Ps5 and series x are basically same hardware. Ps4 and one was too, I think. Everything has been basically just a computer these days. The switch is essentially a tablet with repurposed tech. It's still more of a console than the others. Consoles kinda died in the ps2 Era.
@@MrBearyMcBearface All consoles are basically a purpose built computer. NES was not much more than a slightly customized 6502 CPU with a custom PPU. The master system a Z80, Genesis a 68000+Z80 All of these are the basis of very popular computer systems of that day. The main differences were that they are essentially a stripped to absolute minimum system to make the systems affordable and profitable. Microsoft was the first popular system to use an actual intel based instructions set CPU in the original Xbox. The biggest difference between the Xbox and a pc of the time was how the memory was managed and shared between the CPU and IGP. As we can extrapolate from these various emulators, much of the code is integrated and optimized from other emulator projects, CPU arcade boards etc. So really none of this is new. It's just the optimizations, accuracy, and the ability to emulate so many non platform native architectures so well.
@@wolvenar that's why I decided just to go all out on a rig. Why buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X right now, when every game these days is available on everything (Nintendo just be doing they own thing) PS4 and Xbox One were essentially just stripped down X86 computers, like you said.
And in that case I'd just buy a gaming laptop and get amazing 4K emulation on all these 6th and 7 th gen consoles the big three finally successfully pushed me back to PC because everything on console got so watered down and lack originality to point of "why bothered?" The only selling point they have right now is the ease of use and exclusive games which atm only two companies have and one are basically a consolized PC on subscription service with no unique content of its own. I'll eventually buy a PS5 purely because they still honor physical media and they have their own VR headset. Good thing we still have Nintendo doing their own thing or gaming would get very boring.
@@barebarekun161 only reason I have my eye on a PS5 eventually as well. I know Sony is definitely going offer something on par with the HTC Vive or Valve Index. Hopefully it's PC compatible as well.

Because that is the only game the PS2 supports with 1080i if you connect to TV using component cable. It's already looking stunning with native hardware.
Duckstation was such a game changer. I only play ps1 games on my pc lately, front mission 3 most recently. I am sure pcsx2 will be amazing if it’s the same team working on it. Great strides in emulation are always exciting and the ps2 library is unmatched

