Glad to see the mermaid treasures are getting their due respect. I've been solo diving shrines and treasuries since day one! And I'm glad to say I've only been attacked twice out of hundreds of dives. If you ever do this again, I'd recommend checking wrecks for bottles, as they'll occasionally spawn there.
Been doing them actively as well, I do 4-5 hour stacks before gold rush where I do Shrine of Tribute & Ocean's Fortune back to back. If a friend is available, they take the boat to either seaforts close to them and complete them while I'm busy completing the shrines, then we go back to collect the loot from the mermaid. We earn twice the money thay way + we can alert eachother if we see another ship close by. So far I've only had 5 encounters out of 400+ dives, 2 of which were friendly. One gally came next to my boat and started discretely loading everything on to their boat, I came back up as they were finishing and we looked at eachother then laughed. I accepted but asked that in exchange I be the one to put the loot on their boat. That's how I got my "Glorious Gift Giver" title during Christmas 2021, 2 hours after the title became unlockable). If you wanna play someday, hit me up :) My Xbox name is RemiDaYeen
I think we just got unlucky cus we did check a number of wrecks (didn't make it into the final cut) and never found a bottle, though I do remember having gotten them that way before
When I first read "breath of the sea" I expected an item that somehow gives our Pirates underwater breathing. 😒 The fact that it was just another sort of treasure, really made my piipii go limp.
@@CliffTheStoryGuy I'm fairly new, only been playing the past month. I haven't gotten any coral bottles from wrecks yet. But I do find them fairly often on the south islands around plunder valley. I'd saying every 3-4 islands I visit down there I get a breathe of the sea quest. It could just be my own luck though lol
Shrine of Ancient Tears is my Mermaid Shrine stomping grounds. I'm able to solo it in about 5 minutes now. The long round cave part? There's no order. Just make sure you flip all the switches in time to open the door to the next part of the cave, all while lighting all the torches as well (there's 3-5 per section). The switches open the path and the torches open the treasure room that guarantees an Ancient chest. But the Bottle can be found in the middle room after you drain the water at the start. It's a great place solo if you know what to do since there's no platforming. And the shrine is to the far south so few people are around.
I love the little audio touches done in editing, like with the second shrine you gave the audio that echo feel as if you were really in there and talking and your voices were reverberating off the walls.
A new Cliff video! I’m not sure if I said this before but your content got me into SOT and helped me out a ton. From my first (and only) ancient skeleton just in 10 hours of playing To OOS 75 in 400 hours

I have also been grinding four breaths of the sea because then I will get the legend of the sunken kingdom title and I’m close to getting it.
I've been on a grind to hit Pirate Legend. Got 50 in the Gold Hoarders and I'm working alone to get 50 in Merchant Alliance. Then, on Community Day, me and my Floridian Friends are working together on the blasted Order Of Souls. Reputation 33, the struggle is REAL! BUT I've been looking better in PVP! I've been beating off boarders from two islands away. Thanks for your videos to teach me, Cliff!
I am a proud mermaid shrine solo-er, it's really just a matter of good scouting and speed to know when it's safe. plus having allies on the server helps. (the shrines are so underrated they're some of the funnest puzzle/combat content in SOT).
I've found it's a pretty simple matter of just doing a map check, theft check, tucker check, and horizon check before you summon the loot up. Only got ambushed regardless once that way. Even if your ship gets sunk while you're down there, the loot doesn't appear until you say so. Or if you're really paranoid you can sail away and rowboat back to the shrine, which I've also had to do before due to the server's reaper 1 turning into a reaper 5 and heading my way while I was under.
@@bobmcbob49 I empty all of my supplies into a storage crate and take the crate with me. Once I hit the shrine/treasury, I put the storage crate in the mermaid statue, that way if someone rolls up on my boat, they get nothing, or if they sink it, I mermaid back to a fresh spawned boat with default supplies while my storage crate is still safe with all my loot. I've only had one crew spawn camp me, guess they were pissed my boat didn't have any supplies, bet they were even more pissed when I scuttled my boat, lol.
0:43 The addition of the Sovereigns accepting Hunter’s Call stuff has made me realize just how much of the difficulty of the Hunter’s Call came from just not having enough energy to sail to a seapost. Looting every shipwreck I find and dumping the fish with the Sovereigns is leveling up the Call at a nicely stable rate.
