Two quick tips for holding something like a connector in place for soldering. The first is get yourself some resuable tacky mounting clay, available at craft and hardware stores and online. Holds very firm while allowing you to reposition, comes off clean when you're finished. If you don't have that on hand use masking tape. Same thing.

If you use flux, you won't get solder bridges because the solder will be attracted to the pins and pads and not in between.

good video: it shows all the problems a inexperienced person will find when soldering smds. what I do not understand, though is why you are soldering the back side of the connector ( where the pins are) from the front: you not only barely see the pins bat the connector is in the way and you may touch it ( hence burning) it. You usually put yourself were you have direct vision of what you are soldering , with nothing in the way

Dude...I'm trying to adapt my laptop's motherboard to a desktop case and messed the keyboard connector because I used a large soldering iron (well it seems you are using one with the same size I tried to use, which means I'm the one who is terrible at that! I shake much more than you...at least, you gave me hope that it is possible to do a nice job even having hand shaking a little😂👍).
I bought a soldering iron with thinner (needle) pointers(? I don't know how it's called, I'm Brazilian).
Thanks for the video. Opened my horizon and gave me hope that someday I can fix the keyboard connector if I wish to turn my desktop-laptop's motherboard into a laptop again.

I have a Dell Inspiron 7706 2n1 laptop, the "keyboard FPC/FFC connector (30 pins) on the "mother board" was damage. Although a difficult job, I have managed to dissembling/reassembling parts in a few dell PCs, but to try to solder an FPC/FFC connector is something else! So, as you rightly suggesting I will not even think about, let alone try to replace the connector myself. So, if you can save me some money by not having to buy a motherboard, I would deeply appreciate it. By the way, as shown in your video, in my Dell 7706 the black side of the keyboard ribbon goes in facing down. I think the connecter in my laptop is called "Clamshell" (Flip Lock) Connection, not Top or Bottom Contact. I don't know if the pitch is 0.3, 0.5 or 1.0mm? When I find out which is the right one to buy, I will order the replacement via Ebay. Please get back to me ASAP regarding the terms and arrangements. I have a PayPal account and I am located in NYC, NY. If you no longer do this kind of work, maybe you or someone seeing this comment can direct me to someone who does. Thank You Kindly

Man flux will be your best friend if you put a little smear on the pins… the hold the connector in place with finger or tweezers gently.. small dab of solder on the iron.. and just tack both ends.. instantly done, perfect job, then just go pin by pin and a small amount of solder and let the flux do the work.

Hi, The one that I want to get fixed is a 0.5mm Pitch 40-pin Hirose connector for the hard drive socket. The locking clip is gone, the base is still there. I bought the right type of connector from Mouser ($2.83). The 0.5mm pitch size is so small for point by point soldering. Also to take the broken connector out will be a pain even with a hot air gun because there are so many little components surrounding it. Do you use a stereo microscope for this work?

Having done a bit of soldering IC etc a few tips I would suggest for the last part.
Have a flux pen to draw along the contacts lots of flux really helps and quality circuit board solder.
Check out videos of Drag Soldering.
With the connector off draw a line with the flux pen across the contacts.
Then put some solder on the iron and drag the iron across the contacts in a sweeping motion.
Then use the flux pen again on the contacts.
Place the connector and hold it in place with some tape or tac.
Drag the soldering iron across the contacts
If the solder bridges some of the contacts put more flux on and run the solder along the contacts again till the contacts all look clean.

I somehow plugged the cable incorrectly and it smoked and sparked. 1-2 pins on the connector are damaged, which isn't the real issue. The actual port seems unusable.
