In 1970, Marcello Gandini designed this car and his employer, Bertone, proposed it to Lamborghini, who refused it and developped another bodyshape for the soon coming Urraco. At that point, Bertone proposed it to Ferrari who took the deal and 3 years later (1973) was presented the Dino 308 GT4 (and reduced engine capacity 208 GT4). Hi Colleen. My first Ferrari was a 308GT4 that I purchased from -- your father -- in 1983. At least 15 years later, I was at a car show in Scottsdale, Arizona, and was told he was there as a sponsor. I forgot what he looked like, but someone pointed him out. As I walked toward him, from at least 30 feet away, he looked at me and said " Hi Steve." Really. At some point, I traded up to a Testarossa, which is a work of art that belongs in a living room. But as you pointed out, speed isn't everything. The GT4 was simply much more fun to drive. A great era for Ferrari, especially when you mention the 365/512BB, the 400's (the manual is an amazing drive) and the GTB/S. All classics now, simply because they are great to drive and you can run them on a budget and not a dealership maintenance schedule required...

That car is in fantastic condition and I think the Boxer two-tone color scheme really suits it. Shame about the Fed bumpers though; the original Euro design is so much better integrated and, as you say, lighter. It's also nice that it's still on 14" wheels and 205/70s. The 16s many have swapped to make it easier to find modern tyres but although your wheels aren't actually OEM (they would have 'Campagnola', 'Ferrari' and the size cast in raised lettering around the rim) they look just right on the car. I drove 50,000 miles in one of these in the '90s and absolutely loved it, especially on fast open roads or racetracks where you could keep the momentum up and not worry about the heavy steering at low speed. It was certainly better balanced around corners than the 308GTB. Thank you for a nice review that brought back some good memories. Oh and by the way, your front driver's side sidelight is out.

Another nice video. The big 4 seater V12 Ferrari GT in production at the time of the introduction of the Dino 308 GT4 2+2 was the 365 GT4 2+2, not the 400 which replaced the 365 GT4 2+2 in 1976.
I'm surprised she found a street that empty so she could wring it out to move that fast just to get those sounds. But who could fit in the back with no legroom? Then again Lamborghini came out at the same time with the Urraco which was a lousy equivalent to the GT4. Glad Ferrari came out with the proper 308GTB in '76 and continued into the 80's. That was a sexy car and really looked and performed like a Ferrari, especially in RED!
This popped up in my feed and I clicked without seeing who posted it. Thanks for this; it's definitely an under appreciated car. I like the looks a little more than the 308 GTB, plus it's that small bit more practical with the extra room. It wouldn't seem to be a sin against originality to swap in European bumpers.
I had the privilege of owning a 79 gt4. Anyone who says it is not a real Ferrari needs to drive one. Ergonomically perfect for the driver with a v8 to die for. Handling and brakes to match. Only mod was a sports exhaust. I once asked a Ferrari buff his opinion.....answer...on the twisty bits nothing to touch it. Sure looks are an acquired taste but it's all about the driving experience. Bit like the Nsx...pure badge snobbery...one of the best period supercars ever built.
@Smitty world.. yeah Gandini but he didn’t finish the car.. the 308 Pininfarina is just the European version of the Montecarlo with a V8 in the back. And Brembo brakes instead of mine 911 carbo ceramics (but I changed the Lancia’s ) . Engine in mine is a Ingeneri Busso V6 255hp. Champagne colore and black leather seats (certainly not the American Scorpio)! I wanted the 308 Bertone but this stupid pussy bought a Maserati Quattroporte from the eighties instead! Both cars were around 14000€ but I had to get them in Modena where they were both restored in ‘17! 2020 now and the Ferrari goes 80k American dollars! Don’t buy them in their American version!!! @@alexardies3171 there is some commonality between the 308gt4 and the Lancia Montecarlo: the Fiat Group door handles. For the GTB and GTS there may be the odd electrical bits but the chassis, suspension, interior and engine are not in any way related.
