Part 1: African Safari : Kruger National Park in a New Land Rover Defender and Suzuki Jimny

- In this episode we visit Kruger National Park where we travel from Orpan Gate to Tsendzi Camp. I also review what we have done to the New Defender and Jimny and share some of the amazing animal encounters along the way.

Completely agree with you on the new Defender by the way. It’s the future. Despite still owning Defenders I choose to overland in a Disco 3 because it’s more comfortable and therefore practical I think.
@@TheOverlandLegend I also had some excellent trips in my D3. They actually have better packing space also compared to my New Defender.
To prevent that bong sound for seat belts, invest in a couple of seat belt ends from a scrap yard (can also be bought on line) to plug into your seat belt sockets when you are in the Bush. Have been using them for years and as you are only doing about 20kms/hr, you are not really in any danger.
Already sorted. With the Landy’s you switch on the ignition and plug in the drivers seat belt 10 times consecutively and the gong gets turned off. Visa Verda to turn it back on.
Now to find a way to switch off the door open gong 😂
This procedure worked on my model year 2022 D110 to disable the seatbelt chime: close the door, switch the ignition on (don't start the engine) and then, buckle and unbuckle the driver seat belt 10 times in a row, waiting just enough time for the seatbelt light to come on each time. After unbuckling for the 10th time, you should eventually hear a ding / bong as confirmation, and the reminder should be muted from now on. Repeat the same procedure to reactivate the beltminder. Bruce and team, great job on the video. You have a very nice demeanor, very low-key and enjoyable to listen to. I'd rather listen to the animals and your talking, than the music which tended to overwhelm them. Great stuff. Working my way through the series now. Also, re the inverter and panels, I'm sure you'll cover it later, but in my LR4 (Disco 4), I just charge my Goalzero from the 12VDC while driving while also leaving laptops, ipads, cameras plugged into IT. That will charge the battery and the devices throughout the day (truck charging battery and battery charging devices). I've found this doesn't seem to draw too much from the alternator, and keeps things fully charged. No need for panels at all which are as you've learned expensive, bulky, and kind of a headache. Hope to hear more from you about this in future episodes.
Hopefully you will notice an improvement in animal sounds in my latest episodes, I’ve worked hard to try and improve in sound. Learning all the time!
I am looking at doing an episode on my Defender and my rental vehicles to show the battery setups if there is interest.
I like to keep it simple and therefore reliable.

@@OverlandingwithBruce Yes I think that we all have a lot to learn from each other especially about keeping things simple. I think with the advent of these light and portable lithium battery packs, that it's giving us all an opportunity to rethink some of the old dual-battery vehicle based systems and even the solar panels which really don't add much (not in comparison to charging from the engine). Great series - jealous of your amazing trip.

Thanks for the lekker video! With the seat belts on our Disco4 we just connect them behind the seat so they are always clipped in. Only do this in the reserve at low speed obviously.
I've recently bought my dream car.. Defender 110 (2011). Loving it! I wave at the new ones.. They're still defenders :)

Thanks you AidenRIR. On my D4 I was able to turn off the chimes by switching on the ignition without starting and then plugging and unplugging the seat belt 10 times.
2011 110s are great as they upgraded the TC system from 11MY. Awesome vehicles.

@@AidanRIR pleasure. If it doesn’t ping after ten times keep going to about 15 or 18..and if still nothing start again. Turn ignition off lock then repeat process.
To activate again afterwards you just repeat the process.

Enjoyable video. Preferred the bush sounds over (what my son called) “the scary movie song” at about 27min. I’ve also been getting more waves lately, but less so from the new Defender owners. I blame the salespeople, they should be telling their customers about it.

No Kruger is very affordable so not expensive. Tsendzi is more expensive and if you catch it when it’s busy like when we were there then it detracts from the experience.
But yes the natural sounds are best!👍🏻

Thank you Keith. That’s so true. The other more common chairs don’t last and I’ve tried the cheap and the expensive ones. They all fail in some way. My latest OzTrail chairs have started falling apart after about 3 trips so am looking forward to see how long these last but I am confident if there are any problems Eezi Awn will sort them out.

