I use to work with a guy I called Bull tits because he was useless. One time I told him to grab me a rake and he brought back a shovel. It made my fingers go numb just to watch these huge one-cylinder bikes. It was worth it though just to hear the really irritating "on hold" music which reminded me of being trapped for two hours in an elevator. I swear, TechnoLogic is coming for me!
In the 1980s, Lucky Kaiser made a V twin motorbike with 2 cylinders from a Rolls Royce Merlin engine. 5000cc which is the same size as the Flying Millyard.
@@mlww5746 Allan Millyard wasn't the first to build a 5000cc V twin motorcycle but did Lucky Kaiser build his own frame wereas Allan Millyard did and dose Lucky Kaiser still ride his 5000cc V twin motorcycle
3liters of engine capacity in a single cylinder is massive, but no comparsion to the old stationary single cylinder monsters. Probably the biggest of them has 110x more capacity than the 3 liter bike: The "De La Vergne" engine is a single cylinder engine built in 1903. It is rated 125 HP and 4100 ft-lbs. of torque (at 160 RPM!), has 26" bore and 38" stroke. That equals 20,175 cubic inches or 330 liters! Btw: the biggest single cylinder engine I've witnessed in real life is the 10.3 liter engine that's used in the biggest version of the "Lanz Bulldog" tractor. Probably the biggest single cylinder that's used in a vehicle.
New challenge: build a motorcycle with a 10l Lanz Single-Cylinder Engine. And Second Challenge: Make this beast road-legal in Germany! There might be a slight problem with halting on Traffic lights when your bike is jumping each power stroke about 1m in height.
While that's big for internal combustion, for REALLY BIG, you need external combustion & steam. Try a bore of 100 inches (2.54m) with a stroke of 132 inches (3.35m). Okay, not practical in a bike (or any mobile structure really). Housed at the London Museum of Water & Steam, it's currently a non-runner, but it's sister engine is still running, and with a 90" (2.28m) cylinder (same stroke), is the largest single cylinder running engine in the world...
"The (radial airplane engine) cylendar was not considered to be suitable for use in a motorcycle because of the weight of the piston." I think you''d better talk with Alan Millyard who built a motorcycle engine with, not one, but TWO cylinders, also from an old radial airplane engine. His works beautifully. So I'm not sure what you were basing that statement on.

Cut the crappy background music, it makes the video unwatchable.

Indeed

Pretty cool mate, why the annoying music all the time though ? I'd much rather hear you explain, and hear some tinkering, or engine sounds.

In the 1970'S BSA had the 441 Victor Special.
It thumped pretty good up hills.
Their 500cc B50 was even larger
And the Phelon and Moore Panther model 120 at 645cc climbed hills like a Sherpa
Great video thanks

Am I missing something? You said the motor with 99mm bore and 111mm stroke had 958ccm. I calculated it to be around 850ccm. Pi/4 x bore² x stroke.

Allen Millyard built a 5-liter Vtwin motorcycle. That's two 2500cc cylinders.

Royal Enfield have shown for decades, you can build reliable, single cylinder engines.
The bison was just a ball smasher 😂
Royal Enfield India has also shown for dedcades, you can build not so reliable single cylinder engines.
The largest single was a motorcar engine built about 1901
You may ask, why would one go through such trouble? I'd say, if you loved NSU the way we do, if you've ever owned one, you'd know why.
What about BMW 5ltr single aircraft engine

What do you mean 1x4.2? Is that mean 4.2 to 1 compression ratio?