@ Tim Gosling .. the suspension was upgraded by Koni for the 308 quatrovalvole coz Ferrari wanted to race with them! And they did in the eighties but never officially in group B coz they made the 288GTO ordered by Enzo himself! Sadly people were killed in 86? With that insane Integrale and S4 drove only for a very brief moment they told me! I was born end 90! So? Yeah the Ferrari had a 4cm longer wheelbase but what is 4cm? 15inch wheels instead of the Monte’s 13.. 205-215 tyres (depends on which country) and the nose was lower for their lights! Interior? Yeah of course a different transmission tunnel! Same jaeger clocks but with a 300km/h speedometer. And prancing horses under the counter.. red lightning coz Ferrari. Same leather seats although very rare in the Monte! Ferrari had air-scoops ! The Ferrari is kinda beautiful but the Bertone was really much better on a closed circuit! I drove both my Monte and my garagista’s Ferrari 308 in anger at Spa and I always won with the Lancia on “illegal 195 tyres”! Under-plate is the same! Same length, same height, same width but both had a double outlet (Abarth one) which is not original. Shame that the engines were transverse just like in the Urraco which I personal like.. love coz it’s maybe a lesser Lamborghini but I find her incredible sexy although the engine is way more expensive than the others but keep in mind that the Ferrari always will be a very good investment and certainly in this times.. it will only go up in price! That’s why I said that I’m a stupid 🤦♀️buying that Maserati but I don’t need a sport car! I can drive the Alfieri proto and the new MC20 whenever I ask it politely to the big boss. ( I mean only on circuits like Fiorano and Mugello and maybe Arese if I ask coz Maserati made the 8c and 4C for Alfa) and that’s also the reason that I got this Busso V6 in my Monte!
How about a video on the FIAT Dino that is acting like a wallflower in this video? Speaking of Bertone and Lamborghini the basic design for the 308GT4 was originally one of two that Bertone had submitted to Lamborghini for the Urraco. (Although the prototype's pop up headlamp treatment was a bit "different" it was revised as the design was ironed out for Ferrari and looks much better in its final form.) As an X 1/9 owner it's fun to see all the bits that are also used on higher end cars. The door handles are on both the Urraco and the GT4, the trunk and engine release handles can also be found on the Countach. (It also makes me wonder if prices are marked up for said parts depending on what you are buying it for!)
a lot of them came with no radio, whom did the resto on that car I happen to have my fathers and it has not been started since 1985 sitting in a garage with a few others all low miles
I had a Ferrari DIno 246gt which was also not a Ferrari - and the irony of it is that everyone who saw it said it was the best looking Ferrari they had ever seen - even Ferrari Owners Club UK - it even one a prize!!!! - When I did try to correct them - I failed - they simply wouldn't have it. After all, they said, "it was designed by Dino (Alfred) Ferrari - and it was he who suggested mounting the 2.0 litre engine which Ferrari built (not Fiat as is often said) and the car was built in their factory" sooooo.....technically it was a Ferrari....even though it wasn't. Early customers complained about 'plastic chairs and underpower) so like mine they fitted leather and a 2.4 V6 - which also went on to be in the Lancia Stratos including the rally cars. Sadly Alfredo never got to see the finished article having died before it was released.
The 206/246 was not designed by Dino Ferrari. He died 10 years before it was conceived. Alfredino had some minor input into the V6 racing engine of the 1950s which Enzo then named 'Dino' in his memory. Alfredino's only connection with the road cars is the similar configuration of the engine and thus the adopted name. Surprised anyone at FOC UK would tell you otherwise, even though we love 206 and 246 Dinos as an integral part of the Ferrari history, built as they all were at the Maranello factory.
@@timgosling6189 Oh yes - I was instilling a bit of hyperbole in my comment - to address whether the DIno's were real Ferraris or not - but you are right on with Alfredo Though his exact level of involvement is disputed, Dino is said to have had a hand in several key Ferrari designs, notable the 750 Monza and several small-capacity racing V6s. At the tragically young age of 24, Dino fell victim to what is now known as Muscular Dystrophy, passing away in June of 1956. Enzo was devastated, as was his wife Laura, with whom he never quite reconciled afterwards. The Dino series of racing cars, as well as the 206/246 and their successors were named in honor of him.
