Hey Dom, I've watched you alot on The Repair Shop. Unlike The Repair Shop this video actually showed how the repair was done. I'm a VW fan and I've just bought a T2 VW camper. I'm going to first rebuild the engine & gearbox. Thank you for showing the mistake with the shims, that was so informitive and I will make sure to take my time and do the rebuild correctly. Oh by the way, I'm an expat from the UK and now reside in Manitoba, Canada. Thanks again Dom, hope you have alot of fun driving your VW van.
I can't help it… you kept reminding me of 'Not The Nine O'clock News'-"Hey Bob, have you seen Bobs torque wrench?" 😁 Lovely job and I can totally understand the 'whilst… I might as well…" feeling.
Mission creep is all too familiar. I picked up an MGB GT that had sat in a garage for 34 years. After going through the necessary steps to assess the condition of the engine, the engine and gearbox had to come out to fix the clutch. Besides all of the new gaskets, seals, hoses, etc. that got replaced, maybe I’ll paint the engine while it’s out which led to cleaning and painting the engine bay, which led to removing the heater box and refurbishing that while access was good. Then it needed another gear so in goes an overdrive gearbox. The good news is it’s running and driving great and so is your bus. Now, get on that 356 and do the same for it. Can’t wait. Well done Dom and Honest John!
The alignment tool is purely to align things during assembly so you can get the input shaft of the gearbox through the clutch plate into the pilot bearing when you offer up the gearbox to be bolted back on. If the clutch plate and pilot bearing are not initially aligned , the gearbox input shaft will not be able to go in. It has nothing to do with "rattles" when the engine is running. Once the assembly is bolted up , the first time the clutch is disengaged everything automatically aligns because the clutch plate floats freely on the gearbox shaft.
My first memory of my then new step dad was him changing the engine in our new to use camper a beer crate and a plank I thought he was a magician lol thankfully he got me into classic minis lol
Only come across this by chance, as soon as you appeared I thought I know him, I think you do a really good job in your restoration work on the telly and you're into VW's, you have a new subscriber.
Great job! Check out your reverse light on the drivers side! Not on while reversing...probably an easy fix! Brake light. Thanks, I really enjoyed your video!
Looks great! But your drivers side brake light is out 😉 you don’t want any reasons to be pulled over. Keep up the great work, love your videos, as does my 2yr old daughter who is also asking to watch Dom! 👍🏻
Pulling the engine on these old buses is SO easy. I used to pull the engine out of my '71 because it was easier to change spark plugs that way. I eventually got the whole extraction down to about 45 minutes! Postscript: That guy John REALLY knows his shit when it comes to aircooled VWs. I wish I'd had him down the street from me when I had mine!
There is another Italian John, and he works mostly on Vanagons. I am sure you would like his channel. I see you have the same luck as I do when you put your best man on the job ! I have one driving split, 1967 sundial camper. 8 min to pull the engine is good. Looking forward to more split window bus adventures...
Dom, this really brings me back. My Dad restored VW Campervans as a hobby, and I spent many an hour running wrenches for him while he was under one vehicle or another. It is great to see someone loving these old girls as much as he did.
Awesome vid ,awesome bus. Does Honestjon have a workshop ,contact I've got a bit of tinware come loose "cylinder deflector plate " dont want to dismantle half my engine just to fix it Keeps falling down at engine case end...@@DominicChineas
“Trip down memory lane” for me, too. I remembered the size of every wrench you were picking up and that wiggle to draw it away from transmission. Those throw out bearings seem to last forever. Thank you.
I've dropped engines / subframes out on gravel driveways too ... the trick is to put a sheet of ply down first ! You can buy cheap ply from joinery places, as it is often used to pack around the better quality Laminate sheets they buy, the local Joiner sells the ply 'packing sheets' for a packet of choccy biscuits per sheet ;)
Please Dom be patient this van is so worth chipping away at and fixing up wish i had it so much potential personally im not into patena look but were all different cheers
Lovely van and great video. Please raise it up a couple of inches it would look so much better and could save your sump. Had a beetle in that was so low we could not get on the ramp !
