Personal Exposure: What Zen can do for your street photography?

  • In this second iteration of "Personal Exposure", I talk about how shooting street in Milan made me realize how important a "beginner's mind" in photography can be. I show you excerpts from a beautiful article I found in Vol. 2 of HODINKEE magazine about the Japanese camera collector Hitoshi Tsujimoto. I briefly discuss my new couch in the background of my videos. And recommend the Saul Leiter retrospective at the Kunstfoyer in Munich which lasts until September 15, 2019.

I’m a Leica camera collector and photographer, which is why I follow your channel. In February, I watched this video as it was suggested to me by TH-cam. I never heard of Hodinkee before you mentioned their magazine. Since then I have become hooked into collecting high end vintage watches. Your video literally changed my life, thank you.

I always find it interesting when photographers talk about their personal thoughts and intentions of their work. I find your way of telling a story fascinating in a certain way. For me, sharing experiences about cameras and technology is really informative, but stories like this one stay more in my personal memory and sometimes bring back a different way of thinking. I would be glad if you could bring episodes in this format from time to time in the future.

Some of my favorite photos that I've taken are the ones that I didn't originally think were good, whether because of exposure, too grainy, not framed right and perhaps unable to be cropped easily, and so they sat in a folder somewhere for a year or so until I rediscover them later with a fresh eye.
I'm always blown away by certain Japanese photographers, for example, and how they welcome imperfections in their photos.
At the end of the day its really all about the story that the photo tells, and not the technical aspects of it.

Enjoyable, thoughtful video. I collect cameras to learn about them. Reading and watching is not the same as experiencing cameras. Thus, my camera collection is small and limited. I use nearly all my cameras, from the simple Brillant, to folders, to rangefinders, TLRs, to SLRs and DSLRs. I've learned a lot about waiting, convenience (ie auto focus), thinking. The Zen, as you put it, is in the experience, being in and of it. Admiration, too, for the technology and design and building behind each camera. And then there is film . . .

An enjoyable and interesting departure from the normal show format 👍. Quick comment on Milan as I was there visiting in May 19. Beautiful city to stroll around in with plenty of old and modern architecture to catch the eye. The natives are generally very cool, chic, cosmopolitan urbanites and they generally lens very well too if portraiture is your thing. One final comment; I left my camera with my new Voigtlander lens in the back of a taxi on our first night and only realized I’d left it in the taxi after the cab had driven off. You can imagine my utter horror. My wife was pretty pissed at me too as we feared losing the camera would sour the entire trip. However, the taxi had returned us to our hotel and after around 20-minutes, the driver returned holding my camera in the air. The relief was indescribable. I gave him a huge hug and a €30 tip for his trouble. Rest of our trip was amazing and my memory will always be sweeter when I remember the cab driver who kindly returned my camera.

I really enjoyed this video. It's nice to see an intelligent, thoughtful person speak about a an interesting range of topics. I am a very modest collector of cameras, but find I almost can not turn away from an interesting specimen. No Leicas in my collection, but cameras I can use, cameras that represent a historical period, and even cameras that are just cute or quirky. I love the mechanical nature of early cameras. They are a pleasure to see, to hold, and to manipulate. Certainly you know the pleasure of a great film advance or shutter sound. I am not interested in electronic cameras with a few exceptions. I love knurled knobs, levers, cranks, bellows, folding mechanisms and such. It is important to me for cameras to work and to shoot film through them whenever possible.

Hodinkee is a great magazine, even though I do not appreciate the way they collaborate with certain brands to release limited edition. But that's another story.
Collecting, whatever the material is, has common values: the appreciation for what the object means, the story it tells, and how the owner identifies himself to it. And budget never defined your degree of implication into collecting. I personally can't own a Leica or a Rolex, but my Spotmatic F and my Oris Pointer Date make me feel close enough to these values. And every collector should understand and respect this, in my opinion.
    Great video Max, as usual.

Another very interesting video Max, with a good range of topics covered. This idea of approaching each photo session with a ‘fresh pair of eyes’ is so true, but one which I find difficult to master, and I sometimes take very similar photos wherever I go. I am really trying to break this habit! The collecting mentality is familiar to me too...cameras, fountain pens, books and records, however, I am in the process of rationalising things just now! Best wishes.

Hello Max how are you? Yes its good for you to do this type video occasionally because theres much going on in life to talk about other than the products we are currently testing and it gives viewers insight into your day to day goals. I did a few episodes where I simply uploaded a video montage of my recent film photography images. 1000 Leica cameras in storage??? I dont know what to say about that, in a way its very impressive but shows prosperity is not always evenly divided in the world. thats a whole nother subject though. I will check out that magazine for sure..

An interesting question is what the difference is between a ‘camera collector’ and somebody who has a lot of cameras? Is it (and I think it is) about intention and theme. I acquire cameras because people offer me an old film camera or I see one in a charity shop and think it would be fun to use. Whereas I think ‘collecting’ starts when you start acquiring cameras made by a particular maker, or in a particular year, or something like that; and then you start looking for cameras to fit that theme. Oh, and that couch is great 👍

Am I a collector? Probably not. In 1960 I achieved an ambition by buying a 1935 Leica II but soon found that the viewfinder was so bad that I had to get the brightline finder. I had the f2 Summar lens which was far better than its reputation. Thanks to Walter Benser I used Agfacolor CT18 and the slides are still fine. In 1962 I traded the lot for a Pentax S3 which I found unbelievably superior to the Leica. I don't have the S3 but I have stuck with Pentax since. As they weren't (still aren't?) fashionable, it was possible in the '80s and '90s to pick up perfect cameras and lenses for peanuts. I have a fair collection right up to the Spotmatic F and it was only quite recently that I bought a digital SLR which was my first Pentax with a K mount! I would still like to get an early camera with the slow speed dial on the front to go with my 1958 135/3,5 lens.If I'd bought a Nikon F in 1962 I daresay I'd now have a Nikon collection but Pentax feels more exclusive!