The original 2.0 litre alu block engine in the 206 was Ferrari built. The 246 2.4L iron block, alu head engines though designed by Ferrari were Fiat built. The 2.4L Dino engines had Dino on the cam covers. The alu block V8 engines in the 308GT4, built by Ferrari, have Ferrari on the cam covers. The 246 was never designed by Dino - he was long since dead. Dino had an interest in the V6 engines, though his input is probably overplayed. So all Ferraris, mainly race cars with V6 engines were named Dino in his memory.

You can see the shadow of the Lancia Stratos in the styling. I find the black paint an unnecessary distraction from an otherwise good design. But it was popular back then, like shoulder pads, big hair, mullets, gold chains and slant nose Porsches. All of which are now cliche in the best way possible.
Ferrari should revive the Dino and price it around $70k. I know they considered it in the past but the upcoming deep recession could be a great time to do it. Keep the lines simple as close to the original as possible - none of the aggressive flares and such. I am sure it will be a big hit!
cars with mostly straight line designs - so cool , they don't make them like that anymore. today's cars , specially headlights - luk so fucked up, like they took drugs or something , cause lights have so many weird curves & lines going everywhere - very disgusting look. awesome car, thanks for sharing.
yes, it was a Dino as a special evolved model as an homage to Enzo´s early dead son because of a ilness and Dino´s are especial cars and opened the way to modern ferraris , as designed by his son in early 60´s being a new type of car(midle engine),when all ferraris were front long engines, i wanted a Daytona never could buy one, but the 400i was hated by everyone allowing me to have a perfect condition car of this and powerfull and 4 seat car ferrari, i don´t get it first hated then after decades recognised as they were in reality

people don't say this is not a dino, they say this is not a ferrari.
Absolutely enjoyed your video! If I had ever seen one of these I didn't know what I was looking at. Now I do, thanks!
Awesome! Thanks!
Hello from Ireland ☘️Great Video, always interesting and love seeing and learning more about the cars 😊
Hi, thanks for watching, glad you enjoy the videos :)
Ferraris Online I saw a black Audi R8 the other day
This popped up in my feed and I clicked without seeing who posted it. For a split second I was like 'who is this lady?' expecting fluff, then I saw her name and it took less time than F1 to shift to go "oh, Colleen (and Michael)!" and know that I was in for a very informed video, though I never have visited your channel before (just your website)
Glad you found us! Hope you enjoy the videos.
@@FerrarisOnline Indeed I am. And all the great articles on the website as well. Keeping my eye out for a sunroof+rear seat delete 308 GT4 as my next fun driver. This one isn't it but looks well priced for the condition and service - may it find a great home.
Excellent video of a great car highly understated, the presenters personality and caristma makes you appreciate it more.
Only thing I would add those back seats are only for small kids .. But your right .. talk about the Poor mans Ferrari .. they were a great investment .. I miss the standard 308 tail lights ... Great video !
COLLEEN it is so true thst the most fun cars are not waysvthe fastest and most powerful. Very well ststed, nice yo see peoplebthst love cars the same way I love cars. Thank you.
We were doing donuts with my 13HP isetta earlier 😆 such a blast. Its true they dont have to be super fast to be fun
I had a 75 Euro. Fun little car!👍
Great content guys !
Thanks!
Thanks for this; it's definitely an under appreciated car. I like the looks a little more than the 308 GTB, plus it's that small bit more practical with the extra room.
It wouldn't seem to be a sin against originality to swap in European bumpers.
Cant ever agree with the 308 GT4 being better looking. The GTB is one of the best looking cars ever.
Excellent. Superb presentation, thank you 👏
Great review, many thanks.
Just subscribed to your channel couple weeks ago and love it.
Thanks glad you like it.
Can see a little Lancia in the design. Gandini work on this design? Cool car
Gandini designed this and the Urraco at much the same time. He offered both designs to both companies.
Never! And Fuck De Muro and Shmee! Wait wait not Shmee coz he must be underage and you surely won’t be a pedo I guess? Greetings friend petrolhead 🧏🏼♀️🏎🏎🏎 ps: fuck my English too. Pps: fuck modern 2020F1!
Alex Ardies thanks :)
I had a 75 for about a year. wish I had kept it.
6:48 OMG! At first I thought this was another kind of 308..... in the trunk.