It's nice to see other people figuring out the mermaid shrines. This month I will definitely join the of master hunters. Good luck to every person gridding HC. Everyone can do this. Hard work and patience are the key. ^_^
I was doing curse of sorrows for my friend last time when I was playing, and we took a Coral message in a bottle and the shrine that we were in for the key that we needed to open chest was the same one that breath of the Sea was hidden in (we didnt even look at that quest we got from coral bottle), and if thats not enough, it was the ruby one
Welcome back Capt'n, and welcome to the HC 50 Club. Enjoy sailing a ship that screams "Nothing you do to me can be worse than what I have done to myself..."
For anyone looking to grind BotS, crystal bottles seem to have a spawn rate tied to the server. Some guy on Reddit did a test on it and found that some servers spawn a lot of coral bottles around and some spawn almost none. If you go too long without finding one, server hopping can turn your luck around completely. This is similar to why some servers seem to spawn more ocean crawlers, while others spawn more skellies or ghosts.
My favorite loot, just for the value to the hunters call and because I love siren shrines. Coral curse was the first curse I got and I'm still one of the only, if not the only one in my group that can buy the voyage for it. Despite doing them solo 90% of the time I've never once had a shrine backfire on me in a way that wasn't recoverable. Even did a rowboat trick where I let a reaper chase my unmanned ship while I rowboated back to the shrine, picked up my loot, rowboated to a seapost to sell all the gems and breath, and rowboated to an outpost to sell the rest.
Once there was a captain who bought a galleon, he proudly named it the 'Breath of the Sea'. After a few voyages with his new vessel, a under water temple crossed his path. There he found, yess, the Breath of the Sea =P. That captain, is me xD. Well, i thought i had a ' special' name for me vessel...
Oh my god Cliff! I was one of those reapers going for the FoTD: what happened was we invaded into the FoTD, so we sunk our opponent and headed on over, we tried to take another sloop to the fort to help us. But they sailed away so we tried to make them vote up hourglass so we’d sink them and get a streak for it, but we got invaded and unfortunately, we sunk. I did notice a brig, didn’t think much of it. Great video Cliff!
What will cliff even do at this point? He's seen all there is to see, fought all their is to fight, practically became a founding member of the reapers. Hell, even maxed the grindiest group. Where to next, captain?
During my session today i actually found a coral message in a bottle and i recruited my friend to do the treasury and i got my first breath of the sea (it was a sapphire variant the least valuable but still cool) and somehow we did not get attacked
I always turn your stuff over again when i need to focus on something but not get too distracted to focus but sometimes its still hard going back to what i was originally doing because these vids are so good
Ah my god the Breathe of the Seas, they are whats preventing me from completing all the accommodation for the Sunken Kingdoms tab. When the shrines were added those bottles were like super rare to find but now I find them every few islands but they always end up being for the shrine on the other end of the map and i don't have the time to sail all the way to it. Luckily I know the puzzle for a the southern shrines, I get allot of Ancient Tributes doing the shrines, and I actually do the shrines solo.
I always solo treasuries. They are always near an island or rock to hide your ship. The one on top left corner of the map, I hide behind a rock just north west of it. The one at top right of the map, I hide my ship behind Old Faithful on the north end. For the one near reapers, I hide my ship on the west side of Plunder Valley. I shoot out of my ships cannon with a sword to make sure I can kill any sharks that come but that's not super common.
Anytime I get a coral bottle I always finish it. It's easy to get and worth a lot even without an emissary. The best is when you get 3 coral quests to the same shrine/treasury. Easily one of my favorites things to get as the shrines are really cool to me.
For those that don’t know, you have a higher chance of getting a coral message in a bottle in a shipwreck. I can’t believe I was sitting here yelling through my phone for him to check some wrecks
@@CliffTheStoryGuy WOW! You are very unlucky my friend. Usually I find them in shipwrecks all the time and say I’m going to do them, but never do them. 😂
Shrines are SUPER easy once you know them. I can do any of them in about 10 minutes. I actually grinded Merchant's to 50 with Shrine voyages instead of the typical ways. Probably how I'll end up grinding Hunter's Call, too.
