Incredibly lucky that didn't occur on the journey home - timely maintenance. I think the diagnosis on the drum shoe is spot on - though as I am months behind, you already know this or not... 😂 Great content as always, Marc. The old bus is still a beast. Good to see Matt back on the channel, you've a great friend/channel dynamic.
Thanks Darren yes we were very lucky with this one. Glad your enjoying the content. Don’t worry things are slowing up so should give you time to catch up 👍
I restored a T2 and yeah, the “easy-to-fix” engine was made as such for a reason. I love the look, it’s a hoot to drive, buuut… I’m done with air-cooled, carburated engines. Thankfully doing a FI AP engine swap is fairly easy. I’m doing that for my current 1975 Puma GTE project.
@@SimpsonsClassics thank you! Hope you get yours sorted and can enjoy the smiles from people as you drive around. No other vehicle gets more smiles per km than a VW bus.
Definitely fingers crossed it goes back together nicely. For sure brakes are important I won’t be doing any miles until it’s all sorted. Thanks for watching 👍
The relief I felt seeing that the engine wasn't destroyed was nothing to how you must have felt. At least it's all simple fixes and you know why they occured which really helps.
@@SimpsonsClassics I get like that when something random pops up and I don't know what it is. Thankfully like I say its an easy enough fix for you, shame about the bank balance taking another hit though.
I think one valve had been adjusted too tight, put load on the stud, it finally gave up, loosening the rocker shaft and making the valve adjustment really loose and very noisy. Nice that it waited to give you some content before failing. I’m guessing as you said the handbrake locked on through lack of use and was ripped off when trying to free it. Give us some more symptoms of the starter issue… is it clicking… getting power. Much enjoyed… I thought I was the only one jinxed with new(to me) car issues.
Yes I think your right with the stud. New parts have arrived now so hopefully we can sort it out. The starter issue is odd it’s like the battery isn’t charging but the starter doesn’t always engage. Obviously not had chance to look at that as the engine is in bits currently. I will keep you all posted.
That stud must have been overtightened. If replacements are not readily available, it doesn't look like a difficult job to make them for anyone with a lathe and turning experience. Perhaps a tougher grade of steel to prevent recurrence of the problem although, to be honest, it shouldn't need a lot of torque.
Overtightened was my first thought as well. The EMPI covers are known leakers, and the usual solution for most people is "it must not be tight enough" leading to overtightening and broken parts. From what I can see there the engine builder did it right correcting the rocker geometry when assembling the engine (or at least made an effort at it) so I don't think that's the problem. If it were me, I'd probably be making sure you weren't near coil bind on the valve spring at full lift, and that you have some room to the piston as well, as either of those could also cause that failure.
It seems so obvious that stud not being captive to the rocker shaft ! But it’s not 😅 soon as I saw a snapped stud my brain went straight to doom 😂 images of trying to remove it clouded any mechanical sense
That bumper sticker 🤦♂️ parts may fall off .. you may remove it . Seems to be bad luck mate .. loving these jobs so far and thank god that engine wasn't toast .. is Matt helping to lower the bill of his mini 😂
Yes I did think that with the luck I have had so far. Yes really hope it goes back together nicely and we can finally enjoy the little bus. Thanks for watching 👍
Vw schofields sell top quality stuff that's not over priced. Vw heritage are too expensive by 30%, give them a wide birth. Also try custom and commercial, they make a lot in house and are cheaper on some items.
Oh what about the VW guy somewhere near Birmingham UK ? Only sells New/Used parts he has been on Wheeler Dealers & other Shows, he can surely help you 😁😁

@@graemew7001 aha thanks yeah it’s a right pain in that sense but I guess I am just getting to know her a little sooner than I wanted
Marking its spot. I got these rocker covers on Mrs wizard not a big fan but lucky easy fix but also re torque heads whilst there off. Cool bus !!
Oh that’s a great tip thanks buddy for that. I will check the torque settings while
I am in there.
Hi Marc, have you seen the videos for Kona the VW bus? It’s on McBergsma’s channel.
Yea I have seen those. 👍
I know the engine was worrying but I did laugh when that shoe fell straight out !!
Aha yeah it wasn’t ideal… hopefully some new parts can sort the job.
Gene Berg makes a valve cover spacer kit that allows High ratio rockers with stock valve cover
That the lash cap from the swivel foot

Even got a black number plate I know you like to challenge yourself but that is about as old as the ark good luck!👏
It will be fine. Get her solid then enjoy her.
As soon as I heard the engine, I knew it was a valve issue, lol. I worked for a Vw shop for a few years it crazy the amount of knowledge you retain
Yes it definitely sounded like that. Hopefully I can get it all back together soon. The issues keep coming with the bus right now so stay tuned.
Aftermarket rubbish parts = why i dont have an aircooled any more as a daily

Yes that’s what we think also. I have the new correct fitting kit now. So hopefully we can get it all built back up and running soon.

Haha and so it begins. So far Ive used just kampers and AH schofield. Ive found both to be pretty good
Thanks buddy yes just kampers have been so helpful. Stay tuned parts have arrived.
Surprised that stud snapped 😮, if you can't find the correct gaps, measure what the other side is set to and copy that?
Yes same here it was a shock. That’s then plan to copy the other side. Cheers
I did one 50 years ago and 14 thou comes to mind?

don't replace the wheel bearing unless it is ropey . thease old buses were made with play in them from new
Excellent thanks we have later found that out that this is the case. Cheers
Wow that was lucky with the stud 😮😮.
Yes definitely. Hopefully it will run with some parts
@@SimpsonsClassics I'm sure it will 👍
The rocker shaft location is interesting lol
Hopefully its all OK though mate
Thanks fingers crossed with some new parts we can sort it.
Ask your engine builder what style pushrod you have if they are chromoly. You need to adjust them with a loose zero lash
I have the engine specs, it all seems ok. Just need to reset the tappets and not over tighten that rocker shaft nut.
