  • Hi Everyone,
    I'm back with another art tutorial. This time I am showing you how to create an alcohol ink abstract painting and how to mount it on to a small canvas (**please note in this video I am not painting directly onto canvas - but I will be doing a tutorial on that soon). See below for where I bought my materials.

    For working out your composition, its better to use two L- shaped matte boards in a neutral color and about 3-4" thick which will cover the outside parts so they don't interfere with what you are looking at. I just noticed that you seemed to be going back and forth and you ended up leaving out the part on the left almost intirely. I keep my L's hanging on the wall on a nail in my framing area to help me with knowing where to crop and matte my work for framing etc. You do interesting paintings. I'm attracted to colour so I have fallen in love with the alcohol inks!

    • @EmmaRave
      @EmmaRave  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes looking back at it now I understand what you mean. I do sometimes struggle with composition. I don't like to cover the whole page but sometimes the inks don't go where I want them to go. Thanks for the tips :) and thanks for watching!

      Hey, in this video I used resin to seal it but you can use something like Golden's UVLS varnish. You don't necessarily need to varnish but I would advise to because over time the inks will fade especially if placed somewhere with sunlight on it.

      Hey, thank you for watching! The yellow I used was Sunshine Yellow. I hope to release the other video in the next few months. The difference is that you would have to prime the canvas first otherwise the ink will soak into the fabric too much.

  • @smooth111012
    @smooth111012 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great work, couple of questions/
    What kind of paper did you use? ( I couldn’t make it out )
    And how do you get a smooth resin surface?
    I have used resin to coat my acrylic canvas and I stir them well and I get dimples etc

    • @EmmaRave
      @EmmaRave  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a paper called Yupo - link should be in the description :) The reason why dimples can appear is either because your canvas isn't level or tight enough or it can be that the resin is too thin in areas. I would add little bits of resin every 5 minutes to the sections where the dimples are appearing as it dries. Check out this video - th-cam.com/video/qBFdhJvZNrM/w-d-xo.html from about 10min30 as I get dimples in that one. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    This is so beautiful! I think I got most of the supplies I need... liquidex acrylic ink (I think it’s the same as alcohol ink), rubbing alcohol, I read in the other comments that you like Yupo paper, I got resin... what is the white that you used? And did you use gold acrylic ink too? Thanks so much for showing this video!

    • @EmmaRave
      @EmmaRave  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No - acrylic ink is very different to alcohol ink. I don't think I actually ended up using the acrylic ink in this video but I tend to show everything I think I may use. For this video I just used Tim Holtz alcohol inks except the white alcohol ink is by Jacquard and is called pinata white. The gold that I used on the other piece is by liquid leaf in colour classic. Great tutorial thank you Emma. 1 thing, you said you don't spray anything onto the painting before resining it. I didn't think the alcohol inks were light fast. Won't they fade under the resin? I know the resin is UV resistant to yellowing but I didn't think that meant the painting underneath would be protected, just the resin itself

    • @EmmaRave
      @EmmaRave  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey, thanks for your comment. The resin like you said is UV resistant and will protect the painting for years to come however I have concerns too about yellowing. I have looked on forums and the consensus seems to be that it is better to add that layer of protection (UV varnish) before resining it. Thanks for asking the question - I'm learning too :)

      When you add too much isopropyl to the black ink it does start to turn brown especially if you are allowing the ink to bleed across the page. Try using a bit more of the black and less of the isopropyl and use a foam brush to move the ink around.

      You can use a gloss varnish. It won't be as shiny as resin but it would still have a slight shine.

      Hi Susan, I use ArtResin. It's a really good brand and I get on with it well. I did resin the sides too. I did actually film the process but realized I had left my bank card in shot the whole way through so had to delete it - oops! I just let the resin slide over the edges whilst it was propped up on cups. Glad you liked the video :)

      No real reason, its just I had a canvas free. Most people prefer hanging canvas because it's lighter but It's easier mounting it on to wood so I guess I do it by preference :)