Very frustrating Dom but well done in getting it back together. John is such a good friend to be happy to help so late in the day, fingers crossed that all is now fine and I like your new colours. Kind regards, Richard.
Well that sucks for you mate, but I'll tell you what it's a good thing you've found it now instead of driving it down the road you will be spending a little bit more money but you'll have a nice clean engine Your buddy there has a nice collection I love his blue Van but I like yours too I'll take either ..
I don't know how you keep calm and smile when you drop a clanger, I'd be throwing hammer across garage followed by a plethora of unrepeatable cus words lol.
Awesome bus Dom, even better withe the steel wheels back on and the patina look bumpers. you buying this inspired me to have a look around....picked up a 68 bay yesterday! thanks!!
Fleetway Clutches will rebuild clutches for you, can be more expensive than MLP or aftermarket ones but a job done proper and keeps as much as possible if originality is important to you
@@DominicChineas I knew nothing about adding shims or aligning the clutch when putting the motor back in, but it all worked, I’m the luckiest man in the world…
A hydraulic bike / quad lift can be bought cheaply on marketplace. Good working platform! I am just doing the same to my early 63 panel van. Out with my 6v 1200cc and in with a 12v 1600cc single port.
Congratulations Dom, the Bus looks awesome. Honest John saves the day. True old school VDUB mates working late and in the dark 🤙😎👍. Can't wait for the Porsche video
@@DominicChineasHI Dom, sent a message to you on Messenger. Have you heard of Parker Fabrication in Bournemouth ? Looks like he uses a Ranalah to make petrol tanks for Motor bikes
Hi Dom, The usual reason for a staked flywheel bearing is the case is worn & needs thrust cutting & probably a linebore. I've seen this loads of times over many years of building & rebuilding these engines. Dont trust the endfloat readings, some of this will be the bearing in the case. bearing seizure is quite common with todays aftermarket bearing kits, being made of inferior materials to the originals. Graham, GAC.
Dom, This took me back, I was apprenticed to a VW garage 55 years ago. When you put the new flywheel on I was saying to the video, check the end-float. I'm glad you found out in time. Looking forward to the next episode. PS. watch out for speed humps, its very low.
Just got your book today, I'v got a few tool books but this is a good one. I like the art work, the text all I can say is what a great book, well done you nailed it. Many thanks
Looks great with the original wheels, sounds amazing. The Ranalagh brand is going to look sick on the side of that van. Your book arrived today can't wait to sit by the fire and have a read.
How cool is Jon, if I wore two separate gloves one orange one blue, I'd look a right plinker and laughed out the garage by my mates😂. Always nice to have a friend that knows everything, a very useful chap and a nice guy I think. Have a good week Dom.
Dominic, looking good, you just need to correct the body height. Torsion bars need resetting. Flywheel nut 253 ft/lb with a socket not a chisel and lump hammer.
so great content like always! love your channel so much! the bus is a life dream for me... but unaffordable for me so I dream through your video! thanks

28:00 minutes in, it looks that perhaps a brake light is out... but your new 'old' paint job looks great. Looking forward to the Porsche
Looking great mate, bumpers and wheels have transformed it.
Looks like you have a blown brake light.

Lovely to see your “it’s not a project” project up and running 😂.

12v starter vs 6v flywheel different pitch in gear.. inverst in a 200mm flywheel and clutch. You would probably need to clearance the bellhousing
New spigot bearing too Dom, the old one will hydraulic out with an old input shaft driven into grease.
Honest John is a really good mate.
He really is!
Amazing video! Subscribed! It really seemed that I was with you on your garage. Great video experience, and super panel! Greetings from France!

In my limited experience older VWs have an issue with the engine rear bearing, my 70s hatchback did. I sold it for parts.
Should have checked crankshaft end play, with the re& re. Shims on on behind gland nut. Cheers for across the pond. Canada , eh. .
I agree, those black bumpers and wheels had to go, tis now a lovely looking splitty 😎👌
It’s getting there! Once the roof is done, I can’t wait for the signwriting!
I like your approach, might not suit a mainstream engine development but much more entertaining.
great video Dom. BTW left rear tail light is out.
Good find. I really suggest getting better lights in the garage. Can barely see what you're doing. Hope you checked the end play?