I did quite allot of these Coral messages in a bottle to get the sunken sorrow shipset and i was attacked maybe 2 or 3 times. The sunken loot is 1 of my favorite loot in the game specially the bottles, but after farming it 30 times to get the final commendation, i do not want to see it for decent while. Love the videos and thank you for enlightening me for more uses of these bottles.
Fun fact: the only mermaid shrine/treasury i will ever be willing to go to is the Shrine that’s just below Shipwreck Bay. Just a couple Sirens and sharks and no puzzles.
It be really cool if they branch off the cooking and allow us to make potions. No combat buffs like hp or armor but utility stuff like water breathing would be kinda cool. Or maybe just let us choose to drink the breath of the sea instead of selling it and we get a water breathing buff for a period of time

I love you editing the other guy’s audio, like muffling it and stuff. A very small detail but just shows you putting a bit of effort into these videos.
Shrine of the Flooded Embrace: u can just dive down directly to the breath of the sea. Use mermaid statue close and teleport back up without doing a single piece of the puzzle ^^
Yeah, I feel like the majority of people, while they did do some fishing for their Hunter's grind, did sell various Gems to the Hunters for that Rep. I know I did. I am proudly at level 50 and just a few various fishy fish away from Legendary Hunter. It's mainly just rare fish; the night fish for Stormfish, Battlegills, & Wreckers; and the ever elusive Blackcloud Wreckers
I’m new to sea of thieves and ever since I played it I found this channel, I learn more every day and it’s just awesome to see your vids man, keep ‘em going there very entertaining 👍
I absolutely love all your videos, they are extremely entertaining! I will say it was kinda painful watching you guys actually do the puzzles in the shrines...you don't have to complete the puzzles to get the breath of the seas, I can't believe you'd choose to do a treasury to get one when the shrines, especially the flooded embrace shrine, is super easy to get the bottles. With the treasuries you have to complete the whole thing. Too much work unless you're working on pirate milestones :)
Actually to only get the breath of the sea from shrine you don't even have to complete most of the shrines in full. You just need to do a part of them and knowing what to do lets you speedrun it. It is harder to find the quest in the bottle rather than getting breath of the sea from shrine haha
The first shrine is the easiest one. I grind that one for gold all the time. Then go to fortress near and usually gets to level 5 GH in 20 mins. Of course if you've never done it before it is extremely hard but once you've done it it's almost easy to do in a matter of minutes.
I always make sure to collect those vials when I find 2 bottles leading to the same location. Got 2 Ruby at the same time once as well as a Ruby and an Emerald.
I love fishing in Sea of Thieves. Thanks again Cliff for inspiring my PvP avoidance strategy for my fishing sessions. Just wish it was easier to get pondies besides going to Devil's Ridge
4:30 I spent about 15 min trying to figure that out yesterday! and I couldn't get a straight answer ANYWHERE! I finally found out and I had your video here ready and waiting incase I wanted to watch it, I never did. and NOW! you just tell me for free without me even having to ask! FFS MAN! THIS IS MY GENERAL LUCK EVERY SINGLE DAY!
Personally I prefer the coral messages to be shrines rather than treasuries. Simply because if you know the puzzle you can easily do the shrine in record time while grabbing only the siren gems and breath of the sea. Except for that one shrine. You know the one. Then again I also played primarily solos and I don't have a consistent group of friends who played this game.
I 'grinded' Hunter's Call when Thieve's Haven Runs was the most efficient way to level Athena, since you got either Athena loot or Mermaid Gems from the main island.. But you'd be pretty desperate to do that nowadays..
The My Hero Academia music in this (Heard at least two songs from MHA) made me really miss MHA, and watching that with my girlfriend from November through to mid January... I wish I could go back and experience that again for the first time...