Look how good PS2 looks when upscaled! THIS is the level of emulation i was expecting from Sony when the announced their Classics Program, same with Duckstation vs their PS1 emulator. They are sitting on a gold mine. Thank God for open source emulation.
I do not know how you manage to keep all the acronyms straight. That alone is an impressive feat of voicework, not to mention all the other work involved in this video. Keep up the great work man!
Very cool. I tried PCSX2 as a RetroArch core on my Series X awhile back. Didn’t have much luck with the games I was trying to run. But now I just emulate everything on my Steam Deck.
Quality content like always! Really like the emulator content. Wish sony would give us that option. If they were not so greedy on keeping old games digital for sales. The ps5 would be easy enough to run a ps2 emulation internally. Imagine ripping the game in straight from the disc and playing it without a hassle. Or atleast a pcsx2 app that plays from usb.
It's on Retail too, by the way. The thing that sucks, is that the emulators are getting removed from the store really fast after being added. Apparently, at one point, they were even getting removed daily. Gamr13 decided to only re-submit/upload them again once a week. The biggest downside for me, is that since they're getting re-uploaded to the store, they're always considered separate apps. Meaning you don't get updates. If you want a more up-to-date version of the emulator, you have to download the whole app again, and copy all of your config files, boxart covers, bios files, and memory cards over from the old app to the new one. There also doesn't seem to be an easy way to tell which version of the emulator you're using, or which version is currently being uploaded to the store. Meaning you don't actually know when you should be trying to update to a new version. Here's a small tip: I can't personally find a way to make new Memory Cards in XBSX2. But what you CAN do, is download PCSX2 on your PC and make a bunch of blank 32mb memory cards, and just copy those cards over to XBSX2. Way better than using the default 8mb cards. I currently have 5 32mb cards on my XBSX2, 1 being used right now, and 4 extra empty ones. Also, fair warning: If you have a slower, and older External Hard Drive that you're running your PS2 games off of, there's gonna be some freezing. It'll freeze every so often for about a second or two, then go back to running fine again. It's just the Hard Drive being a bit slow. Buying a faster newer one should solve that issue. I only mention it, because I couldn't figure out why mine were doing that, and it took an annoying amount of googling and asking on TH-cam before I finally got an answer. And not EVERY game is gonna run perfect. Most games I've tried, run fine in Hardware emulation mode, with upscaled graphics and everything. But SOME games here and there, need to be switched to Software, and those can't be upscaled to look nicer, you're stuck with the original PS2 resolution. But they at least work. I've only come across 1 game so far that I can't get working at full speed, that being Juiced. I can get it to run between 45-50 FPS at best, setting it to DX12 mode.
I bought a backwards compatible ps3 a few years ago to play my ps2 library, but my word this app blows it out the water. Thank you to the people that made this a reality for console users ❤️
You can find a Series S used for around $150-180 now too, l saw one at a thrift store and similar prices on eBay. Don’t think much matches that for the cost, maybe a lucky computer purchase from a business that is upgrading/closing down?
thank you for showcasing Burnout 3! Too bad there is still the sun showing through mountains at some points. Minor issue though and still highly playable
This just goes to show that how much work the rPCS3 team has put into the rPCS3 Emulator. Even PS2 emulation hasn't been worked to perfection yet even though the console is more than 20 years old.
Recently finished Soul Reaver 1, 2 and Defiance on the Series X. It runs really well, although there's some stuttering that seems to be related to audio (when loading a new audio track or dialogue).
I was wondering about the pressure sensitivity, as some of you may know that the ps2 controller had a pressure sensitive buttons that are required to play certain games such as metal gear and socom 2, in socom 2 for instance the triangle button is for stance, so holding the button makes the character prone, half press is crouching and lite press is for standing. I also believe that you need a ps2 or a ps3 controller for it to work as for xbox controller buttons aren't pressure sensitive. so does this verson of the emulator has a workaround for this issue?
Some games have ingane settings to change to triggers (tokyo xtreme racer), xbsx2 also supports button mapping but have not used it yet because i have not had the need to use it
Xbsx2 has an apply pressure setting you map it to a button and hold it while you press the pressure sensitive button for it to register as a tap instead of a full press for socom I have it mapped to l2 and I hold that when I press triangle to crouch you are also able to play games online on xbsx2 there’s private servers up for a bunch of games just look up socom community and ps rewired
@@GSG-io8zp I did map it to LT once but it's annoying to remap all the controls and get used to it cuz of muscle memory, its a pain but its better than using a ps2 or a ps3 controller with a usb adapter.

"XBOX is still the best way to play PS2 games" oh, the irony. Just imagine even thinking that in 2003.
I had trouble setting up retroarch in dev mode setting up ps2 then found pcxs2 standalone and have had a great time replaying my childhood games.
Been using xbsx2 for a few weeks now and it's fecking amazing there are retail modes for the app too.. you should have given a shout-out to gamer13 he's the one who got all this running in the first place
This is the golden age of ps2 emulation, with aetherSX2 and this
Big Fact and it's only going to get better
Been waiting for better emulation on the series console. Thanks for the video Dimitri
This cross platform emulating is really amazing these days
Ps5 and series x are basically same hardware. Ps4 and one was too, I think. Everything has been basically just a computer these days. The switch is essentially a tablet with repurposed tech. It's still more of a console than the others. Consoles kinda died in the ps2 Era.
@@MrBearyMcBearface
All consoles are basically a purpose built computer.
NES was not much more than a slightly customized 6502 CPU with a custom PPU.
The master system a Z80, Genesis a 68000+Z80
All of these are the basis of very popular computer systems of that day.
Why buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X right now, when every game these days is available on everything (Nintendo just be doing they own thing)
PS4 and Xbox One were essentially just stripped down X86 computers, like you said.
And in that case I'd just buy a gaming laptop and get amazing 4K emulation on all these 6th and 7 th gen consoles the big three finally successfully pushed me back to PC because everything on console got so watered down and lack originality to point of "why bothered?"
The only selling point they have right now is the ease of use and exclusive games which atm only two companies have and one are basically a consolized PC on subscription service with no unique content of its own.
Playing on series x in retail with retroarch and pcsx2 core. Some games run at full speed upscaling at 4k. Even without this fork. Cant wait to see the future of xbox emulation.
Thanks for the vids MVG.
Does that mean one doesn't have to sign up for developer mode/ options?

