The dredge ship you see is the cutter suction dredge Hampton Roads. She has been working in the port for several years deepening the port for large container ships. They started a port expansion project in the late 2010s and are finished with the main project but keep finding parts they want to further deepen. When you have rival ports like Norfolk going to 56 feet so that the large ships don’t have to wait on tide and such, the port business is very competitive. With that said, the Port of Savanna has grown significantly and is now the 3rd busiest container port in the US. In addition to good port facilities, it had both good rail and road connections. Little wonder it has grown so much.
I watched the entire video. Fascinating. Staying in Savannah right now at a hotel with a partial view of the river. It’s nighttime. At the end of une video I heard the sound of a horn. It was a giant container ship going by! I’m going to try and figure out what times the next ships will come by and go out to the waterfront to watch. Thank you for this very informative, well-shot video.
I lived in Savannah for 10 years until the spring of 2021 - this was a cool way to see this. I use to fly my drone up and down the river as well. Got some great shots of the river at 400 feet🌴
As a truck driver; I appreciate you bringing in freight to many companies to keep our region supplied with freight and I hope you make many more trips enjoying the view.
As a consumer who enjoys such things as food, clothes, housewares, medicine, to name only a few, I very much appreciate your work as a truck driver, @rodneygrant7726! Thank you :)
Way back in the early 90's when the Raddison was just built,my ex-wife and I took the kids for a few days to Savannah. We had a 7th floor balcony room and I loved sitting out watching the river traffic and tug boats!
It was fascinating to watch such a large ship turn in such a tight space. everyone was calm , cool and collected . Congrats to you all for the entertaining video. Thanks!!
I live in Savannah, so this was VERY interesting to me!! I see these ships coming and going all of the time (I LOVE to sit on that beach on the river at Fort Pulaski and watch these beasts go by!!), but I never get to see them approach the dock! VERY cool!!!
Made it to the end. Great video. As everyone else has mentioned, always enjoy going to Savannah and just watching the ships come in. Nice change up to see it from the cargo ship perspective.
Wonderful video. I grew up near Savannah and my Dad worked at the Diamond Construction shipyard where some Moran tugs were built in the 1960's. It amazing to see what has changed and what remains after all these years. Thank you.
Have been to Savannah and the River Walk numerous times. Have been on a boat in the river and passed container ships in and out bound. This was a completely different perspective of visiting Savannah. Passing under the Talmadge Bridge was a squeaker, and then turning that monster around was interesting.Great video , thanks.
This is the first time I’ve seen the view from a container ship. That is a huge ship. I have a friend that worked at the port in Savannah. Great view. Thanks!
Made it to the end. This was an awesome video so I’ll take a look at your other posts as well. You and Chief Makoi do a good job educating us landlubbers on the inner workings of commercial shipping. Way to go.
Awesome... thank you for this. If you're ever back in Savannah, stop in my favorite River Street seafood restaurant - Fiddler's Crab House. They've got an upper-deck outdoor dining patio where you can watch these ships as they pass.
I live about 34 miles from Savannah in South Carolina. I've always enjoyed watching large ships. This is the first video I've seen of a large ship entering the Savannah River and getting to their mooring at the pier. I'm impressed. I hear that the Georgia Ports Authority is planning on raising the deck of the Hermatige Bridge to allow even larger ships to pass under it. I am interested to know how engineers plan on that.
I'd love to see a video on how a container gets loaded, what happens at intermediate ports, the order they're loaded, how it's sent to its final destination, etc.
I visited Savannah a few years ago, and my jaw dropped while sitting outside at one of the riverside restaurants and a container ship came downriver. The river didn’t appear wide enough for something so big. What an amazing site.
Cool video! My husband was a deckhand, then wheelman on Crescent tugs in Savannah. He retired in 2018. I’ve been able to ride the tugboat and see the work from that perspective, but never from the ship! My brother-in-law and father-in-law were both river pilots in Savannah.
Did they "spin" this ship around in the river before docking ? How long is this ship? Very cool. Especially since I'm right over the border in Florida and no idea these giants came in here!
After watching those giant container ships pass by our hotel room on a visit to Savannah three years ago, it was fascinating to finally see things from the other side. Thanks!
Made it to the end. What a difference the view is from the bridge deck. I love our beautiful city. This just added another great view. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your time in our hostess city the week before.
This so very interesting. I live 55 miles from Savannah and love watching ships come in and out. I took a trip down the river on the John W. Brown (a Liberty ship) back in 2002.
Great video, am a native of Savannah, now living in NC. Have been to the port a number of times, and up and down the river with Captain Sam, I believe was his name. My grandfather was a retired Merchant Marine Captain, and during my HS years volunteered with the local Preist to pick up sailors that played soccer against the Savannah team to get off the ship and have some recreational time. I got to go along and was invited to tour a few ships. Those were the days.
I'm a resident of Savannah and will be taking a boat tour of the harbor in June 2024. This was a fascinating forecast of what I will be seeing this month. I also followed the disaster of the Dali in the Baltimore harbor as I lived there for many years and actually used the Francis Scott Key bridge to get to work. From this video, I got a better understanding of what the Dali went through when it hit the bridge. Many thanks for the very informative video.
Just amazing. Stayed in Savannah last year right on the river. Watching these amazing ships as they slowly inched under the bridge was amazing. Especially watching them at night. What an amazing sight to see and such maneuvering skills. Can't wait to go back.

The Hampton Roads has only done maintenance dredging in the Savannah harbor.
As a local Savannah resident, it was great to see our wonderful city from a different perspective. Thank you for posting this video.
Ga resident, been on River Street many times but never saw it like this.
Same!

Thank you for this very informative, well-shot video.
install the marine traffic app on your phone its free and you can see all the ships in real time.
I lived in Savannah for 10 years until the spring of 2021 - this was a cool way to see this. I use to fly my drone up and down the river as well. Got some great shots of the river at 400 feet🌴

@melissab6060 You're welcome and it's a pleasure to keep America covered.
A truck driver invented modern shipping as we know it. Sea Land after WWII.
I know that river pilot! Mr. Patrick is doing a great job!
Way back in the early 90's when the Raddison was just built,my ex-wife and I took the kids for a few days to Savannah. We had a 7th floor balcony room and I loved sitting out watching the river traffic and tug boats!

Wow! The turning to the berth was wild!
I’m surprised a lot like that part of the video the most.
Made it to the end, informative slice of life video. Never seen river street from that angle.
Georgia boy here, it’s cool to see Savanna from the ship, I made it to the end, and let’s watch them unload the containers in a video
Pretty dang amazing, very cool view from the top deck.
Made it to the end. Great video. As everyone else has mentioned, always enjoy going to Savannah and just watching the ships come in. Nice change up to see it from the cargo ship perspective.

Dowtown Savannah is a unique place to watch ships because the river is very narrow there and theyre super close!
Very well done & interesting 👍👍👍👍🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