Look forward to driving mine more once finished after this video, and not too much in the way of “oh it’s not a real Ferrari “ for once👍
Love the GT4 but how much for the restoration? That truly was done for love of the car.
Watch the video past 8:16 - it was USD $150k. Probably = pretty much the sale price.
a lot of them came with no radio, whom did the resto on that car I happen to have my fathers and it has not been started since 1985 sitting in a garage with a few others all low miles
Dougan enterprises in oceanside, california did the restoration. Highly recommended. We use chris for most of our cars. Tell him we sent you. 😀
Bertone initially gave the design to Lamborghini for the Urraco it was not received well and Ferrari took it for the GT4.
Well done! There was a time here in Cali (80s) that you could by one of these for less than $10k.
How does it feel to be the luckiest woman in the universe.....all those Ferraris......?:)
I absolutly love the older dinos they are pieces of art
@@francisdmn I bough to the voices of better knowledge here - thank you all - but no matter what he and his father were directly responsible for some incredible and iconic machinery.
The engine sounds like it’s missing on the ignition. Not all cylinders sound like they are firing.
Richard Hammond Loves It
There are two two-tone models in this review and both are gorgeous!
much better presentation on this Ferrari - photography/lead in/ scrolling text disappearing hitting the overpass!
Ms Sheehan better outfitted as well - classy overrules grunge always!
Always my favorite
The GT 4 is a far better car than the 308gtb and 328gts/b
( I have owned all three). The handling and setup
is far superior..The car was setup by Niki Lauda.
I drove all three around the Nordschleife the gt4
was by far the best, and more fun. The 308GT 4
Was and is an out and out Ferrari. Just because it
was not designed by Pininferina means nothing.
Just to add many GT4 have been and are still being raced.
The only tool kit I have seen in a Ferrari had two glasses and a bottle of red in it.
Looks interesting in 2 tone. Makes it look lower perhaps. Lovely profile. Really nice looking Ferrari. I think so anyway.
That two-tone is killer
Yeah, I did enjoy the video! Thanks a lot!
Was it painted black below the waist to hide the rust?
No. Many cars a "two-tone" paint.
Lovely looking car. Great video. To my untrained ear it doesn't sound like its running quite right.
Its just fine. Mics must've picked it up wierd.
A really good video. So much better than the 14 year old boy called "Shmee" !!
@carforumwanker Daddy’s boy Shmee (what means a very narrow slit in a certain language.. No Joke!!) must be one of the most annoying internet car critics (after world champion Dough of course)! Makes you wanna love Lance Stroll (after all it’s not his fault that his father Lawrence is a billionaire) and he got his podium in the pink Mercedes! He drives in the top six! The 308GT4 Bertone? Good even very good in European trim and easy in “understanding “the engine easy in entretien (sorry don’t know the English word) entreating? If I’m wrong sorry! Way more powerful in Ferrari trim and with no Dino badging after ‘75. I mean better road handling than his Pininfarina sister and faster too! 273hp in Belgium! 33k€ four years ago in race-trim 85k$ in 2020 in his normal version with four genuine seats for adults (no Italian 2+2). Could buy mine for 33000€ in ‘17 with a roll cage safety cage carbon brakes and with all the sky fake white leather removed but no this idiot 🤦♀️wanted a Maserati Quattroporte from the eighties! Dutch car but was fully restored in Modena. Good car.. far more better than it used to be but... not a cavalino rampante! So.. fuck De Muro, Shmee o wait don’t coz he’s underage and you don’t want to be a phaedofile I guess, so fuck in general! And yeah I like that girl presentator. Is she always driving cars like this? coz I don’t know! Anyway greetings friend petrolhead 🏎🏎🏎🤘🏻ps: fuck my English too! Pps: I meant her Pininfarina sister!
@Ricky The one with a face like a peperoni pizza ?
She should be sponsored by "Dr Pimple"
Ciao ho guidato tanti di questi modelli il 208 era a debito di cv dato il suo peso matu dimmi come fai a guidarla con la frizione durissima?👋👋
We never had an issue. The clutch is just fine. A fun car to drive.
Great job!
The Boxer paint is not correct for factory spec and the marker lights are euro spec.