I'm just blown away by how realistic Gran Turismo 4 looks even now, nearly 20 years after launch.
Because that is the only game the PS2 supports with 1080i if you connect to TV using component cable. It's already looking stunning with native hardware.
Me meeting myself from 20 years ago: "Ey you wanna go play PS2 on the Xbox?"
Me 20 years ago: "Ye...wait what?"
Love the emulation scene so much haha.
Duckstation was such a game changer. I only play ps1 games on my pc lately, front mission 3 most recently. I am sure pcsx2 will be amazing if it’s the same team working on it. Great strides in emulation are always exciting and the ps2 library is unmatched
Here fellow wanzers mercenaries 🤘
Ps2 and gta vice city helped my fellow Marines and I to just sit there and escape after every single tough day after 9/11. Im sure talkin and sharing our emotions wouldve been more beneficial. But hey, we were teens in war. Great video as always. Always look fwd to them. 👍
Wow, that's really great. If the Series S drops to $200 this holiday (or later on) I think I'll have to pick it up for emulation alone.
Also, about software rendering, it's very useful in games like Wrath of Cortex when special effects like fog break hardware mode
and sega rally championship which is black and white in hardware mode.
@@hydroxyzine1136 believe Pcsx2 just fixed that recently too
If I didn't know any better, those games could easily pass for PS3 games. I am amazed at how well the upscaled emulation looks.
PS2 was a huge step up over PS1.
@@dericjames2018 it was only held back by bad picture quality and aliasing. thankfully, both issues can be easily eliminated by emulators
Great video - I love seeing these emulators, and your coverage is informative and accessible.
That looks really impressive, might have to finally bite the bullet and get a series X.
Bite it 😋 it's an awesome console. Best one yet imo.
It also plays CDs DVDs Blu-ray 4K Blu-ray...
Very cool. I tried PCSX2 as a RetroArch core on my Series X awhile back. Didn’t have much luck with the games I was trying to run. But now I just emulate everything on my Steam Deck.
instant thumbs up for PS2- related content ^_^
Instant like for MVG
Few things in life are better than Xbox and PlayStation, now, combine the two, now that's nice
You can even play Outrun 2006 at 60FPS and 720p (it does struggle at 1080p).
It's a fantastic emulator!
Reading this do you think using a USB pen drive would be okay to run? That’s what I was hoping to use instead
@@BCKZLDN A USB stick will save everything. Thats how i'm doing it. That's on PCSX2, tho.

Hopefully you can map it to triggers and the D pad may also be pressure sensitive IIRC.
I have a USB adapter to use ps2/ps3/ps4 controllers on xbox, they work.
@@GSG-io8zp I did map it to LT once but it's annoying to remap all the controls and get used to it cuz of muscle memory, its a pain but its better than using a ps2 or a ps3 controller with a usb adapter.

This makes me really want Sony to implement emulators into the PS5 so you could take any generation PlayStation disc and play it from the ps1 to the ps3
you just need two consoles to play all generation of sony games - backwards compatible PS3 and PS5 :-)

I'm not overly concerned about the limitations of the Xbox Series S. It's a 1080p system by design, right? So if it runs games smoothly at 1080p, that's more than good enough. It's not like I've got a 4K television set anyway!

Can you cover the XBSX2 (Xbox One) Version @ModernVintageGamer ? I'd be interested in seeing how the Xbox One can handle PS2 Emulation, despite your claims of it running slow.
It aint going to happen on a standard xbox. The main reason the new xbox can handle ps2 is because of its 8 core cpu.
@@fatnugs3925 If there was no way the Xbox One/One X could run some PS2 games, then an Xbox One version of the Emulator wouldn't have had a reason to exist. If people can emulate PS3 on low end PCs better than what Sony themselves can do, I'm pretty certain that with enough refinement of the PS2 emulator over time that even the Xbox One Consoles could eventually run PS2 games flawlessly.
