Incredible images-both Schaller's still photos and the moving images. Probably the best looking movie about street photography I've ever seen. Beautiful.
Yeah that was a great video Allen, great images I'm just getting into the black and white. But you City people have all this opportunity I'm in western Oklahoma small town America. I'll keep watching your videos very interesting and informative.
What?! Really surprised he is just 4 years into the game. I’ve been following his IG for almost 3 years now, and his work always felt ripe unforced right from the start. Just another reason to keep on following Alan.
This is the best video about photography I've ever seen! It shows the essence of street photography so clearly and precisely! Thank you for this amazing piece!
"A conveyor belt for photographing" -- brilliant observation Alan. Sometimes overwhelming. Other times frustrating. Yes, music and photography have much in common -- If there are no harmonics then even the most beautiful scene will be flat and atmosphere-less. I agree with your approach- as you put it "space" // as I put it "location location" are essential to a well created street photo. Cheers from Chicago ----
I did some street photography while I was in China and I have to say that it was very liberating. The idea that you can create art from just walking or driving down the streets is amazing. Some of my favorite shots have come from this attempt at street photography. Great film, well produced. Congratulations!
The filmmaking is so well thought-of, balanced, smooth and in sync with the photographer's work, that it makes it actually over-the-top class value, without being too flashy. Truly beautiful, some frames were even better than the photos! Really enjoyed watching this. Keep it up!
I come back to this video anytime I feel the need of inspiration to get better, the cinematography is not only sublime but expresses the art of Mr. Shaller in a perfect and balanced way. Thank you for this.
Dear Allan, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your exceptional work. I am constantly inspired by your creations, and every time I have the privilege of witnessing your work, I gain valuable knowledge and insights. Thank you for sharing your expertise and passion with the world. Yours truly, pierangelo
Mesmerized.. so beautiful. I had to watch it twice. First enjoying the beautiful cinematic video and the jaw dropping street photo, and second, actually hearing what the master said in the video. just wow.. truly inspiring
This guy is the one whom inspires me to get off my bum, and figure out the BnW world. I love BnW Photography, and Mr Schaller style and knowledge is truly 1st class and perfect in my opinion! Mary Alpern, still inspires me from her Dirty Windows project. I have made several photos that have competed well because of her. (Not directly, though that would be awesome) Thank You For Sharing This Video; 😁 Iowa
Thanks for sharing! Loved the music and the photos. Both dear to my heart. I feel you when you said we miss a lot of shots. Right place and time but just missed the shot. Many a times, I thought to myself, that would have been a great shot. Then moved on. Hope to see more!
@@Global_1434 I don't need your general truth opinion. Lenses have different characters. I've been studying them for over 20 years. Leica lenses have their own color science and touch. Leica, Zeiss, Schneider, Voigtlander, Meyers-Optik are not the same. Less mentioning Fujifilms GF, Canon EF or Ricoh GR. And you are too hasty and superficial to denounce with cliche statement. I do place much faith in tools and brands so to speak, as I do enjoy good artistic works taken with Leica, Diana, Polaroids PX100, Pentax 645, and even pinhole cameras LOL. And they are not the same ! If you can't tell the difference between Leica lens and the others, that's your own inadequacy. With all my knowledge, am I not entitled to have my own preference ?
@@parisbase4639 You talk about how superficial and inadequate my knowledge is about lenses and their corresponding characteristic colours. Yet, Alan Schaller's work is visibly in black and white. Now, refer to your initial 'magical in the right hands' comment.
@@Global_1434 Can you manage a more intelligent argument ? I don't talk about color characteristics in my 1st statement - "Leica in the right hands is truly magical." It's my praise to Alan Schaller and my appreciation of the Leica gear. I only said "color science" in my later retort as a broader example to illustrate the differences. Alan is using Monochrom Typ-246 and coupled with a superb Summilux 24mm f1.4 ASPH. Together they worked magic. Study the photos at 1:02, 1:03, 2:40, 3:38, 4:28, 4:55. Study more at other websites, the Leica masters' works, the large prints in exhibition and even some very well-printed photography books. The beautiful grain (some brands only manage ugly artefacts), the rich tonal gradation, the sharpness/softness blend that the lens could manage...etc. So typically Leica. I don't say other brands' cameras can't take beautiful pictures. But the Leica rendering always has this special touch. If you haven't known and seen enough, be modest and respectful. Too hasty to denounce the others would only expose your ignorance, which after all is not a bad thing at all.
Beautifully shot film! And beautiful photos. I just had a look at his Flickr, and the quality if off the chain! Remarkable that he's only relatively recently taken up photography...
Danke aus München! Thanks from Munich. Not a single word about what camera and lens Alan is using. Because it is not the Leica that makes these great, artistic, vivid pictures: it's his EYE! My opinion regarding b/w: its never a must for me. So I shoot RAW on my Nikon. We had a big Saul Leiter expo here: great street photography in colour. Muted tones, many on rainy days... also very beautiful. Sometimes you can't catch the essence of a motive in b/w. But mostly it helps.
I just came across Alans work on Flickr, and am stunned by it. His photos are about the only ones I've seen on there that are really genuinely visually interesting. They are sensational, his ability to sense space, condense a composition, evoke drama, include powerful graphic elements, while making it look effortless and spontaneous. They capture your attention! Even though they are digital, they have that deep contrasty old school feel like Capa's, Kertesz'sor even weegee's pictures. I VERY rarely dish out compliments willy nilly, but Alan is a truly gifted artist
Thank you so much for featuring one of my favourite photographers! It is such a learning experience to know what goes inside their head when they create such amazing photographs. The production level of this video is fantastic.
Amazing how this video shares so much information and detail in just over 5 minutes. Indeed, nicely put together and well presented short doc/film. Thank you!
Alan, I found this deeply inspiring. I shoot "street-style" as a utility photographer - i.e., shooting whatever is needed for my yoga sangha and community. I was a staff photographer 1972-74 at Runner's World and still (rarely) do sports. Point being, your approach is mine whether for sports, in K-8 classrooms, scheduled shoots or day-long events: it's always about finding ways to prepare the whole "chain" of photographic tools including heart and mind, by releasing the ego's desires and being as completely in the moment as possible. Like you I find it a wonderfully expansive, quietly moving experience. To recap, this film was a sweet, wonderful discovery. Thank you!
Thank you for made the video, I just started on it as a hobby but I discovered how wonderful it is, still getting problems to capture what sometimes my eyes sees, frustration and happiness seems to come holding hands. But somehow it is a relief listen a professional talking about sometimes not getting the shot they want, thank you again for share so your experiences and information.
True, re: the single location. Here in Seattle, I have many of them that I have used over and over again. Come back to the same scene one day, or at a different time of day, or different season, and it will always be different. Some of my scenes have changed over time, due to demolition and new construction. Some don't exist any longer.
Beside the great images from Alan i love his story because i am pro musician for over 20 years and also need a break. I re-started photography and it is like soul-healing. Also i love black and white, it has so much expression. Thanx for this video such an inspiration :-)

The measure of a person's talent lies neither in the number of years behind a camera nor the build of a certain camera model. Talent is talent and talent can develop for some souls whereas for others their talent remains totally mundane despite lugging a badass camera for years on end.
ok but why is this video cinematography so good?
