Great video, thanks. Sometimes running around trying to find treasure and keeping an eye on your ship (I am playing solo most of the time) you don't aways get time to appreciate the work that's gone into setting up the game for incoming updates. The times I have explored has shown me there is a fair amount of content underneath the surface. Again, thanks for keeping us all informed with your speculative insights.

I would really like a video about Thieves’ Haven. There are a bunch of different types of paintings and lots of “buildings”, as I call them. There is also a big ship that seemed to have been left under construction. Pretty cool island and also one of the most beautiful!

I think based on the ancient skellies and the way the angelic creature looks red and possibly bearded, I think this is the reason they crashed here. Maybe one of flamehearts first attacks?

I suggest you explore the paintings on Plunder Valley, because I've seen many strange paintings and shrines that seem to have been made by people who worshiped these weird bird creatures, and there is some evidence that suggests that they sacrificed people to them by throwing them off a cliff.
Definitely check out plunder valley next, definitely some weird shit goin on over there

I think the last picture you showed is the beginning of the two survivors story. the middle picture in my opinion resembles an pirate captain (Hat with a bit of red on top, face and beard) and I think the captain turned into the big evil Merfolk we see in the survivors painting.
MrBegebub I feel like this is a more likely version of the story. The 2 people were children raised by the captain who's ship crashed (and who was initially saved by a mermaid). It was later he who was chosen and turned into a mermaid. He became the orange mermaid which rather than being evil is simply more important. In the picture with the orange mermaid and the ship and storm, the orange mermaid is calling upon more merfolk to save the sailors. Whadda ya think?

I believe the last picture is an easter egg relating to perfect dark, another game by rare which also has a figurehead in the game.
MrBegebub Unfortunately that's not possible. Those paintings were made by the ancients, the people who inhabited the Sea of Thieves before the pirates came.

Much appreciated video. I always take time when exploring often spending an hour just staring at a few on one island. It's fun letting your mind wonder and imagine what they may mean. The last one with the big headed humanoids and single angelic humanoid is quite interesting, and I agree with the other, may be extraterrestrial!
It would be sweet to have a boss fight with the evil mermaid, maybe in the future. kind of like the megaladon and kraken, fingers crossed for that. And the backstory is also really cool, if this is right, and I'm guessing it is 👌

I think the freaky picture you saw was of the Queen looking mermaid from the Pirates life Disney update and the 2 big headed things are the crab/clam looking monsters as well... what do you think?

So I think that there are stages to being transformed into a mermaid. Basically, around the middle of the transformation, they help crew members who fall overboard their ship back on, making them good in the ancients eyes, and explaining why the mermaids who bring us to to our ship retain huminoid facial features. At the last phase of transformation they become reliant on humans, needing to feed off of them, making them evil in the ancients eyes, and explaining why they have no huminoid physical features
Wouldn't it be great if when it gets released when you find the "megaladon" it swims around for a bit and gets consumed by a monster way bigger and like nothing we expected. Most likely won't happen but it would be cool.

I Think that in the painting showing the transformation of the sailor to a merfolk i think the third Stage is him becoming a Siren.
This is the first video I've watched of yours...and honestly I'm really digging it. I've been curious if there was any lore involved with the game, especially seeing that a lot of the paintings could be something important. So yeah I'm sub, and lookin' for more. ^_^

I would assume the Mermaid that transports us is the same person stranded on the Island who had transformed and is now saving others from being stranded like he was. As far as the evil mermaid, possibly his partner who was stranded on the island with him? Maybe downcast by their fate this person turned to destroy ships to strand others so they could suffer the same fate.
The odd character in the end painting could be Captain Flame heart with 2 skeletons.