As someone with the Curse of Sunken Sorrow and currently working on the breath of the sea commendation, watching y'all stumble through the puzzles was very funny lmao
They should make the breath of the sea a potion which gives you unlimited breath for two minutes and maybe even "immunity" against sharks so you can swim underwater to a parked ship
When I saw you weren’t at level 49, I said “oh no”. That grind is NONSENSE by the time you reach 45. I had to spend an entire Saturday grinding up from 49 to 50
I remember I manage to finish all different qu’êta link to the siren shrine, so much that I ended up by knowing all of them by heart and the only reason why I would go back here is just for the reaper commendation to sell the ancient chest
Lowkey, I actually enjoy the shrines more than the treasuries. I just feel like most of the pve is pretty easy in the treasuries but beating the puzzles in the shrines makes me feel like a genius.
ok, two things: I didn't know gems could be sold at the Hunter's Call. I didn't know breaths of the sea could be sold at the Hunter's Call. Therefore, seems like I actually didn't need to sell hundreds of fish and basically kill half the ocean life to get to level 10.
Finally Cliff! I heard the news about you moving... (Congrats on moving btw) But it was soooooo long without content, i had to rewatch the whole channels content, just to still wait 2 weeks for a new video! And happy new year bc this is the first vid of 2023
This video continues to convince me that there's a buncha people reading these story's from a book in game not knowing he's probably sitting next to them in a barrel ready to steal there everything then sell it to the reapers, anyone else get that feeling watching his videos?
2:56 Soloing the sunken curse was risky but... honestly? Way easier than I thought. Took like two sessions to complete the whole thing Edit: Working on a brig without full players is no picnic. Just the other night I had one friend get disconnected and didn't rejoin (but we were waaay too deep in the session to restart with a fresh ship ) and the other friend playing around with discord music bots. Pretty much solod a brig for three hours but it was aiight. Still got everything done
@@CliffTheStoryGuy It felt amazing but at the end of the day, my heart will always be with solo slooping. That lonely intense feel of playing by yourself in this game is unmatched

I'd do it if I had 3 for the same tbh
@@CliffTheStoryGuy I've only had it happen once but even getting 2 for 1 is a big thing.
For those that don’t know, you have a higher chance of getting a coral message in a bottle in a shipwreck. I can’t believe I was sitting here yelling through my phone for him to check some wrecks
It's funny you say that because none of the shipwrecks we found in this session had one
@@CliffTheStoryGuy WOW! You are very unlucky my friend. Usually I find them in shipwrecks all the time and say I’m going to do them, but never do them. 😂
Me: * watches a video *
TH-cam: doesn’t that mean, RAID SHADOW LEGENDS?!
Love the videos and thank you for enlightening me for more uses of these bottles.
you can also get the coral message in a bottles from the captains stash captaincy quests!!! fastest way to get them IMO
oh forgot that its a new upload EVERY TUESDAY EVERY
how do you know when gold rush is happening?
My friend and I have been wanting to play during gold rush but
we never know when it it happening
Fun fact: the only mermaid shrine/treasury i will ever be willing to go to is the Shrine that’s just below Shipwreck Bay. Just a couple Sirens and sharks and no puzzles.
It be really cool if they branch off the cooking and allow us to make potions. No combat buffs like hp or armor but utility stuff like water breathing would be kinda cool. Or maybe just let us choose to drink the breath of the sea instead of selling it and we get a water breathing buff for a period of time
Didn't know what time it was, the lights were low
I leaned back on my radio
Some cat was layin' down some rock 'n' roll
"Lotta soul, " he said
Then the loud sound did seem to fade
Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase
That wasn't no DJ, that was hazy cosmic jive

But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky

'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie

Hey, that's far out, so you heard him too
Switch on the TV, we may pick him up on channel two

If we can sparkle, he may land tonight
Don't tell your papa or he'll get us locked up in fright

I love you editing the other guy’s audio, like muffling it and stuff. A very small detail but just shows you putting a bit of effort into these videos.
Shrine of the Flooded Embrace: u can just dive down directly to the breath of the sea. Use mermaid statue close and teleport back up without doing a single piece of the puzzle ^^
While Cliff was taking his hiatus, I completed multiple shrines, and thought they were the coolest content in the game...
I love these bottles of Merfolk booze. Also, shipwrecks can have coral messages in them. I found two coral message bottles in a shipwreck once.
The other day it told me i could only sell the mermaid gems to gold hoarders. Is this a change i missed?
i wish i had forgotten about these lava lamps, except i still need 17 for my ship set...
also, great to have you back lad.
