THAT is EXACTLY what he was doing-- he was asked how he "played" his characters- and said- " I'm not Playing AnYBODY- I'm just being ME".. and it was TRUE.

Untrue, I can imagine Burt Lancaster and a few other of the great actors doing it just as well. It's okay to be a Wayne fan; just don't forget all the other greats.

He represented a generation of hard-working men and women that supported law and order. He believed in the American Dream. And he was willing to work for that dream. It’s a concept that needs to be refreshed, and re-learned.

I'm met John Wayne when I was a kid; he came in to Doolies Hardware Mart in Long Beach, CA when my Grandfather and I were buying hardware. Doolies was the kind of hardware store where one could buy just about any kind of hardware specialized or not. It was around 1966 or so, and yes he was very nice to me and my Grandfather. I didn't remember the conversation other than he asked me what my name was. People came from miles around to shop there. At another time I met Paul Brineger from Rawhide. Go ahead now, "make my day."

@@williamwilson6499 Anyone with a differing opinion of others can paint them with a broad brush as a racist. Also, a great many celebrities choose to be anonymous benefactors and most people choose to gravitate to events that give them the most pleasure, one of which the Duke chose was chess but I know of nothing in the 20 years that our lives overlapped to suggest that he was egocentric, such as a whole generation which choses to live it's social live indoors, at home, on the internet.
Also, there are varying accounts of his interest in the services in WW2, but he, like Clark Gable, would have been too old and a trophy for the Axis troops were they to kill him in combat or to capture him. Because of this the varying services wouldn't want to take the time to try to indoctrinate him. He served the country admirably in pro-American anti-Axis movies.

The problem with these movies is, there would always be one jack ass that would draw and start shooting in the real world. 🙄

It was strange how the film cast the left-wing gay Gary Grimes as a racist, and the openly racist Wayne as a fair-minded character.

What hurts this scene, almost ruins it, is the dreadful music score. These old time directors had lost their way by this time, as evinced by the terrible music, the hackneyed scenes, and the obligatory painful "humorous" side kicks. F this.

Wayne made some good movies but after learning how he evaded the draft in WWII, I can't stand watching him.