A common theme among camera collections, watches, and classic sofas is an appreciation of beautiful works of functional art. Classic film cameras have intrinsic beauty - they can take amazing photographs and they are also beautiful pieces of mechanical and optical engineering. Classical mechanical watches are the same- they tell time but they are also mechanical pieces of artwork. The classical leather sofa has intrinsic beauty but you can also sit on it and enjoy the total experience. I get great satisfaction in using, appreciating and looking at these magnificent creations that blend intrinsic beauty in their design with remarkable functionality. You can enjoy them by using them for their intended purpose, or merely by looking at them as pieces of art. Does this make sense?

Good day Sir, I have really just recently got back into film ....collecting well since its a financial thing with me , I try to get deals as much as possible.....but I collect from a desire from nostalgia , I did photography in 1984 in High School in Canada....but also my father worked in a Film Processing plant Winnipeg Photo at that time .....so as my father has passed away FILM is dear and near to me ......I have so far Canonete 45 , 2 Konica S2 {one from my father which I restored the other I bought for the cover and now use as a street shooter saving my fathers old cam for collection only}, Mamiya 645E , Lubitel 166B, ARGUS Brick , Pentax SP1000, Minolta XG1, and one of my favorites a NIKKORMATT EL .....all SLR types I have collected a number of lenses for them as well....but back to the point Collecting is not just about price but even if your budget constraints are there ....the cams you can get cheap and working are abundant .....I forgot my latest find a RICOH 35 ....1955 very fun ....clean and working Not a Leica but maybe i can fantasize .....YOU HAVE A GREAT CHANNEL ....so awesome to be subscribed .....and YES I AM of SLOVENIAN Heritage...my parents ran from communism in 1957 to Austria and then cam to Canada......also I have started collected DIGITAL Classics , NIKON D700 being one of those cameras that I dreamed of years ago but never had the free cash to invest ...but film grounds me to the PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS and gives me the ultimate pleasure , film aslo make me a better DIGITAL Photographer ....to many people rely on the EVF these days , I say do it with a limit of 36 shots and stop spraying and praying or relying on POST PROCESSING ...thanks again be well

I wouldn't call myself a collector, but I like photography, taking photos and if I like a camera that I see and I can afford it, I usually buy it. Sometimes I'll buy them for others, like my brother and others in my family. Or, it's a special occasion like a birthday and I know the person likes photography and/or just likes taking pictures but isn't into the whole process of photography. Same with lenses, too. Getting into photography can be had for a lot cheaper than some other hobbies, like amateur astronomy and astrophotography. That I can tell you from experience!!! But, the two (photography and astronomy) go hand in hand. One thing that I don't get with others and that's just sticking to one camera system and that's it. Then arguing about the merits or demerits of other systems. As long as the camera does what I want it to and I like the look and feel of the camera, I'll get it. As they say, variety is the spice of life :)

In My daytime job (threat assessments) I try to incorporate Sun Tzu’s way of thinking. Would you consider trying to do a video over Sun Tzu and looking at light, ISO, the weather, your own skills as a photographer, shutter speeds, your equipment, etc etc etc as your “enemies/friends” When trying to assess for the best / worst outcome of a situation/photograph? Just a thought. Very much respect and thank you from a humble Dane :-)

I don't consider myself a camera collector but I do have a collection of cameras. I think the human mind has a desire in general for what it does not have. We do not have a camera or a feature and so we go out and seek it. For me, I continuously seek to experience new cameras to use and to compare the experience of using it with my other cameras. I only purchase cameras for the purpose of using it. Even if I like a camera, I will not buy it unless I intend on using it.

Yes... collecting... I'm afraid that for some, the collecting urge has to be regarded as a negative character trait. For some it is the ownership, the having something you've demonstrated your ability to own, to have over other people, that is the attraction. I belong to a few photography groups and people will post pictures of their, say, 46 Olympus Trips, or 12 Leica M's etc. which just seems a shame to me as their collection that sits in a display cabinet represents a lot of people with no cameras. This lust for having pushes the prices up so would be users have to pay up or go without. Much collecting is about money and status, but, if only these people allowed the thought in, they might realise it was more about "look at me looking at me" than actually being a worthy pastime. Isn't it often a demonstration of avarice?

I like to think I despise collectors yet here I am with a cupboard full of cameras that fascinate me. Nothing special. All beaten up but on a theme of how the rangefinder models fanned out across the world after WW2. The Barnack Leica copies remained pickled behind the Iron curtain, died out in the UK but rapidly evolved into modern cameras in Japan. Meanwhile in Germany they became something of a luxury brand. (I ❤ my M6). They tell the story of the world economy pretty well. Wooden field cameras tell a similar story at the beginning of the 20th century.

Re 1000 Leicas: Unfortunately there are extremely wealthy art collectors who place expensive paintings in climate controlled vaults to hold them safely until they are resold. The paintings are investments. Never to be viewed. Some collections/pieces are worth more than the buildings that contain them. For example, Leonardo Da Vinci "Salvator Mundi" painting sold for $460M (adjusted for inflation).

Collectors are the bloodsuckers of Art world. They never enjoy things in the way they were originally intended.
-They never let someone else enjoy things neither
-They drive prizes up by being narcissistic
-Cameras where made to produce images, to enhance and recollect memories and watch the beauty of the world. Not to put them in a secluded location in a paper bag. That’s borderline sad

I love this series, I very much love this channel... But I do think the phrase "Personal Exposure" sounds like a term for flashing. Sorry.
