I cracked a smile at 8:27 too. All the stuff people like is IN metal. It's just masked by distortion and the inherent desire to make it ugly/abrasive/heavy. Mirar does the "TRY to find the melody" thing REALLY well. It's really cool once it all clicks.
I am so fucking glad to see Mirar get the attention they so deserve. Such a wild EP. I prefer the singles so far overall, but the experimentation that happens in the EP is pretty radical and it's grown on me a ton.
The two piece is Norwegian and French (Marius Elfstedt and Léo Watremez). And a lot of it is programming, like drums and I think bass. Love the video and I love to see that Mirar is talked about.
Mirar absolutely reinvented the whole meaning of HEAVY. The album is sonically insane and it’s nuts how much melody they have despite the whole thing being crazy dissonant ❤
4:35 French guy here: It doesn't mean ANYTHING in French. You're welcome xD Also I think this song wasn't the best to introduce Mirar, I think the song Hestehov has one of the most beautiful yet heavy riff ever wirtten. BTW how have you not done a Igorrr reaction video by now ? :D Insane that you haven't! Please do guys !
with Vildjharta being my favourite band Mirar's EP was my favourite release this year, such an amazing band. You shoul'dve messed with his head with the track "Toccatta" espacially that it's somewhat of a cover of Bach, would've really wanted to see Judson's reaction to that one
Allt's (THALLT) new album is my AOTY currently. Unless VOLA's release on Nov 1st beats it. So much good music is being released so often its hard to keep up
Mirar is one of my top albums of the year. It pushes thall into new spaces. I don’t know anything about theory, but the writing is layered, flows, and combines a few different genres in a unique way. My favs off the album are Hestahov and Franka…and Cauchemar To me, djent plays with space in the rhythm. The space is just as important as the notes being played. I see thall as “post-djent” where it uses this idea as a foundation and creates space both between the notes rhythmically but also totally and with pitch. Theres also space compositionally when they add the ambient spaces or layer that as a contrast between the heaviness in the moment. Thanks for the video and sharing talks thoughts. I’m sure the list is long, but I’d recommend Lychgate. They’re a black metal group utilizing organ in their work. Letter XIX, A Principle of Seclusion, or progeny of Singularity.
👿🔱😈.. sounds similar to math Rock to me.. odd time signatures and a lot going on that doesn't make sense to the ear... making something complex for the sake of being complex.. okay it's complex and layered and has a lot going on... but is it a good song or appeal to your sense of rhythm or your ears ?.. No..
@@TheBFNI can see a connection to math rock with the different time signatures and technical aspects. I don’t think that things sounding good to the ears is always the point. This does sound good to MY ears, but it can come down to preference. I think some artists make music that isn’t meant to be pleasant to the ears - that was kinda the point of early metal. To me, this music is pushing/playing with the boundaries of what we call music. I can appreciate that others’ might not find it appealing.
@@TheBFN Are you saying the time signatures are all over the place in this song? It's a cover of Rachmaninoff's 2nd(edit wrote 3rd but is 2nd) piano concerto, so it's just in 4/4. Maybe you're talking about math rock, if so just ignore me.
Traces by Vildjharta is a great song. It's really heavy but has some great clean vocals later in the song. It's rhythmically complex but not in an off-putting way. As always, great job guys!
So many good choices from the first album. Shadow, Dagger, All These Feelings, When No One Walks With You, The Lone Deranger... they've gotta do one of them for sure.
"I am facing the fact that I am up and gay in space" Mis-heard lyrics aside, yeah it's my favorite song of theirs, was thinking it would be a good one for a video.
Can I just say that I LOVED hearing Judson talk about abstract painting and comparing it to the music because that's A LOT like how I feel with music but a great way of putting it into a figure of speech.
I listened something of Mirar but only one piece really marked on my memory, it's called Lisette. Those guitar moans pierced my insides with some sort of grief. That's an example of a catchy thall line but, for me, thall is mostly not catchy at all - noises, drops, atmospheric pauses, drops and noises that are pretty random and don't bring any emotion. So i treat thall with a note of caution. I generally don't get it but when I see thall musicians relating their stuff to such a huge composer as Rachmaninoff, kinda jamming with him... Well, there must be... A key! to see (hear) a concept that I'm missing.
This stuff is really interesting but it hasnt grabbed me yet. I'm definitely intrigued and have got a load more bands to check out from this comment section. What a great little community you're fostering.
Same here. I almost always hear something and think "hell yeah let's check this out" but then 2 or 3 songs later I'm still enjoying it generally but just not hooked, and then I kinda lose interest before the album is done. Might be better for me in EP form.
Check out the latest song by Allt called Aquila. It’s definitely more digestible for someone new to this type of sound as they’re more Metalcore with a bit of a Thall flavour.
Mirar is a great band, this release is likely going to end up being one of my favourites this year, however with thall i still don't think anyone can ever exceed humanity's last breath. Or vildhharta for that matter, however i do prefer the cosmically crushing level of heaviness provided by HLB. In any case, this entire release is very likely to be in my top 10 this year.
It's definitely different, I really struggle with thall so much. There are moments of perfection, where emotion is captured perfectly but other times it's very abrasive to listen to.
Judson with the great Pearl Jam rendition that was beautiful stuff man. Mirar is fascinating.... That guitar going through micro-tonal intervals with the pitch shifting is incredible stuff. I think Judson prefers consonant music compared to dissonant. Please also check out the new Within The Ruins song - "Demon Killer"
Love this reaction breakdown of this brilliant music mates Is the " Vildhjarta " song you refer to "Måsstadens Nationalsång (Under Vatten)" I cannot pronounce it either Plz let me know if that is the one because I want to examine that as well
It would be interesting to see what Judson thinks of dissonant black/death stuff, as like thall it's also kinda "weird" and off-kilter and creative, and some has that play between chunky lows and contrasting highs... but track selection might be kinda critical as a lot of it is blasty and some of it really "beats you over the head." Everyone will scream "ULCERATE!" and they are great and they have elements I think Judson would like, but they are also really oppressive at times, and pretty long-winded which might not work as well for videos. Perhaps something off the latest albums from Horror God or Redemptor would be a little softer entry, or something like "Moon Vessel" from Ceremony of Silence. It's a weird kinda sub-sub-genre where the dissonance is an obvious tying element amongst all of the bands, but so many use it differently... but to people who don't "get it" or like it they tend to say it all sounds the like the same "jangly mess." Sometimes the bands use the dissonance for obscure, haunting leads and little melodies that pop up here and there, while some use it as this dense, crush, oppressive wall of sound. Some use it to craft complex slithering, almost unsettling melodic riffs, while others use it in an almost hypnotic, swirling way, and a few bands turn them into almost grooves. Because of the variety, it would be pretty tough to choose where to start, and even if he didn't like one of them you guys would almost have to keep trying with different bands.
Try out the Band Indistinct from Tampere in Finnland. Its a totally different Style of Thall with great Songwriting. The Songs Sulphur or Charlatan or Twighlight Island are great!
If you want Metal Piano Concertos may I recommend pretty much any song by KEYGEN CHURCH? CHURCH is a side project of the man behind MASTER BOOT RECORD which I also very much recommend you give a listen to.

Hey guys, well that was horrible. I recommend the band Igorrr and the song himalaya massive ritual, its really creative.
Igorrr!!! That would be awesome to see.
I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE Igorrr!

I second Igorrr but I'd pick Overweight Posey.
