    My neighbor asked for my help. I had an old SSD drive and decided to install it in her laptop. Somehow I pulled the latch for the keyboard ribbon cable out. After 2 hours of fighting with it I looked up solutions on youtube. This video saved me. thanks!

    Thank you for mentioning that some clips attach differently. hearing that, I got out my botany hand glass and looked at my clip, and saw that unlike the ones you illustrated, mine is actually attached at each contact pointnot out at the edges.
    The metal of each contact forms a tight C shape, as viewed from the side, with the clip swinging like a gate in the top part of the four Cs and the flat ribbon inserting below the gate with the lower part of the C shape making contact with the underside of the ribbon. So all I had to do was reinsert my gate into the C's that I had pulled it out of before I understood that there was a latching mechanism here. It wasn't trivial because I had to get the angle right and I had to bring just the right amount of force to bear on a tiny little thing.

    Alternate fix: The ribbon that gets clipped in has two sides, one with exposed connections and one covered in plastic. Cut a piece of electrical tape and stick it to the end of plastic side. This will give it just enough thickness to make the connection and hold it in place. If you're worried about it working loose you can either tape it down or put a bit of hot glue on it (the glue is not conductive, and easy to peel off)

    • @danvos6542
      @danvos6542 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The electrical tape suggestion worked for my situation where the black piece was fine but the white base was cracked. The connection was not tight but after adding the electrical tape on the ribbon cable and then giving it a solid push into the connector, the connection was tight enough to work again. Thanks for the tip!

    Great video! One advise, i struggled too with positioning the clip @4:35
    So i placed a (credit)card against the holder of the clip in front of it, then it has the right height for the clip to position it. That way it was very easy to clip it in. Hope it helps some.

Bought a Nintendo switch motherboard and the display connector had a pin out of alignment (fixed that) but the ribbon cable is damaged and the connector doesn’t have a clip, so I’ve bought new connectors to salvage the clips from them and this is what I’ll be watching whilst doing that! I used this video and got my keyboard ribbon cable back in place. Thanks PCM! However, not all the keys work unless I put pressure on top of the clip. I tried a tip from PenguinSavage here and put a piece of electrical tape on but then the clip won't stay closed. I tried taping it down. I folded up layers of tape (to make a lump) and taped *that* down hoping that when the keyboard was in place it would put the necessary pressure on. No go. Any ideas? It's an old laptop that I'm fixing up to have as backup, so I'm not worried about trying things.

    Hi,
    I watched this video. But it wasn't helpful because, in my situation, and I think for most, it isn't the clip itself it breaks or it doesn't break alone. Rather, the piece holding the clip which is on the motherboard breaks. Just as you pointed out that the clip is fragile, so are the sides and if the clip breaks out of the sides, usually one or both of the sides do also. The question is, how can you replace that? How can you replace that rectangular frame that the clip holds onto?

    • @PC_Monkey
      @PC_Monkey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This video shows how to replace a clip as its the only thing most people can do with limited skills. If the port breaks, then like most motherboard ports, its not easily fixable. It would need to be removed from the board and replaced or the board itself would need to be replaced.