I like the concept of mer-folk changing into mer-beasts on full moons and swarming the ship wrecks and other underwater locals at this time, would make for some interesting gameplay if the mer-folk we always know to bring us to our ships, start attacking us instead or transporting us to somewhere other then our ship to be eatin. lol
That last painting is a Perfect Dark reference to Joanna Dark. She saved a big-headed grey alien named Elvis. She was a redhead like the picture shows and is in that pose for some of the art from the game. Also Perfect Dark was made by Rare.

my theory is that the picture with the fully formed evil version of the mermaid survivor is dragging the crew off the ship and leaving two people on the boat to crash on a different island and restart the cycle on a different isle p.s could you also feature this theory on your next merfolk video as it would be really kind and your one of my favourite youtubers

Perfect Dark - Joanna Dark - Elvis ? looks very similar with the red hair and alien heads.

I'm sure you've long since discovered the answer, but I didn't immediately see any comments explaining the last painting. It's a reference to Perfect Dark, another Rare game we've all heard of! The middle mermaid figure has the main character from Perfect Dark's hair. I barely played the Rare Replay version, so I know very little about Perfect Dark. But I know that much haha. Great videos!
I would love it if you would explore Plunder Valley next. The island has a sizable collection of both cave paintings and statues, all of which are themed after falcons. After watching this video, I was inspired to make more of my own discoveries, and went back to Plunder valley to have another look around. What I found this time was LOTS of evidence pointing towards one thing: Human Sacrifice. I know that you could make a fascinating video that questions the intentions of the Eagle creature and the tribe that worshipped it, so please check it out for your next video. You won't be dissapointed! :-)
Last picture looks like a Manta type mermaid...maybe a queen? Only one that can legitamately reproduce and have offspring maybe??
4:10 It looks like the diamond has backwards 'arrows' extending towards both of the merfolk. On the lower halves of the diamond, on the left a full moon and on the right a crescent moon. It's probably just denoting the merfolk's forms further.

The creepy picture at the end is clearly a Pirate King or something. He has two revolvers crossed over his chest; Tampa Bay Buccaneer style, but w/ guns, and his hat is clearly an 18th century Captains hat. Right?
Seems to me that the last picture is just advertising the Huntress figurehead. Redhead? Crossed arms? Holding twin pistols? I don't think the last picture holds any actual lore.
maybe it's just the crazy in me but. anyone else kinda notice the last photo creepily resembled Gray Aliens with the large heads but small bodies. and maybe the picture above it with the wings, was the ancients way of saying that the Grays had means of flight.....?
I feel like it could be possible that the picture with all the people falling overboard could also be the PREQUEL to the two survivors getting stranded. Notice that two people remain on the boat when everyone else falls off. Maybe those two are the ones that then made it to shore, but were eventually picked up/picked off by the mermaids in some way or another.
wait, so what I got from this is that eventually when they add the merfolk update, there might be a boss fight in a full moon(on the sea of thieves day and night cycle or maybe not) where you have to go to the middle of a storm at a certain time(I believe midnight) during the full moon, and in said storm there will be a merfolk boss that can throw your ship in the air and if you fall into the water the smaller merfolk will kill you if you aren't fast enough...and maybe while you don't do the quest to kill the boss there will be no merfolk too bring you back too the ship..yeah I like how that sounds...anyone going too address the huge rock spike in the exact middle of the map? Oh also, there is an iceland somewhere to the left of the "spike" that don't apear on the map(I crashed into it by accident when I wasn't looking) that has a pretty big underwater rock spire surrounded by a sunken boat right in the middle of it, it has been awhile since I have seen it but yeah, there's that.
I think next you should do plunder valley. It’s paintings and carvings are very interesting. It’s paintings are mainly about birds
so THIS is why we have sirens... im thoroughly surprised that Rare had season 3 thought up of since launch
The final picture is probably a reference to Perfect Dark, a previous Rare game. The red headed woman being Joanna and the big headed creature/s being Elvis the alien.

