Boquillas was always fun to visit when I went to Big Bend. :)

    I'm really glad you did a video on Big Bend because I've never been to this National Park. It was funny when you were hollering across the river to the Mexicans telling them you liked their music. Lol You work really hard with the camera work obviously especially on the boat scene . I can tell you left the camera on the shores which you guys rowed back to get it. Plus the fact that you're lugging around the camera on a tripod the whole time. I need to probably get business cards with my TH-cam channel on it as well :). Very good video my friend.

    Nice trip! We were there last summer in JUNE! We had a much different experience. Yours was one of enjoyment, ours was survival! I can't wait until we have flexibility to pick the time of year better.
    Would you share a bit about how you make the time to travel? It appears you are in the Northeast, which is a huge drive from most parks. I assume you fly and rent cars most of the time?

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, I am a pastor of a large church with 4 weeks of vacation. I save my special holidays which buys me another week. With a day off each week, I've found going from Thursday to Saturday (10 days) gives me the biggest bang for the buck. Usually in that time can see a cluster of National Parks in a given area. As for travel, all airplane. I have a Southwest Credit Card that I earn miles on (spending, speaking engagements, getting others to join) which basically pays for my airfare. A small car rental and tent camping and eating out of the car makes it affordable. Hope that helps!

    • @RollinRagu
      @RollinRagu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the information. When talking to others about our own adventures, I can't help but be passionate for wanting them to have similar experiences. However, the number one hurdle for most is time. I believe many could find it if they decide it is a priority. So I'm always interested in how people have made time for it. As a middle school teacher, we take full advantage of summers, which has been a blessing to our family. We will usually be on the road for all but a few days of the summer break. The rest of the year we camp local only.
      As you've seen, we travel with a largish' trailer. I think its the right decision for us, since we are gone for larger blocks of time and need the convenience/comfort. However, I do envy the idea of plane travel and being "light".

  • @filmingfamily
    @filmingfamily 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh, I love to see our most favorite place in our home state, YES!!! The sun is crazy here, I cannot tell you how much I am already afraid about the TX summer hell. We had this singer in Boquillas canyon as well, I think he is there almost all the time :) But it has a nice atmosphere then, right? Thanks for the tour to Mexico. Even though we go to Big bend quite a lot, we have never crossed the line (with little ones it would be a little tough...these donkeys tec.). Balanced rock in Grapevine hills is one ouf favorite hikes in the park. I remember when we hiked there with the kids to make a photoshoot right at the sunset. Climbing there really in the last minute before sun dissappeared, I just couldn't make the kids "pose" for the picture. We have so many pics where one or the other is screaming that they don't want to take photooos :) But not a single one usable. Well, family fun... Your sunset down there by hot springs was very nice too, love it! Anyway, if you have a chance to go once again, definitely explore Chisos mountains and the other side of the park along the road to Santa Elena Canyon (if you didn't already). it is in my opinion, the nicest part of the Big Bend. But I understand that it is difficult to do all of that in one day. The distances in the parks are huge, everything is bigger in Texas :) Thank you so much for reminding us the place we love so dearly and hope you will return one day! Have a great week guys!

      Really appreciate your kind words! Didn't know you lived in that area. I totally agree, such a beautiful landscape. Big Bend is definitely on of those Parks where you could spend a week and still find great activities to do! Love to hear of your fond family memories. Just tonight all 6 of us watched several of our videos. So thankful!

    Excellent tour!! so much interesting stuff to see here thanks for taking us along! Roxana says you should have had the goat tacos hahaha (her family raised goats in southern Mexico). great job setting up all these neat shots. Like at 4:53, your car pulling in with the mtns in the distance.. fantastic.. you got a lot of good angles like that

      Think a few others mentioned that as well. Believe it was just the "goat" thing that needlessly scared me away.

    I have been in that hot springs 2004. that was supposed to be a resort but it failed long ago. the river is like a sewer. do not go in the river.

      Read your comment regarding the river about three years too late! lol! Thanks for the advice if I get back. The hot tub was a highlight of our trip. Take care!

    Great show, y'all! I really like your channel and good to see you. Just visited Big Bend this fall and you hit some good spots and love the funny commentary. The locals recommended a drink from the hot spring... my group tried to dissuade me but I was all in and it was delicious. Next time the south rim trail is worth every step to the top. One of the grandest views I've ever seen in all my hiking.

      Thanks so much, Jon! I really loved Big Bend. Hope to release a "15 Favorite National Parks" video soon. Ranking Big Bend much higher than others do in lists such as these. Incredible Park! Interesting story about the spring. Never would have even considered it! ATB to you in 2020!

    Hey that was awesome! Great to see you back on the new video board again! Where you been!! Anyways, since I was just there in November this video was a treat for me to see. Man, i wish the crowds were light at the Hot springs when I went! Very cool! Also the river crossing was closed the day we went as my step-son was wanting to take that trip as he had his passport with him.Big Bend is just a great place all around. Hey You! Check out my newest fishing video on my channel( San Vicente). One of my best all around fast paced edits ive done. Cant wait to see the rest of your stops! Gonna definitely share this with the family later. June is coming up quick! Cant wait.!!

      Right on! We had a great time in the SW. Made 7 NP stops, hope to get a video up each week. Big Bend was definitely the best and the place where I shot the most footage. Bummer you guys couldn't cross the border. That was a unique highlight of the trip. Looking forward to the CA trip!
