  • C’mon, look at this place! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out these structures are crazy old and will most likely have some incredibly old coins, relics, and other period pieces scattered around the grounds. The property owner was gracious enough to let us metal detect in search of whatever is there and we pulled out some amazing museum caliber pieces, a few that I’ve never even seen before! Let’s fire up the machines and roll up our sleeves because this place is gonna be magical!

Rich's buckle (not buckle) with the skeleton key hole shape could really be a buckle! It's possible that it had the larger area to slide a horse harness fitting in to, then it was meant to be slid back to the narrow slot part to keep it from pulling through? Wow everybody found fantastic things, I hope you're going back? Don't forget to keep up with the sunscreen guys! Hi Doug 🥰

The tombac button at the start is a great find. 🙂. Over here in England we find lots of them but they are hugely unimportant to 90% of the people who detect here. 😕. I absolutely love finding buttons only last weekend I found a complete full tombac button with a pattern on the front. 🙂. HH from across the pond. 😀.

Doug's buckle is a great find, dating to the house behind him! It's British issue cartridge box sling buckle, called an elongated Double D. Originally it would have had an iron tongue coming off the center bar. Too bad we can't post pictures. I have dug specimens and also use them on my reproduction equipment.

I've not been doing this hobby really very long but let's be honest, who doesn't want to keep a valuable find ? I definitely let the landowner know my expectations and requirements after I have his/her initial permission. If they don't like the stipulations I have put down, I let them know I can be flexible. But how flexible I will be depends on the potential I see in the search site in general. I want coins... every one that I find. If a landowner demands that I turn over whatever I find, it's adios. Why should I spend precious time looking for treasures I cannot keep ? But if the landowner would say, for example, that he wants one-third, or perhaps one half of the value of a monetary find if its worth $5000 or more, I can work with that. Discoveries of ancient artifacts other than precious metals, jewelry and coins I don't care so much about... the property owner can have them. Some might say my approach towards the landowner isn't very respectful towards him/her. But I absolutely do respect landowners. But if they think something could be found on their property of high value that they wouldn't let me keep anyway, then they can buy their own detector and look for it themselves. My approach in general, is to get the property owner to agree to let me keep any and all coins that I may find.

BTW, guys, i found a new way to quickly and clean old coppers and buttons without damaging them, i started to use a thing called a scratch pen, sometimes called a scratch brush, they usually come in sets of three, One is steel, one is fiberglass and the other which is the one i use is made with of brass i just let it air dry a few mins, then i use the brass pen and lightly pass it on the coin, it gets rid of the sand, and also the green stains, and leave the copper all nice.
