Free Climbing Moonlight Buttress

  • In the big wall free climbing world, the aesthetic sandstone crack system on Moonlight Buttress stands as an iconic line on nearly every climber's life list. But for Eddie Bauer athlete Katie Lambert, one milestone on that multi-pitch testpiece elevated its significance to something greater and much more personal than just a single potential tick on the resume.

    I've seen posts saying this is not free climbing. Free climbing does use ropes incase of a fall, but doesn't help the climb. Free solo would be climbing without a rope no gear no nothing except a chalk bag and climbing shoes

    Great video and incredible performance by the climbers here, but all I can think about when looking at Moonlight Buttress - Alex Honnold's first great Free solo ascent, April 1st 2008, Unrepeated, and most probably will never be repeated again ever. Honnold is wired differently then pretty much everyone else, literally.

      As a climber for more than 15 years, Honnold makes headlines, but is nowhere near the gold standard of the sport. Are his feats entertaining? Absolutely. Do they represent the pinnacle of the sport? No.

    • @ivandesantis858
      @ivandesantis858 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@vashusan1984 Oh really. Next time somebody free solo's Moonlight buttress ,Half Dome or El Cap let us all know because The NY Times, 60 Minutes and about 10 thousand other publications in media thought his feats were beyond just entertaining. Other climbers have cited his assents as nothing short of historic.

    • @vashusan1984
      @vashusan1984 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ivandesantis858 His feats are incredible, but just because you make a name for yourself taking on mildly challenging routes (grades easily ascended by most professional climbers) without safety equipment, doesn't make you the gold standard. It's hilarious listening to mainstream media report on climbing, it's all for shock value. They don't talk about the climbers pushing grades in bouldering, sport climbing or mountaineering. Where's the advert money coming in for those stories? People outside of the climbing world worship Honnold as if he is a God, while many pro climbers pushing the envelope of climbing get ignored because they practice intelligent safety.
      It is blatant hyperbole to call Honnold the 'gold' standard of climbing when when there are so many other professionals pushing the boundaries of the sport without the media coverage.
      Again Honnoldvs feats are incredible, he's certainly wired differently than most of us. I just can't agree with calling him the gold standard when I know of so many other professionals working to progress the sport.

      @@vashusan1984 I'll defer to your knowledge and history of climbing but just in a basic judgement of things if I do something that no one else has i.e free solo the 3 rocks previously mentioned (plus several I haven't) I'm going to get the fanfare especially since nobody else has. If say some 100 meter sprinter for example should run the 100 meters in under 9 seconds his form etc might not be textbook but his results will be unmatched and therefore he would be deserving of the attention and accolades. Those rocks are not going anywhere. Every climber can wake up one day and try and match his free solo assents but until they do Honnold will continue to be a God and that feels fair to me.

    People shilling Honnold on every climbing video are the type of people who knew nothing about it before watching free solo, never climbed anything, and probably wouldn't be able to climb a simple rock if they ever tried. Typical lowest common denominator.
    While Honnold's achievements are unique and one of a kind, it doesn't make him the best at climbing. He is always the first to say that. A simple look at competitive climbing and you quickly find hundreds of them who are far better. Honnold is the most daring climber and that's pretty much it when it comes to his climbing hallmarks. Every other aspect is far bellow the top tier.
    I love him mostly because of his character. If he was dull, most people would say "just another idiot trying to die". But he's intelligent and really just a good guy, coupled with what he does and you get a perfect combo. The point is, don't be a gumby.

The "Free" just indicates you climbed it free of aid from devices and used your own body strength. This route is usually aided because it is very hard, hence why it is cool that they free climbed it. There is no prerequisite that you must die if you fall on a free climb route!
      I'm guessing you misunderstood the meaning for a moment there - they did free climb the route but it wasn't done free solo (without any protection) They climbed the route in what is commonly accepted to be a clean ascent (no bolts or aid to assist climbing the route) Although there are routes that were classically climbed with aid in the past and many still are - these route are now being climbed free style which are considered more ethical and help to preserve the route condition, also by climbing in this style it can significantly increase the difficulty and risk thereby pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved on the same route.
      Climbing without any protection is only for the most skilled and confident of climbers and is by no means a commonly accepted way of ascending a route especially of this calibre.

      Many have died being roped up, it is not ever to be taken lightly. There is Aid climbing, free climbing, free solo, and bouldering. Aid you rely on equipment to move you up, free climbing you move on your own with equipment for "some" protection, free solo no equipment other than sometimes shoes and chalk bag, bouldering basically free solo sometimes not as high, more powerful short moves also not much equipment other than maybe a crash pad, shoes and chalk.

      kjnoon phish No, free climbing is going upward without anything above you, relying on mount points below for safety. Regular climbing involves a set anchor point on top.

    That'snot free climbing. Alex Honnald solo climbed that. No ropes, no partners.

      No ropes is free solo :)

      It is free climbing. Free climbing does include ropes but only if you fall. The ropes don't help with the actual climbing

    • @dosdrummer
      @dosdrummer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Free soloing is using no ropes. Free climbing uses ropes incase of a fall. Free climb does not mean climbing without ropes. Look it up you don't have to take my word for it

      Aid Climbing= pulling or hanging on gear to ascend a route
      Free Climbing= Only using gear for protection in case of a fall
      Free soloing= climbing without a rope
      Sport climbing= climbing bolted routes.
      Trad climbing= placing removable gear, nuts, cams, etc while you climb (cracks)
      There are many other types of climbing but these basic definitions will help

    How is this "free climbing"? - They are using ropes and draws!

      You are thinking of free soloing, free climbing is climbing without using ropes or devices to pull you up the rock (as opposed to aid climbing) but you DO use a rope and protection for safety in case you were to fall.

      For protection, not direct aid. It may be time for you to re-read CLIMB!