That last painting looks like it could be the Joanna Dark (like the figurehead) and aliens from the Perfect Dark games. Just a thought. =]
5:18 . im not sure what the 2 large headed things are but I can take a guess at the middle thing. if you look at its head its red. and to me its in the shape of a captains hat. I think this is the first or A pirate merfolk. To back me up, its shoulder pads could be some dual flint lock pistols with the pointy bits looking down the elbows. And for the merfolk part, notice it has a tail. It is, however, split from the body unlike the other merfolk pictures. I can only assume he is transforming or.... being captured and eaten....
The odd, big headed creatures in the painting, look similar to either extra-terrestrials or some form of squid-headed humanoid. Perhaps related to the kracken???
The last picture, the middle man looks like a captain with 2 pistols to me. The red thing looked for me like a hat, a captains hat. And the wing are way to small and weirly shaped for wings id say hes holding 2 pistol, maybe with arms crossed at his chest. Cool vid btw
Im fairly certain you're right about the eventuality of hostile mermaids but the moon cycle metamorphosis painting depicts one of the men being turned into a mer folk throughout the moon cycle, he goes from human to a human with a tail to a full on mermaid with fins and all, my guess for the angelic creature is showing that the mermaid ship crest is an exaggeration, and mockery of "big headed" or perhaps dramatically imaginative sailors who believed the mers looked more human than fish
The weird one at the end is a reference to perfect dark. The figure at the top looks exactly like the huntress figurehead (Joanna Dark) and the two large headed figures are mayans from perfect dark.
Looks like the last picture is the Huntress, the figurehead we can obtain, also has red hair and 2 pistols. Maybe something like that?
If you need sugestions for more islands lore i recommend Plunder Valley, it has something to do with an eagle or type of bird

Great video! Not sure if it’s been mentioned but that last painting is definitely Johanna dark from perfect dark. The painting has the red hair and dual pistols. Also in the original perfect dark you deal with short large headed aliens that match the painting as well.
Maybe the storm is covering up mermaids on the Final the Final Phase and when the storm end. The merfolk will be released
I believe the final painting could refer to some sort of new enemy type, possibly aliens, as the middle figure almost looks like it would be a ‘mother’ or queen.
Im sure it has been mentioned, but if not, the alien and the floating red hair painting is obviously a nod to Perfect Dark (another Rare game).
Hate to ruin the possible Alien Theories but I believe that one's an Easter Egg to another game that the figurehead of the lady with the guns is refering to as well. I saw a video on this.

the one that showed him transforming from a human to the Evil mermaid there is a theory that is that a human under the curse over time will transform from a human stage 1 to the merfolk that you know of that will try to help you out of the sea and then the 3rd stage which seems to be a evil merfolk in my theory i think the 2nd stage is trying to help you so that a 3rd stage wont find you because if they do they will most likely curse or infect you with the curse and the 3rd is like a vampire im thinking something like they have a uncontrollable desire to make people merfolk and the last painting the middle one might be the The first one to be a mermaid and the people beside her or him seems to be infected humans or normal humans which could signify two things if it is infected humans it could signify that the infected humans are drawn to "patient zero" and if it is normal humans it could signify that the merfolk were once friends until "patient zero" transformed into a third stage and then merfolk and human now hate each other which is why merfolk might choose people 1 because they have a grudge and they want them to feel the pain of being a merfolk 2 they might believe that being a human is bad so they transform them into a merfolk
i can tell you what the creature in the middle of the picture is refering to if you want xD its refering to a easter egg and a figurehead we getting soon. Thats joanna dark from the perfect dark series my friend and the creatures next to her probably aliens. She has the red hair and holds pistols. The mermaids are the ones that we know the tickets back to where ships because mermaids are known for that for helping Sailors well a siren is known to luring Sailors to their deaths by singing getting them to jump in the water and swim down where they'd soon drown and if their werewolf analysis was true the mermaids would shift into sirens on a full moon and maybe some of them decide to stay at Sirens we don't know but that's just a theory but that's just a theory

i think that last painting is a perfect Dark easter egg, center character looks like joanna dark in the same position as she is on her figure head. the two creatures are likely Maians from the game, who look like your typical large headed gray alien

You totally missed the cave paintings that led to the eagle shrine. That is definitely part of the story I think we only see a fraction of what's going on there in this video.