I like the comments on the new Defender, it gives one a good overview. I'm very impressed with the few negative/irritating things. I own a L/D Discovery Sport 2.2Lt. What do you think of this vehicle doing overlanding and or camping? I'm not a guy that will put my vehicle to the utmost test (just for the sake of testing). Do you have any experience of towing a camping trailer with a Discovery Sport and or with you new Defender?
I hope you had a good trip in the National Kruger.
Sorry I have no experience in the Discovery Sport at all so can not comment but will say you don’t need all the stuff that some claim you need to overland.
The New Defender tows brilliantly and is very stable.
Hey Bruce, thanks for the lekker video. With regards to your solar panels, do you have a mppt or pwm solar charge controller? PWMs never get the full power out of panels. Also how empty was your battery when you were doing your testing? If the batteries were almost full, then your charge controller would have been at the end of the charge cycle instead of being at the bulk charging stage.
Thanks so much. Battery was at about 60% in the mornings and I use a MPPT Victron 20amp unit.
What was a concern is that when I unplugged the extra panels and had only one connected, the rate of charge would reduce even further, by more than half which I think negates the fact that it’s anything to do with the installation or regulator. I am going to try one panel on this weeks trip to Mana pools and see what I get out of it.

Mb the land rover guys,had in mind that camping is mostly operated coming from the rear door , in that way your bettery would be intact energywise .
Possibly but there should be no reason for the dash and entertainment system to power up when opening any of the passenger doors

Advise for discouraging elephants is mix chilli with petroleum gel/ vaseline body moisturiser. Cover strips of cloth and hang on fence perimeter. This is used in India by small farmers to protect crops. Elephants do not like the scent and stay away.
100% Jack and they do the same in Zimbabwe to protect the farmers crops, but in these areas if you don’t carry anything that attracts them then they don’t bother you at all. The way I figure it is I am visiting their territory so I have to respect them by not carrying things like oranges etc that may attract them.
You should look at your MPPT and what limits it has. For example a Victron MPPT 75/15 will output a maximum of 15 amps so you will need a bigger MPPT (maybe a 100/30) to get more out of your panels.
Thank you. It was a 20amp MPPT. It doesn’t explain why the 80w 10 year old glass solar panel gives better output than the 150w flexible fold up panels though on the same system with same MPPT and same batteries while next to each other in the same sun at the same angle. Loving it, the defender a capable 4x4, but I think the issue here on the new defender is about the air suspension, can you shade more light on that, if it it fails how catastrophic is air suspension failure when you are in the middle of no where, because we are just afraid to go with air suspension in the deep jungles of africa.
It’s the same with any vehicle. I have seen broken leaf springs as well as failed springs. Air suspension is not what it used to be it’s improved 10 fold and even the defender is different to the other landy products. I’ve also owned 1x discovery 3, 2x discovery 4’s and a discovery 5 that were all used off road to far off the beaten places. Never had a problem because I know how to take care of it. Most failures have been due to overloading, abuse and not knowing air suspension limitations causing the pumps to overheat. Also with air suspension if it fails you can still drive, uncomfortably but you can still drive. With broken coils and leaf springs you can not always continue to drive.

Hi Vernon. It’s called a RTS RTS DV-2135s . Not the fanciest radio but works perfectly for our requirements and it is nice and small.

Nice video. About music vs bush sounds, generally bush sounds are better. Music is good in some instances, if not the highly repetitive stuff some people play very loudly on the soundtrack. THAT gets annoying.
Thank you. I agree. I am trying to create a feeling for anyone who watches but using all the natural sounds. Ive also ordered a decent microphone so that I can improve this in future. I also get a bit tired of all the same type of music (although good) being used.

What type of charge controller are you using a pwm charge controller is not efficient also what type of batteries are you using agm batteries battle to take current during the absorption stage. Lifepo4 batteries have much better ability to absorb current up to full charge.
I am using a Victron 20 amp regulator. The panels are not as efficient as my glass panel and are 10x the price. They have also deformed in the sun and are wavy not flat any more which is probably contributing to their inefficiency. Apart from the ease of carrying, I do not believe they are worth the expense.
@@OverlandingwithBruce the flexible panels are normally about 20% less efficient. If you have agm batteries it could also contribute to efficient absorption.
100% but these are more like 50% less efficient. Tested my 8 year old 80w glass panel against the 150w flexible panel and the glass produced more. Tested right next to each other same batteries everything. Very disappointed!

The comments from the senders were guite ok, but if you must take it off, rather put the relative word describe the area or scene (which will be enough). The comments you add on are in lots of cases a duplication. Example; all know Bloemfontein is in the Free State, not necessary to say or add on its in the Free State Province. I suppose there are no no not blind people watching your videos who want to hear where and what the video describe.