Great Video .. Nice to see you have pants without holes .. Keep Up the Good work !
This is a Mondial at ~3X the price, for no real reason.
The real reason is obvious.
Christ, a garage HIFI that matches the cars in it ! Wants a vid on its own ...
Finally someone noticed it. 😆
Bel servizio, però la lampadina di posizione spenta non va bene...
I love your videos, and I want your job!
You can see the shadow of the Lancia Stratos in the styling. I find the black paint an unnecessary distraction from an otherwise good design. But it was popular back then, like shoulder pads, big hair, mullets, gold chains and slant nose Porsches. All of which are now cliche in the best way possible.
All the 308s are classics
Just beautiful, the car is not bad either.
I'm from Italy....top cars...
I have to admit. I wanted to see what you had to say in this review, but also that you remind me of a naughty school teacher! Please do more reviews.
So many refer to the Dino as a Ferrari, which it isn't and never was.
Ferrari should revive the Dino and price it around $70k.
I know they considered it in the past but the upcoming deep recession could be a great time to do it.
Keep the lines simple as close to the original as possible - none of the aggressive flares and such.
I am sure it will be a big hit!
It is called the Alfa Romeo 4C
@@kevinharper7037 And that's the problem - it's called "Alfa Romeo" instead of "Ferrari".
Hmm the name Fiero comes to mind 😮
Shoulda had prancing dinosaurs to satisfy everyone.
Tem um dessa aqui no Brasil Abandonada da mesma cor
Abandoned by what company? Not us.
Great episode I love the cheaper Ferraris
cars with mostly straight line designs - so cool , they don't make them like that anymore. today's cars , specially headlights - luk so fucked up, like they took drugs or something , cause lights have so many weird curves & lines going everywhere - very disgusting look. awesome car, thanks for sharing.
You are gorgeous , like you had been designed by Pininfarina ❤️
Bertone
@@frankdenardo8684 She's definitely Pininfarina.
Pininfarina styling overrated - should have done more with Bertone in my view...
questo non e dino il dino originale monta un v-6 disegnato dal figlio di enzo ferrari che si chiamava dino e per questo la machina porta il nome dino
An object lesson in how to make an interesting subject boring.
I don't think so
I bet she’s fun to play with.
I would have never watched this if it wasnt for her.
Restoration of 150K???? For a car worth between 50-80k. that can be beat by a new Honda Accord.
Car is not running on all eight cylinders
It just needed the old italian tune up, runs great now. :)
yes, it was a Dino as a special evolved model as an homage to Enzo´s early dead son because of a ilness and Dino´s are especial cars and opened the way to modern ferraris , as designed by his son in early 60´s being a new type of car(midle engine),when all ferraris were front long engines, i wanted a Daytona never could buy one, but the 400i was hated by everyone allowing me to have a perfect condition car of this and powerfull and 4 seat car ferrari, i don´t get it first hated then after decades recognised as they were in reality
Bertone, Berton"e" "E" as in Edgar
You left out the fact that this car was originally designed to be a Lamborghini.
I see it now , looks like the first Aventador
I new a guy who had a V6 dino...
I prefer the car you are talking about...
We didn't go to unleaded fuel in Australia until 1985...
Unforntunately they are a rich mans toy and the price of restoration you described is an example...
Why wont this woman go away...
I don't like ferrari much....
that cars sounds like my tractor,
You must have one really badass tractor.
@@FerrarisOnline it surely has a non-standard exhaust. Mine sounded nothing like that.
It has everything that I want in a Ferrari, except for a smart beautiful woman in the passenger seat. 😀
She's my dream woman!
Smoking hot thumbnail...classy...
God so nice....
I’m sorry, but those white pants are absolutely shocking. You got good hips - get a pair that fits properly. Maybe then I can concentrate on the car! 😉
Its a 'Name' & Dino is better. Its Bertone styled & not pinninfarina, a lot of people didn't like that. Take the Ferrari badges off & have Dino badges put back. It is a Ferrari called a DINO & that will do for me. People who put Ferrari badges on a 246 really boil my piss!. Like putting Toyota badges on a Ford!
More like putting Lexus badge on a Toyota. Oh they already DO that?