You can get cosmetics from turning them in?
indeed, by selling enough sunken loot you end up unlocking the Sunken kingdom ship set
This is really what everyone trying a grind needs to do just something out of the ordinary to keep motivation up
By the way anybody know when gold rush hour is eastern standard time I can’t read any of the charts for some reason
when i farmed my 30 breaths they all went to Hunters, big 8k red bottles. find bottle, go do shrine, server hop. Got it done in a few days!
I just found this guy’s channel a few days ago and i’m just binging nearly all his episodes
Have stopped playing sea of thieves but your storytelling has kept me coming back!
I always make sure to collect those vials when I find 2 bottles leading to the same location. Got 2 Ruby at the same time once as well as a Ruby and an Emerald.
Also Im usually a solo so I'm on edge when down in the shrines 😂
I love fishing in Sea of Thieves. Thanks again Cliff for inspiring my PvP avoidance strategy for my fishing sessions. Just wish it was easier to get pondies besides going to Devil's Ridge
5:08 Cliff: "It's a shrine, bro! What is happening!" Proceeds to throw a tantrum.
I do love cliff's bemoaning of having to solve simple puzzles fit for children and how it reinforces my preconceptions of him.
A new cliff video
Me: the return of the king
As someone with the Curse of Sunken Sorrow and currently working on the breath of the sea commendation, watching y'all stumble through the puzzles was very funny lmao
Honestly like watching your child grow I’m so proud of you cliff
I finished this grind for 30 a few weeks ago.
We just started doing every coral message in a bottle we found.
Took a couple of weeks.
real grinding hours
Cliff, youre finnaly back! LES GO!
just ignore all the streams on twitch :)
Could you watch ashShinrays (sorry if I spelt it wrong ) about new update to the hunters call and tell us what you think?
0:00 "crusty me when i say", i love the pun
It’s been so long. We thought you might’ve sunk to the deep of the Sea. Good to have you back Cliff!
couldn't find a merm to spawn back up, took me a while to swim
Curious question for You!
Who among the great pirate legends is your favourites? Belle, Merrick, Pendragon, Larinna, Briggsy, DeMarco, or Lesedi?
great job on the audio editing! it sounded really cool!
Thank you 😭
@@CliffTheStoryGuy np!
As someone who has the curse of sunken sorrows, I can say that the shrines get real annoying real fast.
nah i think its still fun 👍
ok, two things:
I didn't know gems could be sold at the Hunter's Call.
I didn't know breaths of the sea could be sold at the Hunter's Call.
Therefore, seems like I actually didn't need to sell hundreds of fish and basically kill half the ocean life to get to level 10.
As someone who has the curse of sunken sorrow, all I have to do is see the inside of the shrine and I’ll know exactly what to do
Your accent is what makes these videos for me tbh, love watching them with my brothers. Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?
Cliff I just started watching you and your my favorite TH-camr
Finally Cliff! I heard the news about you moving... (Congrats on moving btw) But it was soooooo long without content, i had to rewatch the whole channels content, just to still wait 2 weeks for a new video! And happy new year bc this is the first vid of 2023
Thanks for sticking around even when I was gone, it's much appreciated!
This video continues to convince me that there's a buncha people reading these story's from a book in game not knowing he's probably sitting next to them in a barrel ready to steal there everything then sell it to the reapers, anyone else get that feeling watching his videos?
A constant threat
Fun fact, if you search shipwrecks you get tons of rare fish, mostly pre cooked. Fastest way to level hunter's call.
2:56 Soloing the sunken curse was risky but... honestly? Way easier than I thought. Took like two sessions to complete the whole thing
Edit: Working on a brig without full players is no picnic. Just the other night I had one friend get disconnected and didn't rejoin (but we were waaay too deep in the session to restart with a fresh ship
) and the other friend playing around with discord music bots. Pretty much solod a brig for three hours but it was aiight. Still got everything done
That's goated tbh
@@CliffTheStoryGuy It felt amazing but at the end of the day, my heart will always be with solo slooping. That lonely intense feel of playing by yourself in this game is unmatched
Me personally when I get a coral message in a bottle for the shrine of ancient tears I go do it i mean if a breath of the sea at my favorite shrine that I’ve memorized the puzzle for
