    Clarification: Ships travel north/south between the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Twenty years ago my brother and I did a partial canal transit aboard a cruise ship. After anchoring in Gatun Lake, we disembarked to tour the older locks with operating "steam donkeys" instead of tugs and also swim in the lake too. It was an experience I'll never forget!

    Wonderful video. Look forward to complete time lapse of trip. We transited same direction west to east back in the 90's. We were on a Crystal Cruise trip, had come down west side of Mexico, and then transited across southern Caribbean with stops on many islands. Hired a car on Aruba and drove with friends around the entire perimeter of the island. Good times. The transit thru the canal was fascinating. A real marvel of engineering. I remember they had a viewing stand where public can sit and watch ships transiting at some point along the way, I think at the western end. Maybe we will see that in the unedited time lapse.

    Jeff, loved this! I grew up in Panama, and have 2 sisters who were born there (when there was the Canal Zone, Panama). Gatun Lake is about 85 feet above sea level, so that's why the locks were made to bring you up to the lake, and the back down to sea level. Not sure if you're aware, but Panama has been having a problem with some water shortages, and also deforestation problems. The government is trying to address these issues.

    Thank you for the video of the new Panama Canal. I went through the older canal back in 1969 while on the USS Galveston CLG-3, traveling from San Diego to the Med and back again. Since Lake Gatun is fresh water we did a test of our chemical and biological wash down systems. I’m surprised they don’t have the Mules that are on the old canal. One fond memory is the night before we traversed the canal. We had liberty in the Enlisted Mans Club, what a rip roaring time we had there. Now that is another story all together.
    Take care and stay healthy

      Jeff did a video early on about COVID 19 - interesting and informative. His video is actually why I started taking my temperature daily early on before it was required by my company in the U.S.

    Imagine working at the Panama Canal and every day, having huge ships come rolling through, nearly and sometimes scraping the side, while you just watch, waiting for the command to move your tugboat forward

    8:30 holy cow, I didn't realise how big your container ship was until I saw you looking down on that massive cruise liner as it went past! Great channel!

      @@JeffHK It's good the recharge the batteries from time to time. Some people (mistakenly) think you just sit around all day waiting for something to film, and PRESTO! out comes a video. But it's a LOT more work than that. I can relate. I made a living as a professional photographer for over a decade - and it was WORK! Fun? Oh yeah, there was fun. But there's a lot of hard work that goes into it - your brain gets tired! Been there, done that, got the t-shirt!
      So Jeff, do what you need to do to keep up the great content. We appreciate it! A lot!
      Fair Winds, following seas my friend.

    I did 6 transits in the mid 80's. Worked as a deckhand on a 150 foot adventure cruise boat...(ship?)
    We took passengers to the sunny islands on the Atlantic side and the jungles of the southern pacific side. Passengers would take the indigenous travel methods. Dugouts mostly.
    An incredible experience! I touched the canal walls each way!

    Thank you for always incredible vlogs. I crossed the canal once 40 years ago. It was Gatun Lake that made me feel "I'm in a tropical forest". Rain and low hanging clouds on the forest were so impressive that I clearly remember the scenes even now.

    i cant believe the Panama canal was bigger than that I learned. Its such a masterpiece to look at but a reminder that the canal took thousands of people to build, which many of them died.

    Can you do a video on which countries laws you have to abide by at sea? Eg: if your near the US, do you have to follow US law or?

    • @michaelm7945
      @michaelm7945 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maritime law is very confusing. Within 12 miles of said country all persons on board the vessel must abide by said countries law. When outside of territorial waters (12 miles) the crew must abide by whatever country their ship is registered in. WendoverProductions did a good vid on it.
