  • CINCINNATI (Howard Ain) -- This is a check cashing scam that has cost a lot of people thousands of dollars. Scammers have found a way to rob you Sometimes without you ever realizing it. Fraud victim Sean Miller said, "They used my name and address to various people for large amounts of money." Sean is the owner of Frank's Auto Shop. He was surprised to learn that the name and address of his business were being used on counterfeit checks. To date, Sean says none of his accounts have been compromised as best he can tell. But, he knows the reputation of his business is being compromised. Stephen Danson, a U.S. Postal Inspector, said, "Sometimes they use legitimate company addresses as their return address on the postage to make it seem legitimate."Postal inspectors say con-artists use fake checks in all sorts of scams. "People will look up the company to see if it is legitimate there, but it is all a rouse - the company does not mail the check out," Danson said. The goal is to get victims to deposit the fake checks - and send back money via money orders or even cash. Then, days later the victim learns the check bounced and they are out all of the money. "I think it's disgusting," Miller said. "At least in the old days you got robbed, you knew you got robbed." Sean is learning a valuable lesson about the need to monitor all of his accounts every day. "I'm online checking my balance, checking what was spent, making sure I recognize my transactions," Miller said. In the meantime, postal inspectors are advising consumers to be on the lookout for companies looking to hire people to stuff envelopes with those fake checks. "If you were hired online to stuff checks into envelopes, and you are being provided postage, you need to check with postal inspectors to see if this is a legitimate job," Danson said. The bottom line is, if you receive a check and are told to deposit it or re-ship it to someone else, first take the check to your local bank and ask them to authenticate it before you do anything.Follow us on Twitter @Local12 and LIKE us on Facebook for updates!

Never accept personal or cashier check as legitimate payment from stranger. You are resposible for the deposited check, money order, cashier check etc.... for 1-3 years period after it is cleared by central bank.

Walt Jisney Channel You deposit the check and the bank doesn't realize its fake until about 2 or 3 days later so it bounces but you have already spent the funds cause the bank give you the funds after you deposit the check then 3 or 5 days later you have an overdraft cause the bank takes its money back from the check bouching. Get it?
